Week 1.

Basic computer skills week - Todo list

Step 1: Learning the theory part (Watch the lecture


videos and read the notes)
Basic computer skills
1.1: Understanding your operating system
● Watch the video
● Read the corresponding note section
● Hands on computer:
○ Write some text on your Notepad, then use the common
keyboard shortcuts (select all, copy, paste, cut, find, undo,
redo, & save)
○ Install Google chrome, WhatsApp Desktop, and Zoom.

1.2: Understanding folders, files and applications


● Watch the video
● Read the corresponding note section
● Hands on computer:
○ Create a folder called “Evangadi” on your Desktop. Inside the
“Evangadi” folder, create another folder called “Phase-1”.
Inside the “Phase-1” folder, create a folder called “Basic
Computer Skills”.
○ Open your Desktop folder starting from the C drive, and copy
your Evangadi folder.
○ Then open your Downloads folder starting from the C drive
and paste the folder you copied.
○ Finally, navigate to your Downloads folder, open the Evangadi
folder > Phase-1 folder > Basic Computer Skills folder, and
inside there, create a file called "firstClass.txt".
1.3: Compressing (zipping) and decompressing (unzipping)
● Watch the video
● Read the corresponding note section
● Hands on computer:
○ Navigate to the Downloads folder. Zip (compress) the
Evangadi folder, move it to your documents folder and UnZip
(decompress) it.

1.4: Specializing on web related files as a web developer


● Watch the video
● Read the corresponding note section
● Hands on computer:
○ Download and Install VScode.

1.5: Understanding Visual Studio Code (VSC)


● Watch the video
● Read the corresponding note section
● Hands on computer:
○ On VScode, open your "Phase-1" folder from the Desktop,
which is located inside the Evangadi folder.
○ Create a folder called "html-practice", then inside it create a file
called "my-first-code.html" and write the text "Hello World" on
it.
○ Install the following VScode extensions:
■ Open in browser (TechER)
■ Material icon theme (Philipp Kief)
■ Prettier - Code Formatter (Prettier)
■ Auto rename tag (Jun Han)
■ Indent rainbow (oderwat)
■ CSS Peek (Pranay Prakash)
■ JS JSX Snippets (sky ran)
■ Live Server (Ritwick Dey)
1.6: Understanding your browser (Chrome)
● Watch the video
● Read the corresponding note section
● Hands on computer:
○ Open the file "my-first-code.html" on Google chrome
(browser).
○ Change your default search engine in Google Chrome to
Google.
○ Set Google chrome to your default browser.
○ Disable any extensions that you are not using in Google
Chrome.

Visual Studio Code (VSC) - Basic skills you need to know


** You will use VSC almost everyday. Please take your time to understand the
VSC editor even more. Please use the videos on this page.

As you go through the video, please follow these steps


1.1 Create and Open Folder/Files in VSC
● Watch the video
● Hands on computer:
○ Practice creating folders and files on VSC
○ Practice opening already existing folders on VSC

1.2 Install VSC Extensions

● Hands on computer:
○ Install Open in default browser (by peakchen90)
○ Install Live Server (by Ritwick Dey)
○ Install Material icon theme (by Philipp Kief)
○ Install Prettier (by Prettier) and change the settings along with
video
○ Install CSS Peek (by Pranay Prakash)
○ Install Indent rainbow (by Odewart)
○ Install Auto rename tag (Jun Han)
○ JS JSX Snippets (sky ran)

1.3 Increase/Decrease Text Size in VSC

● Hands on computer:
○ Adjust your VSC text size to your personal preference

1.4 Split VSC Editor Vertically


● Watch the video
● Hands on computer:
○ Try to split VSC Editor screen Vertically

1.5 Change VSC Settings (Word Wrap, Auto Save, Auto Indent)
● Watch the video
● Hands on computer:
○ Set Word Wrap on

Note:
By the time you've finished learning the theory, you should be able to:
1. Prepare all questions for which you will need additional explanations.
● Make sure your questions are organized along with the
corresponding videos
2. Redo all the class demos on your computer
Step 2: Attend the live classes
● This is your opportunity to get answers to any theoretical questions you
may have
Note:
● Re-watching and discussing the lectures reinforces what you've
learned

Step 3: Complete the knowledge checklist


● Go through the knowledge checklist to ensure that you understand all of
the key points.

Step 4: Work on the exercises


This week's exercise is to complete these five assignments. Detailed steps

Note:
● First, try to work on the assignments on your own. Make a list of all
the questions and difficulties you encountered while working on the
assignments. During group discussion hours, you will discuss these
with your teachers.
Step 5: Attend group discussions
Note:
● This is the time to address any difficulties you encountered while
working on the assignments.
● This is also an opportunity to discuss any questions you may have
about this week's topic.
