Lecture 9-10

1. Introduction
a. Involves multiple applications

ii. Trains
iii. Clocks
iv. Races & Games
b. Motion of a body
i. 3 variables → Time, Speed and Distance
c. Formula
d. Conversion

2. Proportionals in TSD
a. s → d, t is constant
b. t → d, s is constant
c. s → 1/t, d is constant

3. Applications
a. Two trains start at same time and travel towards each other meet in t time.
i. In this case time is constant → S1/S2 = D1/D2
b. A car is running at a speed of 40kmph for 60 min. How much distance will it
cover in 150 min?
i. In this case speed is constant → T1/T2 = D1/D2
c. A goes from point X to Y and comes back.
i. In this case distance is constant → S1/S2 = T2/T1
d. Questions
i. A takes 10hrs to cover a distance at 20kmph. If speed is increased by
50% during the return journey. Find the % decrease in time!
e. Average
i. Raman covers 20 kms at the speed of 15kmph and other 10kms at the
speed of 6kmph. What is his average speed throughout this journey?

4. Questions on Proportionalities
a. Walking at 3/4th normal speed, Abhishek is 16 min late to office. What is his
normal time required to reach office
b. X and Y travel the same distance at 6kmph and 10kmph. If X takes 1 hour
longer than Y. Find the distance travelled.
c. At 12kmph Rohit reaches 10 min after train is gone and at 15kmph he
reaches 10 min before. Find the distance

5. Relative Speed
a. Opp Direction
i. Approach
ii. Separation
1. If distance between two trains is 280 km. Find the time
required to meet if they are travelling at 30 and 50kmph
towards each other
2. When will the distance be 280 km again?
b. Same Direction
i. Approach
ii. Separation
1. Two cars start at 2PM at the same point. One with 50 kmph
and other with 30 kmph. When will the distance between them
be 140 km

6. Questions on Relative Speed

a. A starts at 8AM at 60kmph towards B separated at distance of 330km.
B starts at 9AM with 75kmph towards A. When will they meet?
b. X start moving towards Y separated at 500km at 50kmph. After 2 hours, Y
starts moving towards X at 30kmph. How far from X will they meet?
c. The distance between two cities A and B is 100km. and the speeds of Ram
and Anuj are 15 km/h and 25km/h respectively. Initially both are at A and start
moving toward B. If they move between A and B to and fro then answer the
question, Find the time required for the 1st meeting.
i. Distance covered by Anuj in the 1st meeting
ii. Ratio of distance covered at 4th meeting
d. The distance between two cities A and B is 100km and the speeds of Ram
and Anuj are 15 km/h and 25km/h respectively. Initially Ram is at A & Anuj is

⭐⭐⭐
at B. If they move between A and B to and from then answer the following
questions: Distance covered by Anuj till the 3rd meeting.

7. Circular Motion
a. S1, S2, S3 are 20 kmph, 15 kmph and 12 kmph respectively travelling in a
circular loop of 100 km clockwise.
i. Find when will they meet again at the starting point?
ii. When will they meet for the first time?
iii. How many round all three would have completed?
b. A and B are running on a circular track of length 1000 m. Speed of A is 25
m/s and speed of B is 10 m/s. They start from the same point at the same
time in the opposite directions.
i. When will they meet for the first time
ii. & at the starting point again?
Applications of Time, Speed and Distance

1. Trains
a. A train crosses a man, pole or another train
i. If the length of the object is 0
1. The time required is simply length of the train upon speed
ii. If length is non-zero
1. The time required is sum of their length upon the speed
iii. Here the speed is relative speed of train and object
b. Two trains 108m and 112m in length are running towards each other on the
parallel lines at a speed of 45 km/hr and 54 km/hr respectively. To cross each
other after they meet, it will take
c. Two trains, each 100 m long, moving in opposite directions, cross each other
in 8 seconds. If one is moving twice as fast the other, then the speed of the
faster train is
d. A train travels at a certain average speed for distance of 63 km and then
travels a distance of 72 km at an average speed of 6 km/hr more than its
original speed. If it takes 3 hours to complete the total journey, what is the
original speed of the train in km/hr?
i. 33, 42, 24, 66

2. Boats and Streams

a. Upstream
b. Downstream
c. Speed of Boat is always the average of Up and Downstream speed
d. Questions
i. A boat travels downstream 30km in 3 hrs and upstream in 5hrs. Find
speed of boat and stream
ii. A boat moves with a speed of 5 kmph in still water. When the river
flows at 1kmph, the boat takes 80 minutes to go from a point A to B
and come back. What is the distance between the two points?
iii. A boat goes 6 km in one hour in still water, but takes thrice as much
time in going the same distance against the current. The speed of
current (in kmph) is:

3. Clocks
a. Right angles → 2
b. Straight Lines → 2
c. Minute hand moves → 360º/hour → 6º/min
d. Hour hand moves → 360º/12hours → 30º/hour
e. Relative speed of Min and Hour hand is 330º/hour
f. Questions
i. If clock is striking 1-2. When will the first straight line be formed?
ii. If clock is striking 4-5. When will the second straight line be formed?
iii. If clock is striking 6-7. When will the first right angle be formed?
iv. If clock is striking 8-9. When will the second right angle be formed?
v. Find the number of right angle formed by a clock in a day?
vi. Find the number of straight lines formed by a clock in a day?

4. Races and Games of Skills

a. In a 200m race A can give B a start of 20m, B can give C a start of 30 m. In a
1km game, A can give C start of?
b. In a 100 m race Aman wins over Bharat by 8 m and Bharat can give a start of
10m to Chirag in 100 m race. Now answer the following questions
Find the ratio of speeds of Aman, Bharat, Chirag.
c. In a 100 m race Aman wins over Bharat by 8 meter or by 1 second. Bharat
can give a start of 10 meter to Chirag in 100 meter race. Now answer the

⭐⭐
following questions. By how much time Aman will win over Chirag in a 1 km
race.
i. 20.5 sec, 23.89 sec, 22 sec, None
