ethical and social

issues related to
computing

Assoc. Prof. Kazeem O. Oyebode

Ph.D. Computer Engineering
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

● To identify societal issues that might arise from using computing devices.

● To discuss ethical issues that might arise from the use of computing devices

● To propose recommendations
ethical and social issues related to computing

Computing technologies raise a number of moral and societal challenges that require
serious thought.

● Privacy
● Bias and fairness
● Automation and job displacement
● Cybersecurity and digital threats
● Environmental impact
Privacy

● There are worries regarding the protection of people's privacy as a result of the
growing amount of personal data that computing systems gather and process.
Questions concerning the proper use and preservation
of personal information are raised by problems like data
breaches, unwanted access, and surveillance.
Privacy
Bias and Fairness

● Machine learning models and algorithms may unintentionally reinforce biases

found in the data they are trained on, producing discriminating results. When
relying on automated systems, fairness in decision-making processes, such as
hiring, lending, and criminal justice,
is a major challenge.
Automation and Job Displacement

● Task and process automation might result in employment loss and economic
instability. Concerns about how computing technologies would affect the
workforce have led to the creation of plans to reskill and retrain those who will be
affected by automation.
Automation and Job Displacement
Cybersecurity and Digital Threats

● Computing systems' interconnectedness exposes weaknesses that could be

used maliciously. Hacking, data breaches, identity theft, and cyber attacks are
just a few of the problems that pose serious threats to the security and integrity
of digital infrastructure and personal data.
Cybersecurity and Digital Threats
Environmental Impact

● Environmental problems are exacerbated by the rising demand for computing

resources and the energy used by data centers and electronic gadgets. To
reduce the negative effects on the environment, energy efficiency, ethical e-
waste management, and
environmentally friendly computing methods are essential.

Solution

● A multidisciplinary strategy encompassing legislators, business executives,

scholars, and society at large is necessary to address these ethical and social
challenges. It entails creating and putting into effect rules, encouraging
accountability and transparency, fostering diversity and inclusivity, and taking
into account the wider societal ramifications of computing technology.
Summary
Summary

● We identified societal issues that might arise from using computing

devices..
● We also discussed ethical issues that might arise from the use of
computing devices
● Finally, we proposed recommendations
