MODIFICATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR UPGDRADING TO SOFTWARE VERSION 3.30

Overview
To perform the software field upgrade procedure, software must be downloaded from the Dealer
Resource Center of the Garmin website (https://dealers.garmin.com), and the proper wiring connections
must be made to a PC. The GTX 3000 can be configured using a PC running the GTX Install Tool which
communicates with the unit via RS-232. Perform the following steps in this section to update the system
software.

GTX 3000/PC Wiring Connections

The connections shown in Figure 1 (out of aircraft) or Figure 2 (in aircraft) must be made to provide power
to the unit and a data connection to the PC. Either method is acceptable to perform the system software
update.

CAUTION
Transmitting without an antenna or 50 ohm load attached to both antenna ports may damage
the transmitter. Never connect power to the unit with one or both antenna ports unconnected. An
antenna or a 50 ohm, 5-watt load must be connected to both antenna ports any time the unit is
powered on. This is required because the GTX 3000 transmits Mode S acquisition squitter replies
about once per second whether interrogations are received or not.

Figure 1 Software Update Connection (out of aircraft)

To allow the unit to be configured while installed in the aircraft, an optional breakout harness and
connector may be installed in the aircraft as shown in Figure 2. Since the breakout harness is part of the
aircraft’s harness, shielded cable and proper shield terminations are required. The breakout harness must
be no longer than 1 meter.

Downloading the GTX System Software
GTX 3000 software v3.30 is available for field update as part number 006-A0265-02. This part
contains a self-extracting archive (.exe) file that contains the system software. The Field Update can
be downloaded from the Garmin website (https://dealers.garmin.com).

Downloading and Installing the GTX Install Tool

The GTX Install Tool is available for download from the Garmin website (https://dealers.garmin.com)
as part number 006-A0271-23 (4.03) (or later version). The GTX 3000 Installation Tool Guide is
available from the Garmin website as part number 190-00926-30. It is also available from the Help-
>View Help menu of the GTX Install Tool. Perform the following steps to prepare for using the tool:
1. Install the GTX Install Tool on a PC or laptop per the Installation Procedure in the GTX 3000
Installation Tool Guide
2. Connect the GTX 3000 to the PC or laptop per the preceding section ‘GTX 3000/PC Wiring
Connections’
3. Apply power to the GTX 3000
4. Proceed to the instructions in the following section ‘Using the GTX Install Tool’.

Using the GTX Install Tool

The GTX Install Tool provides a means to load software to the GTX 3000 and configure the GTX 3000
using a PC. With the RS-232 harness connected between the unit and the PC, apply power to the
GTX 3000 and open the install tool. The following window will appear.

Figure 3 GTX Install Tool

NOTE
If the GTX 3000 is connected to any other devices via RS-232/RS-422 they must be powered off
prior to loading GTX 3000 System software.

Press “Load Software” to bring up the software upload page. The tool will scan the available serial
ports on the PC and attempt to connect to the unit as shows in Figure 4.

Once a connection to the unit is established, the Software Upload page will appear as shown in
Figure 5. In the lower-left corner of the Software Upload page, verify that the GTX is connected. If
the tool was unable to connect to the unit, refer to Troubleshooting Connection Problems in the
GTX 3000 Installation Tool Guide.

Software Upload Page
GTX 3000 software upload is initiated via the GTX Install Tool Software Upload page (see Figure 5).
There are three different images which run on the GTX 3000: System, Boot Block, and FPGA. The
Boot Block software supports software and FPGA image loading. The FPGA image configures the
internal FPGA to meet applicable TSOs. The System software is the primary LRU software image that
meets applicable TSOs.
To upload version 3.30 System software, click on the corresponding Upload Code button and select
006-B0912-16_0A.bin. When the file is selected, the upload will begin automatically and a progress
dialog box will appear (see Figure 6). When the upload is complete, a dialog box will appear showing
status of the upload and the unit will automatically be placed into Normal mode. Click the OK button.
Verify the System software part number and version are correct on the Software Upload page.

Transponder” which will automatically connect to the unit and display configuration and diagnostic
pages. Select the Product Data page (see Figure 7) and verify the system software part number and
version are correct.

New configuration items have been added in system software 3.30. Therefore, after initially loading
version 3.30, the unit will report a Non-Volatile Memory failure and a Configuration Module Invalid
warning, if a configuration module is present. Figure 8 illustrates these indications on the GTX Install
Tool Status page. To clear the Non-Volatile Memory failure, reset the unit by cycling power or by
selecting Normal Mode and pressing Set at the bottom of the install tool. This will initialize the new
configuration items to their default settings in non-volatile memory. Next, the configuration module
invalid warning can be cleared by selecting GTX->Configuration->Push to configuration module (see
Figure 9) and then performing a unit reset while the unit is installed in the aircraft. This will perform a
one-time write of the unit’s configuration data to the configuration module.

NOTE
The push to configuration module request is cached on the GTX and executed on the next
unit reset or power up. This allows the request to be issued while the unit is removed
from the aircraft and executed after the unit is re-installed.

Please refer to the GTX 3000 Installation Manual to review configuration items that were added in
system software v3.30. Configure new items as needed for your installation per the installation manual.

TESTING PROCEDURE

The unit’s built-in Self-Test and successful completion of the Post Installation Check Out Procedure in the
aircraft as outlined in the GTX 3000 Installation Manual shall be adequate to identify any errors in this
modification.
