Debate Competition Rules and Guidelines

For the Organizers

1. Judges:
- A panel of 3 judges will be appointed, preferably with experience in debating or public speaking.
- Judges will evaluate participants based on predetermined criteria and provide scores on the score
sheets.

2. Timekeepers:
- A designated timekeeper will be assigned to keep track of the time for each participant.
- A warning bell will be rung 30 seconds before the time limit.

3. Moderators:
- A moderator will be responsible for introducing the topic, managing the flow of the competition,
and ensuring participants adhere to the rules.

4. Venue Setup:
- Ensure the venue has good acoustics and seating arrangements.
- Microphones and podiums should be set up for the speakers.
- Judges should be seated where they can clearly see and hear all participants.

5. Scoring:
- Scores will be based on content, clarity, body language, rebuttal, and time management, as per the
score sheet.
- The decision of the judges will be final.

6. Participation Format:
- The debate will be conducted in two rounds if the number of participants exceeds 10.
- Top scorers from the preliminary round will move on to the final round.

7. Rebuttal:
- After the main speech, each participant will be given an opportunity to rebut opposing arguments.

For the Participants

1. Format:
- The debate will follow the “For and Against” format, where participants will either support or
oppose the given motion.
- The motion/topic will be shared 1 week before the competition.

2. Teams:
- Participants will be divided into two groups: Proposition (For the motion) and Opposition (Against
the motion).
- The sides will be decided by a draw of lots.

3. Time Limit:
- Main Speech: 4 minutes
- The participant presents their arguments in favor or against the motion.
- A warning bell will ring after 3.5 minutes, and the final bell will ring at 4 minutes.

- Rebuttal: 2 minutes
- The participant addresses the arguments presented by the opposing side.
- A warning bell will ring after 1.5 minutes, and the final bell will ring at 2 minutes.

4. Time Management:
- Exceeding the time limit will result in a penalty of 2 marks per 10 seconds.

5. Rebuttal:
- Participants should listen carefully to the opponent’s speech and provide counter-arguments
during the rebuttal round.
- No new arguments should be introduced during rebuttal, only responses to the opposing side’s
points.

6. Conduct:
- Respect the opposing team. Personal attacks or disrespectful remarks will lead to disqualification.
- Participants should remain quiet when other speakers are presenting and during the rebuttal
round.

7. Dress Code:
- Participants are expected to wear the school uniform or formal attire.
