48353 CONCRETE DESIGN Spring 2022

Quiz-2: Reinforced Concrete Columns

This task is to design the short tied and braced reinforced concrete column (Type A) shown in
Figure 1 at Ultimate Limit State according to AS3600:2018. The cross-section is square shaped
(D = b). Reinforcement is composed of normal class steel bars (Es = 200000 MPa; fsy = 500
MPa). The characteristic compressive strength of concrete is 40 MPa. The exposure condition
of the column is A2. The dead and live imposed loads are
MG = 50 kNm NG = 300 kN
MQ = 20 kNm NQ = 150 kN
The self-weight of the column will be neglected (assumed equal to zero).

Figure 1: Type A column cross-section

Answer:
M* = 1.2 * 50 + 1.5 * 20 = 90 kN.m
N* = 1.2 * 300 + 1.5 * 150 = 585 kN

Question 1: Determine the column cross-section depth D, assuming Nu/Ag = 10 MPa (1 mark).
Assume Nu = Nu* = 585 kN
With Ag = D2 for square shaped cross-section.
D2 = 585×103 /10 = 58500 mm2
D = 241.87 mm
Choose D = 250 mm

Question 2: Using the design chart for g = 0.8, determine the percentage of longitudinal steel
reinforcement required for this column, the area of longitudinal steel reinforcement, and select
the appropriate rebars (3 marks).
Assume Mu = Mu* = 90 kN.m
Mu/DAg = 90×106 /2503 = 5.76
Use chart below: 3.3% steel reinforcement (0.033 on chart) is suitable

5.76
Total steel area required: As = 0.033×2502 = 2062.5 mm2
Select: 4N28 = 2480 mm2 or 8N20 = 2480 mm2

Question 3: Check the value of g and revise the design accordingly (3 marks).
Check the gauge g (assuming 10 mm for ties diameter)
Distance centre-to-centre from top and bottom layers of longitudinal bars (for 4N28) =
250 – (2×20 + 2×10 + 2×14) = 162 mm
g = 162/250 = 0.648
Distance centre-to-centre from top and bottom layers of longitudinal bars (for 4N20) =
250 – (2×20 + 2×10 + 2×10) = 170 mm
g = 162/250 = 0.68
Assumption g = 0.8 is wrong for this case

Use chart with g = 0.7 instead of g = 0.8

3% steel reinforcement (0.03 on chart) is suitable
5.76

Total steel area required: As = 0.039 *2502 = 2437.5 mm2

Select: 6N24 = 2700 mm2

Check the gauge g (assuming 10 mm for ties diameter)

Distance centre-to-centre from top and bottom layers of longitudinal bars (for N24) =
250 – (2×20 + 2×10 + 2×12) = 166 mm
g = 166/250 = 0.66 OK
Question 4: Select appropriate ties bar diameter and spacing, carry out the final design check
and draw the column cross-section (1 mark).

Minimum bending moment = 0.05DNu* = 0.05x0.25x585 = 7.31 kN.m < 90 kN.m OK

Percentage of steel p: 1% < p < 4% OK

For 6N24

6N24

N10 tie

The vertical ties spacing:

D = 250 mm
15db = 15*24 =360 mm
Response is vertical ties spacing = 250 mm.
