Tutorial 7: Torsion and Complex Stress and Strain

6 and 13 May 2015
See the recommended reading list in course outline for the sources of the problems.

culate the value of the modulus of rigidity. Cal-
culate also the maximum power which could be
transmitted by the shaft at 2 000 rev/min if the
maximum allowable shearing stress is 65 MPa.
2. The aluminum rod AB (G = 27 GPa) is bonded
to the brass rod BD (G = 39 GPa). Knowing that
portion CD of the brass rod is hollow and has an
inner diameter of 40 mm, determine the angle of
twist at A.

4. A circular shaft tapers from a radius 2r to r and

has an axial hole of constant radius R throughout
its length, L. Determine the angle of twist due to
constant torque T in terms of T , L, G, R and r.

5. The shaft ABC shown in the figure is driven by a

motor that delivers 300 kW at a rotational speed
of 32 Hz. The gears at B and C take out 120
and 180 kW, respectively. The lengths of the two
parts of the shaft are L1 = 1.5 m and L2 = 0.9 m.
Determine the required diameter d of the shaft if

35 mm, an inside diameter of 25 mm, and a shear
modulus of G1 = 45 GPa. The solid steel core has
a diameter of 25 mm and a shear modulus of G2
= 80 GPa. The allowable shear stress of sleeve
(1) is 180 MPa, and the allowable shear stress of
core (2) is 150 MPa. Determine (a) the allowable
torque T that can be applied to the composite
shaft. (b) the corresponding torques produced in
