AND FORMAT

Presented by
GROUP 3
what is a filename
extension?
A filename extension is a suffix added to the
end of a file name, typically consisting of a
period followed by a few characters, which
identifies the file's format or type. The
operating system and software use the
extension to determine how to open and
process the file.
purpose of file extensions
> Recognition of File Format: File extensions indicate the format of
a file, helping both users and applications identify what type of
content it contains (e.g., text, image, audio).

> User Understanding: Users can quickly assess the nature of a file
by looking at its extension, which aids in organizing and
managing files.

> Identification of Potential Risks: Recognizing file extensions helps

users to be cautious with certain file types that may carry risks,
such as executable files (.exe) which can potentially contain
malware.

> Preventing Misuse: Some systems may restrict the execution of

certain file types based on their extensions to prevent
unauthorized or harmful actions.
common types of file extensions:

AUDIO FILES PROGRAMMING FILES

TEXT FILES PRESENTATION FILES

IMAGE FILES COMPRESSED FILES

Audio files are digital files that store sound data, such as
music, speech, or any other audio recordings. They come
in various formats, each with its own characteristics
regarding file size, quality, and compression method.

— .mp3 – MPEG Audio Layer III (MP3 format)

— .wav – Waveform Audio File (WAV format)

— .flac – Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC format)

text files
Text files are simple digital files that contain plain text
without any complex formatting (such as bold, italics, or
images). They are typically used for storing data in a
human-readable form, making them one of the most basic
and widely compatible file types.

— .txt – Plain text file

take up less storage space and be transferred more
quickly over the internet. Compression can be either lossy
(which reduces file size by removing some data) or lossless
(which reduces file size without losing any information).
