Midterm Exam 1

Problem 1

a). Use Appendix A Table III to find 𝑃(0.12 ≤ 𝑍 ≤ 1.41). Show your work as
appropriate. Do not use Minitab.

Using Appendix A Table III

Find the probability corresponding to Z=1.41, the value is 0.920730
Find the probability corresponding to Z=0.12, the value is 0.547758
P(0.12 ≤ Z ≤ 1.41) = P(Z ≤ 1.41) − P(Z ≤ 0.12)
P(0.12 ≤ Z ≤ 1.41) = 0.920730 − 0.5477588 = 0.37297

Hence, 𝑃(0.12 ≤ 𝑍 ≤ 1.41) = 0.37297

b). Use Minitab to solve this problem. Submit screenshot. Write the answer.

𝑃(0.12 ≤ 𝑍 ≤ 1.41) = 0.37297

PROBLEM 2
An engineer tested the gain of an amplifier and collected the following data
points: 61, 67, 74, 82.

What distribution might be appropriate to model the data? Why?

Use Minitab. Show the appropriate plot(s) to support your answer. Submit
screenshot(s).

Normal Distribution Plot

Exponential Distribution Plot

What distribution might be appropriate to model the data? Why?

Normal Distribution Plot is appropriate to model the data

By examining the above observation of normal and exponential
distributions plots, it is clear that the data should be modeled using a
normal distribution because the points align more closely with the
normal plot.
PROBLEM 3
A sprinkle operates correctly 70% of the time. Suppose a large room has
10 independent sprinkles, what is the probability that all of them will
operate correctly in a fire?

Given:

● Probability of one sprinkler working correctly P=0.70

● Number of sprinklers n=10

The probability that all 10 sprinklers will work correctly is:

P(all work) = P^n = (0.70)^{10}

Now, let's calculate:

P(all work)=(0.70)^10≈0.0282

Thus, the probability that all 10 sprinklers will operate correctly is

approximately 0.0282 or 2.82%

0.0282
PROBLEM 4

If the putrefaction of a sample is high, what is the probability that the

autolysis is high?

P(Autolysis is High | Putrefaction is High)=P(Autolysis is High and

Putrefaction is High)/P(Putrefaction is High)

From the table:

● The number of beetles with high autolysis and high putrefaction

is 14.
● The total number of beetles with high putrefaction is 14 + 59 = 73

Now we can calculate the conditional probability:

P(Autolysis is High | Putrefaction is High)=14/73≈0.1918

So, the probability that autolysis is high given that putrefaction is

high is approximately 0.1918 or 19.18%.
