PROCEDURE FOR PACKING, STORAGE, PRESERVATION, HANDLING &

DELIVERY OF PIPE, FLANGES & FITTINGS

1.0 SCOPE
This Procedure details the minimum requirements for the preservation, Packing, Marking and
documentation of Pipes, Fittings, & Flanges for OMTFI and is designed to protect such
products against the hazards associated with the handling, transportation, in transit or in
storage at workshop.

2.0 Purpose:
To provide guidelines of Packing for protection of the items against corrosion, Physical
damage or any effect which would lower the quality or cause the items to deteriorate during
the time they are handled, stored and Preserved.

3.0 Responsibility:

Manager QA / QC for overall control

All the concerned personnel for execution.

4.0 PROCEDURE

Incoming Materials & Job Work Items – Receipt


4.1 Based on Customer Delivery Schedules, Shop In-Charge & Administration Officer verifies the
stock status monthly. The stock is verified against Store Ledger, which is used as prior
information on deciding procurement schedule & production planning.
4.2 At the time of receipt of any material, Documents (Delivery Challan, Invoice) are checked for
adequacy and are verified before receiving the materials. After the receipt of incoming
material delivery documents are checked for supplier Test Certificate & Pre Dispatch
Inspection Report. If those are not available the same is intimated to supplier.
4.3 Materials are unloaded and acknowledgement of receipt is given. After conformation Shop
In-Charge enters the details in Raw Material Purchasing & Inspection Register.
4.4 Shop In-Charge identifies the material as “UNDER INSPECTION”. Shop In-Charge verifies the
Quality & Quantity of received material.
4.5 Quality Inspector to carry out required inspection for approval of materials. Incoming
materials are inspected as per Procedure for Monitoring and Measurement of Product.

Handling & Storage of Materials – Incoming Material.


4.6 Adequate facilities such as wooden pallets are provided for handling of Materials. Safety
instructions are displayed at relevant locations to ensure adherence to safety.
4.7 Incoming Materials are identified and labeled as per their status for e.g. under inspection or
Inspected.

Issue of Incoming Materials


4.8 Based on the Production Planning, the Shop In-Charge consumes the material as per the
required quantity for production. It is considered as after receipt all the material is issued to
Production.
4.9 It is ensured that the materials in stores are not damaged or lost. The physical stock is
verified/ checked at the end of each month for adequacy and appropriate information, as
also for the physical condition. The damaged items are removed and disposed.

In process Material
4.10 In process material are stored using tags and labels by Shop In-Charge using appropriate
identification.
4.11 In process material is inspected as per Procedure for Monitoring and Measurement of
Product. Materials are properly identified as per Procedure for Product Identification.
Final Product
4.12 Finished components, which are inspected for compliance to specifications, are stored with
proper identification & kept ready for dispatch. Finished components are stored in Bins, and
are adequately stocked.
4.13 Store In-charge updates of details of material dispatch.

Preservation of Materials in Stores


4.14 It is ensured that materials are properly preserved and provisions are made for cleaning,
prevention and removal of foreign objects, special handling for sensitive products, marking
and labeling including safety warnings, shelf life control and stock rotation and special
handling for hazardous material.

5. General Requirements for Packaging


5.1. Corrosion Protection
Store In charge ensure the products are suitably protected and packaged to prevent
corrosion during handling, transport and storage.

5.2. Safety
Store In charge ensure all products are packed to avoid personal injury and damage to
equipment and property.
5.3. Inhibitor
All exposed bright metal surfaces treated with suitable rust inhibitor prior to packing.

5.4. Optimization
Store In charge optimize the size, weight and complexity of the packaging and packaging
materials to minimize the cost of transport, handling, storage and site removal disposal of
packaging materials.
 The design of packages take into consideration the method of lifting and where slings are to
be utilized, particularly those weighing in excess of 300 kg; the top edge ensure to be
sufficiently reinforced to withstand the loads that will be applied during lifting.
 We designing protection packaging for equipment has been provided for the inclusion of
lifting lugs and sling points ensuring they are always accessible and available for lifting and
transport purposes. All lifting lug eyebolt holes have been blanked off to stop entry of water
and dust
 Lifting points will be clearly marked and slinging will be performed on specific location.
(Example: lifting lugs)
 For the purpose of lifting by forklift truck, packages, where applicable, always fitted with skids
having a skid height of no less than 100 mm high and 150 mm wide.

5.5. Special Care
Special care always be taken to prevent brinelling of bearings. Bearings susceptible to
brinelling be relieved of load during transport by the use of false bearings to support the
load.
3.6. The items will be adequately blocked and strapped to prevent damage during transit,
handling and storage.

6. Packaging of Pipes, Fittings & flanges

6.1. Cleaning
All surfaces of products properly cleaned and free from rust, scale, metal chip, oil and any other
harmful defects.
6.2. Rust Prevention (Coating)

All exterior and interior surfaces of Pipes, fittings & Flanges coated as follows:
1. Carbon & alloy steel butt-welding fitting: Anti corrosive preservation coat or temporary
primer or water proof varnish
2. Carbon & alloy steel forging: Anti-corrosive coat or temporary primer
3. Austenitic stainless steel Pipes, fitting & flanges need not be coated

6.3 Wooden box packing

 Carton box placed in wooden box

 Inside with waterproof vinyl placed in wooden box


 Elbow - Pallet with rubber protection bevel end
 Wooden boxes, open crates and pallets have enough strength due to the package weight
and will not damage during transportation and storage.

7. Marking
7.1. To maintain proper identification and instructions, items shall be marked to preserve
identity in accordance with Customer’s marking requirement

7.2. Steel pipe fittings & Flanges Dispatch by the test and inspection will be marked with the
manufacture's name or trademark, material designation, rating designation, nominal wall
thickness or schedule, size and heat number in accordance with Customer’s marking
requirement
7.3. The fitting shall be marked by following method which will not result in any harmful
Contamination or sharp discontinuities. -Carbon & Alloy Steel: Low stress die-stamping or
dot-die stamping. -Stainless steel: Electro-Etching
74. Shipping Mark all packages will have clear shipping mark stenciled. Markings of small
shipping boxes and units will be in proportion to their size.
7.5. Packing list should be provided in waterproof cover attached to the package.
7.6. Care marks will be stenciled in waterproof red ink. (Refer to attachment

8. Delivery:
8.1 Administration Officer prepares Challan cum Invoice. Finished components are dispatched only
after Authorized person duly signs invoices.
8.2Final Product duly packed is dispatched to the customer along with Challan Cum Invoice. The
Label bearing the product details, packing quantity & customers PO. etc is attached with final
product
