Introduction:

Some people want to stop using plastic bags to help the planet. But, this could cause
problems. Plastic bags are cheap, useful, and people use them at home for many
things. Stopping plastic bags could also be hard for small stores and people with less
money. Instead, we can try to recycle more, teach people to use bags carefully, and
make new bags that are better for the planet. This way, we help the Earth and still help
people.

Arguments:

1. Easy and Cheap: Plastic bags are easy to use and cheap for people. If we ban
them, low-income families may have to buy bags that cost more.

2. Use Again: Many people use plastic bags again at home, like for garbage or
carrying food. This makes them useful since they can do more than one job
before we throw them away.

3. Job Loss: A ban would hurt workers and companies in the plastic industry.
Small stores that need cheap bags might also struggle.

4. Other Bags Aren’t Perfect: Paper and cloth bags also hurt the environment.
Paper bags need a lot of water to make, and cloth bags use more energy and
resources, especially if they’re made from cotton. To be better, cloth bags need
to be used many times.

5. Better Waste Control: Instead of a ban, we could improve recycling and teach
people how to use bags better. If people learn how to recycle plastic bags
correctly, it would help the environment without needing a ban.

6. Better Plastics: A good idea is to support new types of plastics that break down
faster or can be reused, so they’re less harmful to the planet.

Questions for the team:

1. Economic Impact:
• How will the ban affect small businesses that need cheap plastic bags for their
customers?

• Is it fair for low-income consumers to pay more for alternatives like

paper or cloth bags?

2. Use and Reuse:

• Have you thought about how many people reuse plastic bags for other
things, like garbage bags or carrying items? Do you think alternatives can do the
same job?

3. Environmental Impact of Alternatives:

• Did you know that making paper bags uses more water and energy than plastic
bags? How do you see this as a more “green” choice?

• Cloth bags need to be used many times to balance out their initial impact. How do
you suggest making sure consumers actually use them that much?

4. Alternative Solutions to the Ban:

• Why ban plastic instead of improving recycling and waste systems?
Wouldn’t it be better to tackle the problem through waste management?

• Do you think encouraging the use of biodegradable or recyclable

plastics could be a good solution instead of a total ban?
