I. Introduction
1. Measuring wheel:
Every engineer and hobbyist nowadays has a workbench for all of their tools and gadgets, and if
you're a 3D printing enthusiast, you've probably used the vernier caliper a lot. This emphasizes
the significance of precise measurement tools in engineering. After having used many of them
throughout our lives, it is now time for us to attempt to build one. In this project, we will be
making a distance measuring wheel using a rotary encoder that can help us measure the length it
traverses with millimeter-level accuracy.

2. Working principle of Measuring wheel

This project used the basic principles of a rotary encoder. You can refer to the article for a more
comprehensive understanding of the rotary encoder. The work of our rotary encoder is that it converts
the rotation of the shaft into a series of pulses. The encoder gives out two pulses which are at a phase
difference of 90 degrees, by evaluating these two phases we can easily determine the direction of
rotation of the module.

Along with these, we need to have a simple push switch that acts as the reset button, using a signal
from the reset button we can decrease the counter. To control all our modules, we will be using an
Arduino Pro-Mini. This will act as our main controller to process the pulses from the rotary encoder
and display the measured value on the OLED Display via the SPI Protocol.

3. Benefits of a measuring wheel:

The first advantage is that portable. If we use a long ruler to measure a distance, it’s very hard to put it in
our pocket. Meanwhile this tool can do it, and it’s also lighter than a tape measure.Secondly,it is use-
friendly. We may utilize this machine by placing it at one end, pressing the button, and rolling it to the
final point to be measured.Last but not least, it is accuracy. Instead of straining our eyes to see the data
on the ruler, the device will display the precise length. For instance, we have an object with 10.25 mm.
However, a normal ruler only shows 10mm or 11mm, so it is very hard for us to estimate the exact
number. Meanwhile, this machine can provide correct numbers in milliseconds.

2. Experimental procedures (Accuracy test):
Step 1: Prepare two rulers, 20 and 30 cm long.

Step 2: Activate the device until the LCD display illuminates.

Step 3: Place the device at one end of 20 cm rulers.

Step 4: Push it along this iron bar to the other end.

Step 5: Collect the data from the measuring wheel's LCD screen and compare with the given data of
20cm this ruler.

Step 6: Press the button to measure the 30 cm long ruler again.

Step 7: Rehearse measuring with this ruler by following steps 3 and 4.

Step 8: Collect the data from the measuring wheel's LCD screen and compare with the given data of 30
cm this ruler.

III. Results and discussion

1. Measuring the distance:
The perimeter of the rectangular plot was measured by walking along the boundary with the Digital
Distance Measuring Wheel.

Measurements were taken for each side of the rectangle, ensuring the wheel was rolled consistently along
the edge.
2. Recording The Distance:

• Ruler 1: 20 cm

• Ruler 2: 30 cm

IV. Conclusion

The DIY Digital Distance Measuring Wheel proved to be an effective tool for measuring the perimeter
and calculating the area of a rectangular plot. The measured perimeter was consistent with the expected
dimensions of the plot, and the calculated area of 600 square meters was accurate based on the recorded
measurements.

This project demonstrates the practicality of using a Digital Distance Measuring Wheel for land
measurement purposes, especially for straightforward shapes such as rectangles. Further testing on
irregular shapes can help determine the device's versatility in different scenarios.
