Wild Modals Can’t Be Caught

The Scene: A dark, smokey bar, down the street from Westchester Community College, Valhalla, NY.

Narrator: A woman enters the bar, all heads turn to her, a quiet hush washes over the crowd. The
bartender pauses a moment, the alcohol overflowing the glass he is pouring into. All eyes drink in her
beauty for a moment. Her red dress matches her bright lips and she has a large silver briefcase. She
quickly crosses the room, and drops her lit cigarette into another woman’s cocktail as she passes. Hisssss.
The bartender blinks, and begins to wipe up the spill, as the woman in red slides onto a stool at the end
of the bar. She shrugs off her white fur coat, and begins to reapply a fresh coat of red lipstick.

Woman: (to no one in particular) Who must I kill to get a drink around here?

Man 1: Can I buy you a drink, Miss?

Woman in Red: I don’t know, can you?

Man 2: May I buy you a drink?

Woman in Red: (pauses) I suppose you may.

Man 3: Can I light your cigarette?

Bartender: Hey! No smoking in here!
Woman in Red: (to the bartender) Might you make an exception, for sweet little me?
Bartender: Oh alright… I guess I can…

Man 3: (lighting cigarette) Shall anyone be joining you tonight?

Woman in Red: I suppose we will find out… if they can catch me… Bartender!

Bartender: What can I get you to drink, Miss?

Woman in Red: I shall have pink champagne, please.

Bartender: Uh… We don’t have champagne here… We ought to…. But we don’t… This bar isn’t that fancy…
Woman in Red: (sighs) I suppose I can settle for a whiskey. But make it a double, please. And hurry!

Man 4: (whispering to Lady 1) I must say… That woman is quite possibly the most beautiful creature I have
ever seen.
Lady 1: (Loudly, to the whole room) Would you like to ask to take her photo… It will last longer, you know…
Man 4: (excitedly) Can you?
Lady 1: (slaps Man 4’s shoulder)
Man 4: Ouch!

Woman in Red: (slurping down drink) That was a mighty fine drink, bartender. (Turning to Man 2) And
thank you kindly sir, for buying my drink. Bartender, is there a window in the ladies bathroom, large
enough that I may have some fresh air while I powder my nose?

Bartender: Uh, yes....

Narrator: Our mysterious woman in red quickly stood and in a most surprising act, leans over the bar and
grabs the bartender by his collar, pulls him over the bar and kisses him, leaving a bright red kiss right on
his lips. Then she picked up her large, silver briefcase and heads to the ladies bathroom with a trail of
cigarette smoke behind her.

Bartender: Wow! Thanks doll!

Man 1: What a woman!

Man 2: I didn’t even catch her name...

Man 1: I couldn’t even buy her a drink…

Man 3: I must see her again…

Lady 1: You could, but you would regret it…

Man 4: I shall keep this cigarette butt forever!

Narrator: Not a minute later, two men in dark trench coats and gold badges at their hips burst through
the front door of the bar.

Wilson: Where is she? She must be in here! We can’t lose her!

Crawford: Bartender! Detective Crawford and Detective Wilson here, and we’re looking for someone who
may be in here!

Bartender: May I ask who you’re looking for, Detectives?

Wilson: We’re looking for a woman… You may have seen recently? She’s wearing a red dress and a white
fur coat. And she’s carrying a large, silver briefcase! You wouldn’t miss her if she came in!

Man 4: Oh, we’ve seen her alright…

Wilson: Which way did she go?!

Narrator: The whole crowd points to the ladies bathroom. Suddenly, a gust of wind blows open the
bathroom door, revealing an empty bathroom and the window wide open, curtains blowing.

Wilson: She’s escaped again! Let’s go around back and see if we can still catch sight of her!

Man 2: Detectives! Before you go! What did she do?

Crawford: The woman in red? She may be connected to a bank robbery!
