The number system

 Place value: the value of a digit determined by its


position.
 These are the digits that make up numbers in our number
system 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
 When these digits create a number, each digit sits in
different place. Each place has a different value.

1000 100 10 1 0.1 0.01 0.001

For example:

830.467

We would read this number as eight hundred thirty point four


six seven.

830: “eight hundred thirty”

.467: “point four six seven”

Where each digit after the decimal point is read individually.

Or eight hundred thirty and four hundred sixty- seven
thousandths

The place value of each digit


The 8 has a value of 8 hundreds (800)

The 3 has a value of 3 tens (30)

The 0 has a value of o ones

Decimal point

The 4 has a value of 0.4 tenths

The 6 has a value of 0.06 hundredths

The 7 has a value of 0.007 thousandths

 EXPANDED FORM

The expanded form: a way to write a number that shows the VALUE
for each place.

Example:

The expanded form of 54. 876 is:

50 + 4 + 0.8 + 0.07 + 0.006
