Take Home Assignment 1: 5th November 2024

Submission Deadline: Friday, 08th November 2024

Submit your work through Program leaders/Class presidents who will bring scripts to
the Department of Community Health, Room 8.

Question 1
Malnutrition is common in children under five years. Data on the annual number of
malnourished children (males and females) identified was collected from regional referral
hospitals over a five-year period. The data was collected for the following periods.
1. Jul 2019 to Jun 2020
2. Jul 2020 to Jun 2021
3. Jul 2021 to Jun 2022
4. Jul 2022 to Jun 2023
5. Jul 2023 to Jun 2024
Statistical analysis was performed separately for females and males to determine whether
the number of malnourished children identified changed over the years.

(ii) Analysis of the number of malnourished males

timeperiod 23.53057 14.47203 1.63 0.109 -5.363773 52.42492

_cons 25.55505 51.01565 0.50 0.618 -76.30098 127.4111

R-Squared=0.0.04

Use the information given to answer questions a to f.

a) Write a general linear regression equation for malnourished female children. (1 marks)
b) Determine the change in the number of malnourished female children for one unit change
in years. (1 mark)
c) Interpret the p-value of 0.019 (1 mark)

d) Considering the analysis results of male data, the p-value for the time period is 0.109.
What does this mean? (1 mark)

e) For male children, the 95% confidence interval for the coefficient of time period is -5.36
to 52.42. Interpret this confidence interval. (2 marks)

f) Analysis of the number of malnourished males by time period revealed an R-squared of

0.04. Determine the value of R and provide an interpretation of this value. (2 marks)

g) Considering all the data analysis output, was the data analyst justified in analyzing male
and female data separately? (5 marks)

Question 2

c) Identify the appropriate means of dispersion for weight data. Determine the value of this
measure of dispersion from the data. (3 marks)

d) Determine the proportion of the sample with positive culture. (1 mark)

the average number of expected positive cultures from a sample of 1000 specimens from
the same population. (2 marks)
