1. Indigenous fire management is based on the concept of controlled fires.

These fires are

lit during the cool season, and help to clear vegetation that would fuel bushfires during
fire season. This practice is based on their traditional knowledge on maintaining
ecosystems.
2. Controlled fires can have a positive impact on the environment through clearing
vegetation to prevent the spread of bushfires, encouraging new growth of plants, and
allowing a path for animals to escape if a bushfire were to ignite.
3. Non-Indigenous Australians rely on the use of technical equipment to maintain the
environment, while Indigenous Australians use more traditional methods. As seen in
table, non-Indigenous Australians use techniques such as culling, fire extinguishers and
pesticides to maintain the environment, namely feral animals, weeds and bushfires.
However, Indigenous Australians use more natural methods, such as the use of
controlled fires to prevent bushfires.
4. The practices of Indigenous Australians can contribute to broader conservation
methods as they have been living in the environment for thousands of years, and have
developed sustainable land management strategies. This information can be used to
improve or change conventional practices such as the use of controlled burns.
5. The use of wetland burning is a sustainable solution to address bushfires. This strategy
can promote the growth of fauna and flora and is a method of preventing bushfires
beforehand rather than addressing fires during the fire season.
