EXAMINER : Mr Ntozakhe
MODERATOR : Mr Mdayi

MARKS: 50

TIME: 1 HOUR
QUESTION 1: MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS

Four options are provided as possible answers to the following questions.

Each question has only ONE correct answer. Choose the answer and write
down only the letter A, B, C or D next to the question number (1.1‒1.5) in
your ANSWER BOOK.

1.1 The frictional force acting on a sliding object ...

A) Is inversely proportional to the normal force.
B) Depends on the magnitude of the area of contact.
C) Depends on the velocity of motion.
D) Depends on the type of surface. (1)

1.2 A non-conservative force is a force …

A) Which is not in contact with an object when it moves between two
points and depends on the path taken.
B) Which is in contact with an object when it moves between two
points but does not depend on the path taken.
C) For which the work done in moving an object between two points
depends on the path taken.
D) For which the work done in moving an object between two points
does not dependent of the path taken. (1)

1.3 The kinetic energy of a car, moving at a constant velocity v, is equal to

K. The velocity of the car then changes to 2v. What is the new kinetic
energy of the car?
A)
B)
C)
D) 4K (1)

1.4 Which one of the following is used to measure the rate of blood flow
in a person?
A) Doppler effect
B) Photoelectric effect
C) Atomic emission spectrum
D) Atomic absorption spectrum (1)

1.5 Which ONE of the statements below about the Doppler effect is
CORRECT?
A) The Doppler Effect is only applicable to sound waves.
B) The Doppler Effect can be used to explain the expanding universe.
C) Electrons are ejected from a metal surface by means of the Doppler
Effect.
D) A stationary listener hears a lower pitch of the sound from a siren of
an approaching vehicle because of the Doppler Effect. (1)

QUESTION 2

2.1 A block with a mass of 10 kg is sliding along a uniform, rough

surface. The surface is horizontal from A to B, but inclined, at an
angle of 35º to the horizontal, from B to C. The block is travelling at a
speed of 12 m/s as it passes point A. The frictional force acting on the
block from A to B is 54,9 N.

2.1.1 Calculate the kinetic energy of the block as it passes point A. (3)
2.1.2 State the work-energy theorem in words. (2)
2.1.3 Calculate the speed of the block as it reaches point B. (4)

2.1.4 The block then slides up the incline from point B and comes to rest
at point C. The frictional force acting on the block from B to C is 45,0 N.
Use energy principles to calculate the distance, x, from B to C. (5)

2.2 A motor pulls a crate, mass 300 kg, up an incline with a constant force
by means of a light, inextensible rope as shown below. The rope runs
over a light, frictionless pulley. The crate moves up the incline at a
constant speed of 0,5 m/s . The coefficient of kinetic friction for the
crate and inclined plane is 0,19.

2.2.1 Define the term power in words. (2)

2.2.2 Calculate the magnitude of the frictional force on the crate. (3)
2.2.3 Calculate the average power delivered by the motor while pulling
the crate up the incline. (6)

QUESTION 3

The siren of a stationary ambulance emits sound with a wavelength of

0,2875 m. When the ambulance moves at a constant speed, a stationary
observer detects a frequency that is 6% LOWER than that emitted by the
siren. Take the speed of sound in air as 345 m/s.
(2)
3.1 Define the Doppler effect in words.
3.2 Is the ambulance moving towards or away from the observer? Give a (2)
reason for your answer.
3.3 Calculate the frequency of the sound emitted by the siren. (3)

3.4 Calculate the speed at which the ambulance is travelling. (5)

QUESTION 4

A police car is moving at a constant speed on a straight horizontal road.

The siren of the car emits sound of constant frequency. EACH of two
observers, A and B, standing some distance apart on the same side of the
road, records the frequency of the detected sound. Observer A records a
frequency of 690 Hz and observer B records a frequency of 610 Hz.

4.1 In which direction is the car moving? Choose from TOWARDS A or (2)
AWAY FROM A. Give a reason for the answer.

4.2 Determine the speed of the police car. Take the speed of sound in air
(6)
as 340 m/s.
