The Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIK) has been ranked for the first time in Mechanical and Electrical
engineering in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023.
l Currently the Mechanical Engineering stands at # 3 in Pakistan and among the 451-500
universities of the world.
l The Electrical Engineering stands at # 5 in Pakistan and among the 501-520 universities of the

Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2023


This year GIK institute secured an overall position of 81 globally out of 1304 institutions worldwide and
stood 1st among all Pakistani Engineering Universities in Times Higher Education (THE) University
Impact Rankings 2023 in the category of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-4) “Quality Education”.
In SDG 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities, GIK Institute achieved an overall position of 401-600
globally and stood 2nd amongst all Pakistani Engineering Universities. The GIK Institute Ranked 800-

In the current year, the GIK Institute actively engaged in the international GreenMetric assessment,

Quality of Academic Programs

Accreditation of Programs
GIK Institute offered programs are accredited by the concerned accreditation bodies as well as in line
with the Washington Accord standards. Our curricula are designed to meet international standards,
with a focus on student-centered education and an emphasis on lifelong learning. This year the
following programs received accreditation:
Ÿ BS Software Engineering was offered in Fall 2023 intake following provisional approval by
National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC).

27th Convocation
On June 23, 2023, GIK Institute held its annual convocation ceremony, a momentous event for the 465
students who were graduating with their bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. The ceremony,
attended by the Chancellor, SOPREST and GIK Institute leadership, Deans, Directors, faculty, officers,
and the families of the graduating class, applauded the students' hard work and dedication to their
studies. The ceremony was a celebration of the students' academic achievements and commitment to
leadership, teamwork, and integrity in all aspects of life. A total of 394 students graduated with their
bachelor's degrees, 60 with their master's degrees, and 11 with their PhDs. The Chief Guest, Chairman
Senate, Mr. Sadiq Sanjrani, addressed the graduating class, praising their efforts and reminding them of
the many opportunities that lay ahead. The convocation ceremony was a fitting conclusion to the
students' time at GIK Institute and a celebration of their many accomplishments. We wish them all the
best as they move on to new and exciting opportunities.

Admissions 2023

In 2023, GIK Institute's academic community expanded with 2023 enthusiastic undergraduate
students, 169 postgraduate learners pursuing MS degrees, and 59 pioneering PhD candidates. This
influx of talented individuals promises to fuel innovation and research across diverse fields, solidifying
GIK's position as a leading academic center.

Scholarships and Financial Assistance


During 2022-2023, 381 scholarships worth over Rs. 217 million were distributed among the students.
These scholarships were funded by both the GIK Institute and other supporting agencies.

New Achievements, Initiatives and Projects


President of Pakistan Honors GIK Institute as a Leading University in Technical Education
GIK Institute, one of the most prestigious engineering institutes in Pakistan, has received a high
recognition from the President of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi, for its outstanding services and achievements in
the field of technical education. The award reflects the dedication and excellence of the administration,
faculty, staff, and students of GIK Institute, who have been contributing to the national and
international development of science and technology.
Institute Receives Award from Huawei for Outstanding ICT Academy
Huawei Pakistan has awarded the Outstanding ICT Academy shield to GIK Institute during the Career
Fair held on February 22, 20233. The shield was awarded for the excellent performance of the
HAINA@GIK.
New Programs Offered
Under the guidance and supervision of the Rector GIK Institute, Dr. Fazal Ahmad Khalid, SI, Dean
FCS&E, and the team worked hard to get all the required pieces into place to meet the stringent
deadlines for starting the Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security program by Fall 2022, and Bachelor of
Science in Software Engineering by Fall 2023.
GIK Institute Secures €800,000 Erasmus+ Grant for AR/VR in Education
The Institute, in collaboration with seven other universities from Pakistan and Europe, has won a
coveted €800,000 Erasmus+ grant from the European Union. The grant will fund a project that aims to
improve the quality of graduate engineering education by using Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual
Reality (VR) technologies, based on a novel concept of Digital Twining.
GIK Institute Secures Grant for Establishment of National Center for Quantum Computing
The Institute has received a share of 300 million PKR for the establishment of a National Center for
Quantum Computing on its campus. The center will be a hub for research and innovation in the
emerging field of quantum computing, which promises to revolutionize various domains. The center will
also collaborate with other national and international institutions to advance the state-of-the-art in
quantum computing.
HBL Center for Blockchain & Applied Research Established at the Institute
The institute has established a state-of-the-art research center in collaboration with Habib Bank Ltd.
(HBL), one of the leading banks in Pakistan. The center, named as HBL Center for Blockchain and
Applied Research, is the first of its kind in the country and aims to leverage the expertise of academics in
futuristic technologies of blockchain, machine learning, and cyber-security, for addressing industry-
proposed problems. The center will also foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and skill development
among the students and faculty of the institute.
OGDCL, GIK Institute to Collaborate on Green Hydrogen Project
The institute has taken a significant step towards advancing its research and innovation in the field of
green hydrogen, a clean and climate-neutral fuel for the global energy transition. The institute has
submitted a proposal for working on green hydrogen with Oil and Gas Development Company Limited
(OGDCL), one of the largest oil and gas exploration and production companies in Pakistan.
The proposal is an extension of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two
organizations, which covers the areas of renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and technology.
CPD Activities
The institute has organized 27 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) workshops in the past two

