Lesson Title: Elements, compounds and mixtures 16 November 2023

LO: Today I am learning about elements, compounds and mixtures.

Key Words
Starter Activity • Pure substances
• Impure substance
Riddle!!
• Compound bond
Which fish costs the • Mixture
most? • Molecules
By the end of this lesson, I will be able to…

Describe the difference between compound

SC1
and mixtures

SC2
Explain the differences between pure and
impure substances
Element
• What is an element?

- An element is a substance made up of only one type of

atom.
- Cannot be broken down into a simpler substance

For example, copper is an element

made up of copper atoms only.
• Robert Boyle “father of
chemistry” is credited
with the definition of an
element.

• He was an Irish scientist

from Lismore Co.

Compound
• What is a compound?

- A compound consists of 2 or more different elements chemically combined.

- The properties of a compound are different from the properties of the elements it

contains

- Can you think of an example of a compound?

Properties of a compound

• Hydrogen = An explosive gas.

• Oxygen = A gas needed to support combustion.

• Dihydrogen monoxide (water) = A very important liquid needed to

support life. Why are O2 (oxygen gas) and

N2 (nitrogen gas) not
considered compounds?
Chemical Reactions

• A change that results in the formation of one or more new

substances is called a chemical reaction.

• For example: Iron + Sulfur Iron Sulfide

Fe + S FeS
Mixture

• What is a mixture?

- A mixture consists of 2 or more substances mingled together but not

chemically combined.

- Each substance in a mixture keeps its own properties

- Can you think of an example of a mixture?

Can you describe the mixtures?

Mixture of two Mixture of two Mixture of three Mixture of two

N2 = Nitrogen CO2 = Carbon NO2 = Nitrogen CH4 = Methane

O2 = Oxygen dioxide dioxide C2H4 = Ethene
CO = Carbon CO = Carbon

Have we met SC1?

Describe the difference between compound

SC1
and mixtures

What’s the difference between a compound

and a mixture?
Important definition!
• Pure substances are made up of a single element or compound
• For example:
Oxygen = O2 Sulphur = S8

• Impure substances are made up of different atoms or molecules.

For example: Air = It is made up of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide
Purity of a substance
• To test the purity of a substance, different physical
properties can be measured:

1. Melting point

2. Boiling point

3. Density
Have we met SC2?

SC2
Explain the differences between pure and
impure substances

Explain how you can test to find out if a

substance is pure or not?
