CHAPTER I

NTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Extreme weather is a condition which the effect of a weather is unlike the it’s normal pattern and
severity. This phenomenon occurs mostly because of the climate change that happens in our world. This
occurrence is known because of its effects not only towards the people but also human infrastructure.
Extreme weather conditions that have different types and the most common ones that occur here in the
Philippines frequently is heatwave and heavy rainfall. The impact of this extreme weather varies on the
type of it that the respondents experience.

Heatwave is an abnormal phenomenon where is the heat of the certain area exceeds it’s normal
temperature. It is a period of abnormally hot weather generally lasting more than two days. Heatwave
have the capability to cover a large area, exposing a high number of people to a dangerous heat. One of
the cause of this extreme weather condition is the climate change and also because of the fact that we are
inside the Pacific ring of fire. If the body of a person don’t have the ability withstand those changes it
might cause them heat cramps, heat exhaustion, hyperthermia and stroke. There are the unavailable
results that you may encounter because of the sudden change of weather.

Heavy rainfall is an extreme weather condition where the intensity of the rain is more destructive
that it is supposed to be. Heavy rainfall can be categorized by its level or intensity. As the wind speed
increases, the level also increases, until it becomes a typhoon with a wind speed of 118 km/h or a super
typhoon with a wind speed of 185 km/h. One of the factors that increases as the intensity goes up is the
violence of the weather. With the intensity increasing, the damage that the weather may produce becomes
more severe and visible, not only to the unfortunate ones that don’t have a more stable house but to all of
the people that may be affected by the weather.
 Education is one of the most important things that a person can receive in his life. This process is
most commonly done inside a school, which includes a teacher who provides the information and
knowledge and a student who is the one to receive the teaching. Through this process, the knowledge that
the teacher has learned and gathered can be passed on to someone to help them excel in a certain
profession or gain some understanding about a certain topic. That they can use in the future or in their
time of need. With the things that the school can provide for the students, it is visible to the naked eye
how important the school premises are to the learners. That shows how necessary it is to provide some
support for our education to help them enhance their competency and overall performance.

Extreme weather condition is an event that may occur wherever you are, especially at school. The
heatwave may affect the focus of the students during class. As the heavy rainfall affects the capability of
the students to enter the school and because of the capability of a heavy rainfall to cause disturbances that
may affect the flow of teaching, like blackouts, floods, and sudden class cancellations, it is safe to say that
there is a heavy connection between the heavy rainfall and the students. By conducting this research, the
researchers will be able to provide the helpful ways to prevent the further damages that the heavy rainfall
may inflict or to lessen the harmful effects of heavy rainfall on education.
Conceptual Framework

A student’s education is significantly impacted by extreme weather. Lagmay, D. and Rodrigo, T.

(2022) says that extreme weather events will have an influence on schooling, causing both economic and
bodily harm. Teenagers and young adults are required to discontinue their studies following the incident
to assist lessen its impact. The schooling of young children from financially insecure homes, on the other
hand, receives less financial and parental support, which over time results in a significant accomplishment
difference. According to the information provided by them, it is clear that depending on how badly or
significantly the harsh weather conditions influence the children, it also has an impact on their education
overall.

The impact of extreme weather and its nature on high school students’ education is depicted in
Figure 1 below. Figure 1 demonstrates the two different types of extreme weather communication that are
regularly seen in the Philippines, which is the heatwave and heavy rainfall. Additionally, it is assumed
that the variables are connected linearly.

1. There is a present connect between the extreme weather condition and education?

H1: There is a significant relationship between extreme weather condition and education

H0: There is no significant relationship between extreme weather condition and education

Statement of the problem

This study focuses on the effect of extreme weather condition on the education of students. This study is
concerned about the academic learning of students on how their studies are affected when they experience
a extreme weather condition.

3.What are the ways to mitigate the effect of extreme weather?

Scope and Delimitations

The idea of this study is to Investigate the impact of heavy rainfall towards the education of senior
high school students. The researcher studies and look for the connection the variables being studied in this
study are random G-11 and G-12 students only.

This study will be conducted at the St. Joseph High of Laligan, Inc among the G-11 and G-12
students during the first semester of the academic year 2023-2024.

Significance of the Study

This study would be significant to its readers as it serves them the fundamental information about
the effects of typhoon towards the academic learning of a student.

Particularly, this study is beneficial to the following:

To the Students. This study will help the students to know the impact of extreme weather towards to their
education.

To the Parents. This will give them an idea on how it is important for them to give an especial support to
their kids to prevent the further effect of the certain extreme weather that they might encounter.

To the Teachers. This study will give them an insight about the effects of extreme weather towards their
students.

To the School Administrators. With the help of this research the school administrators will be able to find
out a way to lessen the impact of extreme weather.

To the Government. This study will give them the idea of how important it is to support our school for
them to have extreme weather resilient schools.

To the Future Researchers. This study will help the future researchers as this study can act as one of their
basis in making their own research.

Definition of tems

Extreme weather. Occurrence of unusually severe weather climate conditions that can cause
devastating impacts on communities and agricultural and natural ecosystem (climatehubs.usda.gov). In
this study, a severe or unseasonal weather that occurs uncommonly for a given region and/or time.
 Education . The field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary). In this study, it is the process of educating children about a particular
subject or skill that will benefit them in the future.

Student. One who attends a school (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). In this study, the persons that
teachers in schools are assessing.

Impact. the force of impression of one thing on another : a significant or major effect (Merriam-
Webster Dictionary). In this study, it is an effect towards something.
