CHAPTER -1 COMPUTER STORAGE AND MEMORY DEVICE

INTRODUCTION

 A Computer is highly organized processing system.

 A Computer process Raw figures and facts (means data) give us processed data or
output.
 Raw figures and facts are known as data.
 Processed data is known as information.
 Bits and Bytes are the basic unit to represent data in the computer system.
 The computer memory stores digital data internally and externally.
 The Computer memory has two parts Internal and External.

Exercises:
A. Name the following:-
1. A highly organized processing system is Computer .
2. Marks of students entered in a computer is Data .
3. The computer memory stores digital data Intenally and Externally.
4. The amount of data stored by the computer is a Data storage unit.
5. The storage capacity is measured in term of Bytes .
6. The drive which is also known as Thumber or Flash drive Pendrive .

B. Fill in the blanks:-

1. Raw figures and facts are known as data .
2. The data after processing becomes information .
3. The roll no. Class , section and marks obtained are example of data .
4. The storage capacity of data is measured in bytes .
5. The HDD is an internal storage device .
6. The USB is an external storage device .
7. The CD,DVD and Blu ray disk is also known as storage device .
C. Write T for true and F for false statement :-
1. A computer is highly organized processing system (T).
2. Raw figures and facts are processed information (F).
3. The storage unit expressed as the amount of data storage (F).
4. The computer has an in-built translator (T).
5. The storage capacity is expressed in bytes (T).
6. The binary digit 0 means false and 1 means true (T).
7. RAM is known as volatile memory (T).
8. ROM is also known volatile memory (F).
9. The storage device CD,DVD,and Blu ray are optical disks (T).
10.The ROM stands for Read only memory (T).

E. Answer the following question :-

Q. 1 State difference between data and information ?

Ans - DATA INFORMATION

a. Raw figures and facts are known a. The meaningful or processed data is known
as data. as information.

b. Example:- Name of students ,roll no, b. Example :- The final report card containing
Class, section and marks obtained in name of student roll no, class, section, marks
examination . obtained in the examination
Q.2 What is the difference between RAM and ROM ?

Ans- RAM ROM

1. Ram stands for Random Access 1.ROM stands for Read Only Memory
Memory.
2. It is a volatile memory. 2. It is a non-volatile memory.
3. It is used for both reading and 3. It is used only for reading data
Writing data.

Q.3 Define Internal memory and external memory?

Ans- Internal memory- The memory already present within the computer is known as internal
memory. Ex. RAM &ROM

External memory- The memory attached externally to store the data and information is
known as external memory. Ex. CD ,DVD ,Pen Drive

Q.4 What are optical disks? Name different types of optical disks?

Ans- An information storage device for a computer in the shape of round flat plate which can
be rotated to give access to all parts of the surface is known as optical disks.
