How are CLIL , CBI and TBL related to ESP ?

Language for Specific Purposes is defined by Kirkwood Halliday, MacIntosh and Strevens 1964 as a
teaching approach tailored to the individual needs of the learner, mainly in the professional domain. In reason of
that, this source claims that ESP consistently incorporates the approaches to language acquisition and subject
learning. CLIL refers as describes situations in which whole or portions of subjects are taught in a foreign
language with the dual-goals of concurrently learning a foreign language and content knowledge ( Balagiu Alina
& Patesan Mariora, 2015 ) . The purpose of ESP and CLIL is to improve language proficiency in some
circumstances. In CLIL programs teach language to students through content, making it a natural fit for ESP. For
example, in a CLIL science class, students acquire scientific concepts in English, which can be considered ESP
for science. The incorporation of ESP principles into CLIL programs guarantees that students gain not only
language proficiency but also specific vocabulary and communication techniques related to their academic
disciplines ( Lasagabaster, D., Doiz, A., & Sierra, J. M. 2014 ), CLIL and ESP both emphasize in a subject
learning and language education.

The method of teaching language is known as ESP, and all of its techniques and materials are predicated on
the reasons why learner are learning (Hutchinson .T and Waters .A ,1987) , and a method known as content-
based instruction Content-Based Instruction (CBI) is “an approach to second language teaching in which teaching
is organized around the content or information that students will acquire, rather than around a linguistic or other
type of syllabus” (Richards & Rodgers, 2001, p.204) . According to Johns Ann.M, 1992 “Both movements
stem from practitioners’ unease about the separation of language instruction from the contexts and demands of
real language use”. It stated that ESP has a relationship with the CBI approach. It is drawn from the principle of
CBI itself, which better reflects the needs of learners who are learning a second language, in addition, the
practitioners in the both movements recognize that language classroom activities should be designed to assist
students in interaction with content and discourse in cognitively demanding ways, or at the very least, in ways
that are similar in use to those in target language situation (Richard, Jack C. & Theodore S. Rodger .2001,p
207).

TBL argue that the most effective way to teach a language is by engaging learner in real language use in the
classroom. This is done by designing tasks -discussions, problems, games and so on which require learners to use
the language for themselves (D.J & D Willis, 2007 ) , and According to Dudley- Evans ,1998 one of ESP
absolute characteristics “ESP makes use of underlying methodology and activities of the discipline it serves.”
Furthermore, ESP emphasizes authentic communication within specific professional contexts and TBL tasks
promote authentic communication by requiring learners to use language meaningfully, encouraging negotiation of
meaning and effective communication (3).
