Assignment 2 Topographic Map

Worth 2 points of your final grade, this assignment opens Monday, May 27; due Friday, May 31;
by 11:59pm; 2 days grace period applies due Sunday, June 2 by 11:59pm. Late submissions
(after June 2) will occur 20% penalty per day.
Submit your answers (in word format) to the course page Dropbox Assignment 2 under the tab
“Assessments”.

Goals:

1. Understand how a topographic map represents the Earth’s surface and be able to interpret
such a map;
2. Solve problems using your map-reading skills.

Materials needed:

1. North Vancouver topographic map (available on the course page as a PDF file)

Exercises:

Part 1 – Reading and interpreting a topographic map

Examine the North Vancouver map to answer the following questions (6 marks):

1. What does NTS stand for?


NTS stands for National Topographic System
2. What is the NTS number/letter name for this map?
The NTS number of this map is 92 G/6.
3. What is the scale of the map?
The scale of the map is 1/50000. This means that every centimeter on the map represents
50000cm or 500 m.
4. In what year was this map published?
This map was published in 2002.
5. Use the Index to Adjoining Maps to determine which map sheet borders this one:

Part B: Analyzing map data and making calculations from the map

Watch the posted video “How to read topographic maps” (https://youtu.be/qpcXvqTstZ4). Use
the technique illustrated in the video, estimate the elevations found at the following points in the
following map. The topographic map is from a coastal area. All contour lines are spaced at a 20
m contour interval. (Hint: sea level is considered zero-level elevation) (4 marks)
