SHOPPING
DIFFERENT KINDS OF SHOPS, GOODS
o Buying and selling goods has been a regular human activity for as long as people
have lived together
o When we need some things, we go to the nearest shop

o The most frequented shops are food stores


o We go to buy there what is most important for us and for our household – food and
drinks
o There are two types of food shops – grocer’s and supermarkets
o In a small shop the shopkeeper assists us
o In a supermarket we take a trolley or basket and we pick our food ourselves

o There are several departments in the supermarket – department with baked goods
like bread, rolls or cakes, fruit and vegetable counter, where we can choose
products grown in our climate as well as tropical fruit, department with soft drinks
such as lemonade, juices and mineral waters, adults can also choose beer, wine,
champagne and so one

o If you go to shop at the supermarket, it would be good to write a shopping list


o In front of the supermarket you take a trolley
o Then you enter and walk along the aisle and put the goods into your trolley
o If you can’t find a good you can ask the staff
o Then you go to a check-out counter and you usually have to wait in a queue
o After that you pay for the goods
o It is possible to pay in cash or by credit card
o I think paying by credit card is better because you don’t have to take a lot of
money with you

o The shopping changed in the end of the 20th century


o It appeared big shopping malls and it became common to do shopping under one
roof instead of walking around the corner shops through the streets
o The shopping malls include different sections and shops with various goods – you
can buy there everything from food, to clothes or furniture

o Some people, especially girls and women, love shopping


o They can’t live without it. They don’t really need to buy something, although they
say so
o They just want to have something new
o It is also a form of relaxation for them
o We call it shopping spree
o Nowadays shopping trips are common
o People usually go there on Sunday, they visit large shopping malls and they enjoy
shopping instead of family trip
o They are able to spend there the whole day

o People also do the window shopping
o It has a lot of advantages – you don’t need money, you can see a lot of interesting
things without entering the shop and you also get the view of new trends
o It is a good entertainment when you don’t have money or when you have nothing
to do
o You just go around some shops and you stop and stare to windows and dream
about what you would like to buy

o Online shopping is getting more and more popular


o Shopping at the Internet has many advantages. You don’t have to leave your
house or couch and you get what you want
o You can compare prices on different websites – so you don’t have to run from shop
to another shop
o It is also usually cheaper than in real shops

o You can also sell thing you need no more, such as clothes, laptops, books or bikes
o There are web sites like aukro. You usually sell everything and you don’t have to
spend money for advertising in newspapers.

o But some people still haven’t tried this kind of shopping because they are afraid of
it
o The truth is it has its disadvantages too
o The biggest disadvantage is that sometimes you have to pay in advance by your
credit card
o It is also complicated when things stop working and you want to ask for refund

TYPES OF SHOPS:
o At the greengrocer’s there is usually a wide selection of fruit and vegetables for
example apples, oranges, garlic, cucumbers and things like these
o There a shop assistant weights the customer’s fruit and vegetables

o If we want to buy salami or meat for lunch, we must go to a butcher's shop


o We can buy various sorts of meat: beef, pork, lamb, mutton, chicken, turkey, fish
and some meat products such as ham or sausages.

o If we are not satisfied with the local supermarket's selection of baked goods, we go
to a bakery
o Such a store can be found very easily because there is the scent of lovely fresh
warm bread in the air outside

o Sometimes we need to go to chemists to buy some soap, toothpaste, skin cream.

o Often, we must visit a pharmacy


o There we can buy ointments, pills or drops

o Sometimes we need a medical prescription for some medicine

o Corner shop - a small shop, where is a shop assistant who hands you your goods.
o self-service shop - you take a basket or a trolley and go shopping. If you have
all the goods, you go to the cash desk and pay for your purchase. The goods are
put into the shopping bag.
o supermarket, hypermarket - large self-service shops
o department store - more floors, more goods, more departments
o A department store is a store which sells many different kinds of goods, each in a
separate department
o Modern department stores serve the needs of entire families
o People enjoy shopping in such stores because they can make all their purchases
under one roof
o The typical department store occupies one large building, with separate
departments located on a number of floors
o A number provide special services, such as a travel agency or opticians.

SHOPPING CENTRES:
o In the suburbs of the cities there are shopping centres now - it is a complex of
many hypermarkets (in Prague or Brno there are hypermarkets TESCO, IKEA,
Computer Land, Olympia, HOBI) and some other smaller shops like Mc Donald´s,
Jewellery, cafés, clothes ‘shops etc.

o When I go shopping, I never forget to visit the local bookshop because I’m student
and I usually need some books for my study. I find out if any new books have been
published. I very often buy things for the school at a stationery shop such as
pencils, pens, writing paper and calendars.
