Week 25 Learning Area Mathematics Grade Level Grade 10

Quarter 3rd Quarter Date

I. Performance The students are able to learn what is mutually

Standards exclusive events as well as engage in a fun learning
experience.
II. Lesson Title Events
III. Intervention Proba-BARES
IV. Learning
Competencies Illustrate Mutually Exclusive Events (M10SP-IIIi-1)

V. Learning At the end of the discussion, 80% of the students

Objectives should be able to:
• Determine what is mutually exclusive events.
• Illustrate mutually exclusive events; and
• Relate the lesson in real life scenario
VI. Instructional
Materials White board, white board marker, visual aids

VII. References • Mutually Exclusive Events - Definition, Formula,

VIII. Learning
Teacher’s Activity
Phases

Recap of the previous lesson…

Let’s talk about it:

In your seats, facing your partner, talk about what
preference you like in terms of foods, books,
characteristics, and more. At least one
A. Activity
preference you have that does not match and
make a Venn diagram about it.

After you finished your activity, I will be going to

choose at least 3 pairs to present their work and
answer why did you put it there?

Very Good! What do you think is the relevance of our

B. Analysis activity to our next lesson?

I guess you are now ready for our next lesson which is
mutually exclusive events. Take a proper seat, get
your notebook and pen, and listen attentively to our
discussion.

Mutually Exclusive Events

C. Abstraction
Mutually exclusive events cannot be independent,
and independent events cannot be mutually exclusive.

Mutually Exclusive Events

• Are events that cannot occur at the same time.
• This event has no common outcomes.
• In two events A and B, if A occurs then B is
excluded. That is, A and B cannot happen
together.
• Two events are mutually exclusive if their
intersection is an empty set.

Not Mutually Exclusive Events

• This term describes things that can exists or
happen together at the same time.
• It means one thing does not prevent or limit the
other from being possible.

Independent Events
• If the probability of occurrence of an event A is
not affected by the occurrence of another event
• B, then A and B are said to be independent
events.

Dependent Events
• Two events are dependent if the occurrence of
one event affects the probability of the other.

Examples of Mutually Exclusive Events:

1. Tossing a coin is an example of mutually
exclusive events because getting a head or tail
cannot occur at the same time.

A (Head) = {1} B (Tail) = {1}

This event is a sure event since it has exactly one
outcome.
(AՍB) = {2}
(AՈB) = {0}
This means that the intersection of events is impossible.

2. if you were asked to pick a number between

1 to 10 you cannot pick a number that is both
odd and even number.

A B S

1 3 2 6
5 4

7 9 8 10

A (Odd numbers) = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}

B (Even numbers) = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10}
(AՍB) = {10}
(AՈB) = {0}
This means that the intersection of events is impossible.

3. You are losing your way in the jungle and

need to choose which way you are going
between left and right is a mutually exclusive
events because you cannot go in both
directions.

A (Right) = {1} B (Left) = {1}

(AՍB) = {2} (AՈB) = { }
This means that the intersection of events is impossible.

Example of Not Mutually Exclusive Events:

1. tossing two coins is not mutually exclusive events
because the outcome may be a head and a tail at the
same time.

(AՍB) = {3}
(AՈB) = {1}

2. Rolling a die. You are supposing of getting an even

number and divisible by 3.

Sample space = {6}

A (Even Numbers) = {3}
B (Divisible by 3) = {2}

(AՍB) = {4} (AՈB) = {1}

3. Deck of cards: A = heart card with faces;

B = king card

A (heart card with face) = {3}

B (king card) = {4}

(AՍB) = {6} (AՈB) = {1}

Example of Independent Events:

• Tossing a coin and rolling a die
• Getting high grade and being muse
• Cleaning house and listening to music
• Buying grocery and eating an apple

• Playing games and talking to your friends

Example of Dependent Events:

• Buying lottery tickets and winning in the lottery
• Studying and getting high grade
• Choosing the wrong way and getting lost
• Failing a grade and retaking the subject
• violating rules and getting punished

✓ Based on the examples given we can analyze

that mutually exclusive events have no
❖ Generalization intersection since the two events cannot happen
at the same time.

D. Application 4th game: PROBA-Engage

Mechanics:
1. The students will be divided with the same
group from the previous game.
2. The game will consist of 15 problems they need to
identify and illustrate. Each correct items will have
corresponding points.
3. Each correct illustrations are equivalent to 3 points.
The first group to answer correctly is the one who will
receive the points.
4. During the game, the following materials will be used:
• A board (provided by the facilitator)
• Writing material (whiteboard marker)
• Eraser (tissue)
5. Each problem is printed in a sheet of paper to be
given each group.
6. The groups will be given same problems at the start
of the game.
7. Problems will be given one at a time.
8. The question can be answered by each student from
a group and can be strategized by the group.
9. Each question will be answered within 1 minute.
10. The first group to raise their board and got the correct
answer will receive the points.
11. The group who has the most correct answers will be
the winner and get the rewards.

VIII. Evaluation
Direction: illustrate the following using Venn Diagram and tell if it is mutually
exclusive events or NOT.
1. Rolly is going to buy in the store but he drops his coins.
2. A die is rolled. (A) getting odd numbers and (B) getting numbers
divisible by 4.
3. Jayson is buying fruits. Mango, grapes, strawberries, apple, and
oranges. (A) Buying red fruits. (B) other fruits.
