Solution Assignment 1 - Search Engine Optimization
Section - 1
Q1. Explain how SEO works. Explain in such a way that even a 10-year-old
would understand. (200-300)
Solution -
SEO stands for ‘Search Engine Optimisation’. In simple terms, it means the
process of making changes to your site to increase its visibility on search
engine result pages. Think of a big library as a search engine page where
there are thousands of books present. You as a user entered the library and
you want to read Physics. So, this particular book will be your query. And the
librarian which will act as a spider or bot will provide you with the most
relevant book for Physics.
Like this, when a user types any query, search engines send out web
crawlers to find new and updated content. Web crawlers are also called
‘spiders’ or ‘robots’. Their purpose is to discover new pages that exist and
also to check the content on pages they’ve previously visited to see whether
they’ve changed or been updated. After crawling, the second step is
Indexing. Indexing is when a search engine decides whether or not it is
going to use the content that it has crawled. If a crawled webpage is
considered by a search engine, it will be added to its index. When a
webpage or a piece of content is indexed, it is filed and stored in a database

where it can later be recovered. Most web pages that offer unique and
valuable content are placed into the index. The third and the last step is
Ranking. Ranking can only happen after crawling and Indexing are
complete. So, once a search engine has crawled and indexed the site, it can
be ranked.
There are more than 200 ranking factors that search engines use to sort and
rank content which falls under Technical SEO. Off-page SEO and On-page
SEO. Some ranking factors are : Keyword presence in Title tag, Loading
speed of webpage, Website reputation etc. So, search engines will provide
you with the most relevant content.

a.) Run a search query for “ Guitar lessons” and carefully observe the
SERP. Briefly write down your observations (You can use screenshots to
explain).
Solution-
2
As you can see, when we type Guitar lessons a list of Guitar classes in your
city comes up. This ad format is called Local Search Ads. This ad format is
ideal for advertisers looking to drive store visits or calls to specific business
locations. Name of the business, customer reviews, address, opening and
closing hours along with website link and location (google map) is provided
on the front page of SERP. Local ads are meant to help physical businesses
to grow offline.
We also observe the video ads below the Local search ads. In this ad, we can
see a short snippet of a youtube video with the link, name of the youtube
page, the date on which the video was posted and the important moments
of that particular video. If we click on the ‘View All’ option, we will get a list of
all the videos relevant to that query.

We can see organic search ads just below the Local search ads. This ad
contains title (in blue color), description and website link. If your site is
getting ranked on the 1st page of SERP, it means it is highly optimized with
the help of SEO. There are many On-page and Off-page SEO factors on the
basis of which site gets ranked on the 1st page of SERP. This process takes a
lot of time but the results are unpaid.
