INTRODUCTION TO DATA AND DATA SCIENCE

I. Answer in brief
1. Explain what data is, with the help of two real-life examples.
Ans: Data can be defined as facts or information which can be Stored for
decision making, calculation or discussion. It can be numbers, alphabets,
symbols, or a combination of all of these.
Examples: Weather Forecasting, online Shopping.

2. What are the differences between data and information?

Ans:Data: Raw, unprocessed facts and figures without context. Data can be in
the form of numbers, text, images, etc.
Information: Processed, structured, or organized data that has meaning and is
useful for decision-making or understanding.
Example : The word “apple” is data and the sentence “An apple a day keeps the
doctor away” is information.

3. Write the difference between discrete data and continuous data.

Ans:

4. Write some benefits of data in the entertainment industry in real life?

Ans:
5. What is Data Science?
Ans: Data science is the process of using computers to collect, analyze, and learn
from large amounts of data to find useful patterns or solve problems.

6. List the common career paths for data science?

Ans: The common career paths for data science
❖ Data Scientist
❖ Business Intelligence Analyst
❖ Data Mining Engineer
❖ Data Architect
❖ Senior Data Scientist

7. What is an algorithm? Give Example.

Ans: An algorithm is a set of well-defined instructions in sequence to solve a
problem or to accomplish a task.
An example of simple algorithm to make tea:
step 1 : Pour 100ml of milk in a vessel and heat it.
step 2: After the milk boils add 1 teaspoon of tea powder and sugar.
step 3 : Simmer the milk till the tea boils for 2 minutes.
step 4 : Strain the tea.

Answer in detail
1. Write a note on how data science is helping us.
Ans: Managing Bank Accounts: When you withdraw money from different
ATMs, data science helps to manage your account correctly.
Personalized Suggestions: On social media or video websites, data science
studies your likes and searches to recommend songs & videos
Helping Industries: Companies use data science to understand what people
want to improve their products or services.
Catching Criminals: Data science helps authorities analyze data to track and
catch criminals.
Enhancing Sports: Data science is used in sports to analyze players'
performance and improve strategies, like in cricket, Football etc.,
2. Explain with example the algorithms used in data science with example

A binary classification algorithm helps to divide data into two categories. For
example, it can be used to tell if an email is spam or not spam
Anomaly detection is a process in data science used to identify rare or unusual
patterns that may signal something wrong.
For example: unexpected transaction is done from your debit card could be
flagged as potential fraud in banking

Regression algorithm is a type of algorithm in data science used to predict

continuous numerical values based on input data.
Example: How much rainfall will we receive this year?

A Clustering algorithm is a type of algorithm used in data science to group data

points into clusters based on their similarities.
Examples: Students can be categorized into groups based on their height.

Reinforcement Learning is a type of machine learning where a machine learns

to make decisions by receiving rewards for correct actions and penalties for
wrong actions. Example: self-driving car, Robot.,
3. Define the following :
a) Data Scientist
b) Business Intelligence Analyst
c) Data Mining Engineer
d) Data Architect
e) Senior Data Scientist
Ans:
1. Data Scientist
Data scientists analyze large amounts of structured and unstructured data. They
use skills in computer science, statistics, and mathematics.
2. Business Intelligence Analyst
Business Intelligence Analysts evaluate data to understand market trends and
business performance.
3. Data Mining Engineer
Data Mining Engineers extract valuable information from data and build
algorithms to analyze data.
4. Data Architect
Data Architects design the structure of data management systems to create
blueprints and integrate data from various sources.
5. Senior Data Scientist
Senior Data Scientists focus on predicting future business needs. They set
standards for data analysis and develop tools for deeper understanding.

4. Explain DIKW pyramid with an example.

Ans: Data after transformation to information can also be converted to
knowledge and wisdom. This is called the DIKW model also known as the
DIKW pyramid.
