GRADE-VI Concept: Measurement and Motion
INTEXT QUESTIONS

Short answer type questions:

1. Name two units commonly used to measure your height? Which of the two units is more
appropriate to measure your height and why?
Feet and metre are the two commonly used units to measure height.
Feet is the British system of representation of distance whereas metre is the standard unit.
Metre is better than feet because it can easily be converted into other units.
2. If they are in motion identify the type of motion in each case.
a. Fan - rotatory motion
b. Pendulum of a clock - oscillatory motion.
c. Airplane - rectilinear motion
d. Metro train - rectilinear motion
e. String of a guitar- vibratory motion.
3. What is a physical quantity? Name all the basic physical quantities.
Physical quantities are the quantities of the material or a system that can be quantified by
measuring them. They can be expressed as the combination of a numeric value and a unit.
There are seven basic physical quantities- length, mass, temperature, time, electric current,
luminous intensity and amount of substance.
4. What is the 'relevance of estimation'? Explain with an example.
It is not always necessary to make accurate measurements. In some cases, such as the
distance between your house to the park of your society, the distance cannot be measured in
millimetre or micrometre. Similarly, while cooking a meal or any dish, an approximate
quantity of ingredients is taken.
5. What are standard units? Give one advantage of using standard units.
A standard unit is a globally accepted unit of measurement. It is accurate everywhere in the
world. It is convenient to use by everyone. The SI unit of length, metre (m), is a
standard unit.
Advantage:
The greatest advantage of SI unit is that it has only one unit for each quantity (type of
measurement).
This means that it is never necessary to convert from one unit to another (within the system).
6. Explain the types of motion of the earth.
The Earth revolves around the Sun as well as rotates on its own axis in a fixed interval of
time. Thus, it shows a combination of rotational, circular and periodic motions.
Long answer type questions:
1. What is translational motion? Explain with examples. Write its main types. Compare
them according to their differences and similarities.
It is a type of motion by which all parts of the objects move the same distance in a given
time.
Examples: Vehicles moving on a road and a child sliding on a slider
It is of two types: Rectilinear Motion and Curvilinear Motion.
When the translational motion is in a straight line, it is said to be rectilinear motion.
Example: Vehicles moving on a straight path
When the translational motion is along a curved path, it is said to be curvilinear motion.
Example: Vehicles taking a U-turn
The difference between rectilinear and curvilinear motion.
1. Rectilinear motion
The body is moving in a straight line. Example. A ball falling from the cliff.
2. Curvilinear motion
This is the motion when the body in a curved path. For example, the motion of a vehicle
in a turn.
Similarity of rectilinear motion and curvilinear motion:
Both are the types of translational motion.
2. What readings would you get from each positions of A,B,C? What position of your eye
will give an accurate reading? Why? Discuss the precautions one should take while
measuring the length with the help of a ruler.

Position A = 3.4
Position B = 3.2
Position C = 3
Position B
When taking readings from any scales for measuring the length of any object. The
observer must look perpendicular to the scale. If the observer looks at an angle then the
reading will be incorrect.
Two precautions are:
1. Place the scale in contact with the object along its length.
2. Most important, eye should be correctly positioned above the point to be measured to
make a correct measurement.
3. Compare the motion of an automobiles with that of a ceiling fan.
Motion of car is in rectilinear motion.
It is not on a fixed path and can move anywhere.
It may have uniform motion or non-uniform motion depending upon its speed and
distance with respect to equal time intervals.
Motion of a ceiling fan is circular motion.
It is moving circularly on a fixed Path.
It will cover equal distance with equal speed in equal intervals of time that is uniform
motion.
4. Anushka has been given an elastic measuring tape while Anvi has been given normal
measuring tape. Who will be able to measure the length and width of a garden with
accuracy? Explain.
Anvi will be able to measure the garden accurately. An elastic measuring tape can be
stretched and it does not have a fixed measurement so its markings will get displaced. But,
normal measuring tape will give the correct measurement as it cannot be stretched.

EXTRA QUESTIONS

1.Why do we use light-years instead of kilometers to measure distance?

Using light years to measure distances is advantageous to astronomers because if they used
miles or kilometers, the distances would be so large that they would become impractical.
A light year can also be used to determine the age of a star or other space object.
2. Enumerate the uses of Vernier calliper?
A vernier calliper is defined as a measuring device that is used for the measurement of linear
dimensions. It is also used for the measurement of diameters of round objects with the help of
the measuring jaws.
3. Write a short note on screw gauge.
The screw gauge is an instrument used for measuring accurately the diameter of a thin wire
or the thickness of a sheet of metal accurately. It consists of a U-shaped frame fitted with a
screwed spindle which is attached to a thimble. Parallel to the axis of the thimble, a scale
graduated in mm is engraved.
4. How can we measure the length of a curved line?
We can use a thread to measure the length of a curved line.
Steps to measure the length of a curved line
i. Put a knot on the thread near one of its ends and place this knot on the one of its ends.
ii. Now, holding the thread at one end with one hand, place the thread along the curved line,
keeping it taut using your fingers and thumb.
iii. Now make a mark on the thread where it reaches the other end.
iv. Finally, place the thread along a metre scale and measure the length between the knot
and the marked point. This gives the length of the curved line.
5. A broken ruler is used to measure length. How?
A broken ruler can be used to measure length by the following steps -
• Take the broken ruler and measure the length with the available readings of the scale.
• Note down the two readings which you get from the two ends of the taken object.
• Now, subtract the greater reading with the minor reading to get the actual length of
the object.
- Suppose the,
Lower reading = 1 cm
Higher reading = 5 cm
So, the actual length = (5-1) = 4 cm.
