Multiplying Polynomials Handout

1. Multiplying a Monomial by a Monomial

Multiply the coefficients and add the exponents for variables with the same
base.

Example: 3a2·2a5 = (3·2)a2+5 = 6a7

Simplify the following:

1. (8x3)(2x5) 5. (3a3)(-5a4)(2a2)
2. (3xy3)(6xz) 6. (4x2y3)(7x3y5)
3. (-4x2)(7y5z3) 7. (-6x3y4)(-2x5z2)
4. (6x2)(-3y3)(2z5) 8. (7a2b2c4)(-3a4c2d4)

2. Multiplying a Monomial by a Polynomial

Use the distributive property to remove the parentheses and simplify.

Example:

3a3(2a4-4a5) = 3a3·2a4 – 3a3·4a5 = (3·2)a3+4 – (3·4)a3+5 = 6a7 – 12a8

Simplify the following:

1. 2(x-7) 5. 3n2(n2-6n)

2. -6(3h+5) 6. 2x3(3k2+5k-4)

3. 2x(x+20) 7. 4y3(2xy2-x2y2+y)

4. 7x(6x+4y) 8. 9x2y(x2+xy+y2)

3. Multiply a Binomial by a Binomial using FOIL and the box methods.

FOIL Method Box Method

FOIL Method: Series of four steps using Box Method: Draw a box with four
the distributive property. squares. Place the binomials on the
outside of the boxes.

INNER

(2x + 7)(3x - 5) 2x

OUTER
Multiply terms:
(F) FIRST: 2x·3x = 6x2 3x -5
(O) Outer: 2x·(-5) = -10x
2x 2x·3x 2x(-5)
(I) Inner: 7·3x = 21x
(L) Last: 7·(-5) = -35
+7 7(3x) 7(-5)
Combine Like Terms:

6x2-10x+21x-35 = 6x2+11x-35 3x -5

2x 6x2 -10x

+7 21x -35

Write the product as an expression and

combine Like Terms:

6x2-10x+21x-35 = 6x2+11x-35

Use the FOIL and Box Method to find each product:

1. (a+3)(a-2) 5. (x-5y)(a+2y)
2. (t-3)(2t+3) 6. (2y-5)(3y+7)
3. (2x+3)(2x-3) 7. (2b-1)(2b-1)
4. (3s-2t)(2s-3t) 8. 2(x+y)(x-y)

4. Multiply a Binomial by a Polynomial.

Distributive Method Box Method

Distribute the binomial to each term in Box Method: Draw a box with six
the polynomial. squares. Place the binomials on the
outside of the boxes.

(2x - 7)(3x2+ x - 5) 3x2 +x -5

2x

-7

Then use the method to multiply a

monomial by a binomial: Multiply terms:
3x2 +x -5
(2x-7)(3x2) = 6x3 – 21x2
(2x-7)(x) = 2x2-7x 2x 2x·3x2 2x(x) 2x(-5)
(2x-7)(-5) = -10x+35
-7 -7(3x2) -7(x) -7(-5)
Combine Like Terms:

6x3-21x2+2x2-7x-10x+35 =
3x2 +x -5
6x3-19x2-17x+35
2x 6x3 2x2 -10x

-7 -21x2 -7x +35

Write the product as an expression and

combine Like Terms:

6x3-21x2+2x2-7x-10x+35 =
6x3-19x2-17x+35

Use both methods to find each product.

1. (3x - 2)(2x2 – x + 2) 5. (-x + 1) (4x2 - x + 8)

2. (-11x + 3) (-10x2 - 7x - 9) 6. (-4x - 3) (-x2 - 2x - 1)
3. (x - 3) (x2 + 3x + 9) 7. (2x+1) (4x2 - 2x + 1)
4. (7x + 3) (7x2 + 3x + 10) 8. (-6x4 + 5x2 + 3x) (x + 4)
