Speaker 1: I’m studying (1) ………………………… at the moment and I find it really hard to
keep motivated sometimes. There are so many facts and figures to learn and the exams
are really (2) ………………………… so you’ve got to study hard all the time. I find the only
way to do it is to set myself a (3) …………………………, you know, give myself something
to aim for. For me, that’s the only thing that helps with the learning process. It doesn’t
have to be a big thing, it might just be rewarding myself with a night out if I’m successful
in a (4) …………………………. I know I’ll reap the rewards one day, when I’m qualified. My
aim is to be qualified by the time I’m 25.
Speaker 2: I’m working at the moment but I don’t like my job so I’ve decided to further
my career by taking a (5) ………………………… at night. I’m finding it a struggle completing
my (6) …………………………. I’m lucky, though, because I get on really well with some of
the other students and we get together once a week to help each
other (7) ………………………… and study for our exams. Some people might find it
distracting but for me it helps make the course more (8) ………………………… and so more
enjoyable. It’s a pretty (9) ………………………… subject and they’re teaching us in a pretty
boring way, but I really feel like I’m broadening my knowledge of computers.
Track 2
Teacher: Can you tell me about your early education?
Student: Well, I went to kindergarten from the age of four and I remember that I didn’t
enjoy it very much at all. Primary school was a little better, especially because my mum
was a teacher in the school. She taught in the (1) ………………………… part of the school
and she was actually my teacher in first grade but when I went up to the senior school I
didn’t see very much of her. After that I was lucky enough to receive
a (2) ………………………… to go to a very good high school.
My parents couldn’t have afforded to send me to a private school so it was a really great
opportunity for me. It was a (3) ……………………….. so there were no boys. I’m glad I didn’t
go to a 4) ………………………… because I think there are fewer distractions so everyone
can just concentrate on their studies.
Track 3
So you have graduated from university and decided to continue studying towards a
Master’s or PhD. At some stage during the next few years will need to consider
your (1) …………………………. One of the greatest difficulties faced by postgraduate
students is choosing a topic to base their dissertation on. Writing a thesis can be
very (2) …………………………, but the task is much more straightforward if the topic you
select is (3) ………………………… for you. So, what can you do to solve this problem? Well
there are several things to keep in mind. Firstly you need to do
your (4) …………………………. so that you are very familiar with all the current literature.
On top of this, you also need to be sure that you have a broad knowledge of your area of
specialisation. If you do this, it will help you with the next important point in choosing a
good subject for your research, which is to ascertain what is relevant in your research
area. This will be crucial in helping you to (5) …………………………. your choices down.
From the very beginning, it really is vital to set clear limits and to have a very fixed plan in
terms of the scope of your research. It can be even more helpful to analyse existing
research and ask yourself if there are any controversies. Perhaps there is a theory that you
may want to challenge and this could be the focus of your study. A further and very
important factor to take into account is your own (6) …………………………. If these are
limited then you need to avoid choosing a study that will involve costly equipment or
surveys. However, if this is the case, you needn’t dispair or abandon your ideas altogether,
instead make enquiries into funding from external agencies such as
your (7) …………………………. You may even find that local industries are willing to support
your research by providing a (8) …………………………. . It’s always worth looking around to
see just what is possible. And finally, be sure to make good use of
your (9) …………………………., especially when it comes to making sure that your findings
are accurate.
