Unit 1: Integers

Absolute Value and Integer Addition

Numbers greater than zero are called positive integers.

Numbers less than zero are called negative integers

Negative integers are the opposite of positive integers.

Example: Find the opposite of the following:

a) 2 = 2
b) −3 =
3
c) 0 = O

You can model integers using a number line. The absolute value of an integer is its distance from 0 on a
number line.

Example: Model each of the following integers using arrows.

Then describe their absolute value using words.

a) Model the integer 5 on the number line.

b) Model the integer −5 on the number line.

c) Model the integer −10 and 5 on the number line. Which integer has the greater absolute value?

The symbol for absolute value is |x| where x represents the integer. Absolute values are never negative.

Addition of Integers

Addition of integers can be modeled using counters and number lines.

Let the green (+) counters represent positive integers.

Let the red (-) counters represent negative integers.

Directions: Model each addition sentence on the number line provided.

Now that we know the rules for adding integers with the same signs and integers with
different signs we can use the graphic organizer below to help remember these rules!