years, covering various topics and domains relevant to the staff, faculty, and students of the institute.
The workshops aimed to provide professional trainings and courses to enhance the participants'
knowledge, skills, and competencies, as per the changing norms and developments in their respective
fields.
Faculty and Staff Promotions
The institute has recognized the outstanding performance and contributions of its faculty and staff by
awarding them deserved promotions. In the past two years, the following promotions have taken
place:
Ÿ Six Associate Professors have been elevated to the rank of Professor.
Ÿ Twelve Assistant Professors have advanced to the position of Associate Professor.
Ÿ One hundred and eighty-six staff and officers have moved up to the next cadre.
These promotions reflect the institute's commitment to excellence and quality in education and
research.
Curriculum Review and Common First Year
The institute has been continuously reviewing and updating its curriculum to keep pace with the
national and international standards and trends in education. The Board of Studies has recommended
the inclusion of new courses and updated course content to cover novel technologies and approaches
such as AI, Generative Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Blockchain, 3D Printing and Additive
Manufacturing, Chip Design, Fintech, and others. These courses aim to equip the students with the
skills and knowledge required for the 21st century. In addition, the institute has also introduced a
Common First Year for all freshmen, starting from the Fall 2022 intake.
Inauguration of New Girl's Hostel
The Fall 2023 semester heralded the inauguration of Hostel 13, a new girls' dormitory at the Institute.
This 91-room facility, accommodating 180 students, represents the Institute's unwavering
commitment to providing a holistic educational experience.
Installation of 2MW Solar Power Plant
The Institute marked a significant step towards sustainable energy with the inauguration of a new
1MW solar power plant. This landmark project, financed by the National Bank of Pakistan and GIK's
parent body, SOPREST, reinforces the institute's commitment to environmental responsibility and clean
energy solutions. In 2023, the Institute installed another 1MW Solar Power Project, increasing its total
solar power capacity to over 2MW. The project was inaugurated by Mr. Ashar Aziz, Chairman of

Research and Innovation
Research Projects, Funding, and Proposals
The institute has been actively pursuing research excellence and innovation with the support of various
external sponsors. Some of the prominent sponsors are Higher Education Commission, Pakistan
Science Foundation, ASHRAE, NESCOM, Habib Bank Ltd., and Pakistan Engineering Council. Currently,
the institute has 42 ongoing research projects in diverse fields. These projects aim to address the
challenges and opportunities of the 21st century and contribute to the national and global
development.

Research Publications
Our research output remained consistent in 2023, with a total of 337 publications in 2023 and 347
publications in 2022. Notably, conference paper presentations saw a significant rise of 44%,
showcasing our active engagement in disseminating research findings within the academic
community. While the percentage of high-impact publications went from 78% to 74%, the overall
number remained impressive, highlighting the continued quality and impact of our research
endeavors.

Ada's AI Spark: GIKI Alum Arslan Javed's AI Startup Selected


for Dubai Future Foundation Accelerator Program
Arslan Javed (Batch 17) co-founded Ada's AI Spark, one of 30 startups selected from 615 applicants
from 55 countries, to develop innovative AI solutions for government and media sectors. The Dubai
Centre for AI, inaugurated by HH Sheikh Hamdan, aims to make Dubai a global leader in AI. Arslan also
co-founded Graana.com and serves on the board of NextTrain.io.

Zyp Technologies Revolutionizes Motorcycle Industry with Electric Vehicles

Indus Valley Capital led a $1.2M seed round for Zyp, enabling them to build their first electric motorbikes and
ba ery swapping sta ons. Zyp aims to electrify Pakistan's 25 million motorbikes, addressing trade imbalance,
infla on, fuel costs, and air quality. Their me culously designed motorbikes and ba ery swapping technology
perform well in Pakistan's environment. The Zum 2000 has a 75km/h speed, 70km range, and 30-second ba ery

Open House and Career Fair


GIK Institute fosters a dynamic connection between industry and academia through its annual Open
House and Career Fair events. Each year, graduating students showcase their cutting-edge Final Year
Projects to a diverse audience of over 70 leading companies from across Pakistan. This vibrant platform
allows industry professionals to conduct on-site interviews and hire talent, while students gain
invaluable insights into career opportunities and professional networking.

Two successful events were held in 2023: a Career Fair in February and a combined Open House and
Career Fair in May. Both events saw enthusiastic participation from students and companies alike,
