Question 1

For x(t ) indicated in the below figure, sketch the following signals:

1. x(−t )

2. x(t + 2)

3. x(2t + 2)

4. x(1 − 3t )

Question 2

A discrete-time signal x[n] indicated in the below figure, sketch the following:

1. x[n − 2]

2. x[4 − n]

3. x[2n]

Question 3

Sketch each of the following signals.

1. x[n] = δ[n] + δ[n − 3]

2. x[n] = u[n] − u[n − 5]

3. x[n] = δ[n] + 12 δ[n − 1] + ( 12 )2 δ[n − 2] + ( 12 )3 δ[n − 3]

4. x(t ) = u(t + 3) − u(t − 3)

5. x(t ) = δ(t + 2)

6. x(t ) = e −t u(t )

Question 4

The table contains the input-output relations for several continuous-time and discrete-
time systems, where x(t ) or x[n] is the input. Indicate whether the property along the top
row applies to each system by answering yes or no in the appropriate boxes. Do not mark
the X boxes.

Signals and Systems (EE331) – Homework #1 3

Answer 1.

1. This is a time reversal.

2. This is a shift in time.

3. A scaling by a factor of 2 occurs as well as a time shift.

4. All three effects are combined in this linear scaling.

Signals and Systems (EE331) – Homework #1 4

Answer 2.

1. This is a shift to the right by two units.

2. x[4 − n] = x[−(n − 4)], so we flip about the n = 0 axis and then shift to the right by 4.

3. x[2n] generates a new signal with x[n] for even values of n.

Answer 5.

1. u(t + 1) − u(t − 2) :

Hence, x(1 − t )[u(t + 1) − u(t − 2)] :

2. u(t + 1) − u(2 − 3t ) :

Hence, x(1 − t )[u(t + 1) − u(2 − 3t )] :
