18. By selling a car for K500 000, a loss was made at the rate of 6t per Kwacha. Find the amount lost.
Solution
Given: Selling Price (SP) = K500 000
Loss% = 6%
The first thing to be found is Cost Price (CP)
Cost Price% = 100%, Selling Price% = 100% − 6% = 94%
If 94% = K500 000
Then 100% = More

So this will be:

This means we have Cost Price K531 914.89 and Selling Price K500 000.00
∴ Loss = CP − SP
Loss = K531 914.89 − K500 000.00 = 𝐊𝟑𝟏 𝟗𝟏𝟒. 𝟖𝟗

27. Table 3 shows rates of tax on salaries per month for a certain year.
Table 3
Salary per month Rate of tax

First K900 0% (tax free)

Next K3000 15%

Over K12000 30%

Use the information in Table 3 to calculate the monthly tax a worker pays on a monthly
salary of K18500
Solution
Salary Rate Tax
First K900 0% (tax free) K0
Next K3000 15%

K450
Over K14600 30%
K4380

Total monthly tax K450 + K4380 = 𝐊𝟒, 𝟖𝟑𝟎

Explanation
From the total amount given (K18500) take out K900 which will be
charged 0% tax, then take K3000 from the remainder and calculate its
15% tax. The final remainder should be charged 30% tax. Add the total
taxes you found to get the monthly tax.
