Unit 1 Review: Quadratics

Topics:
• Number of zeros from standard form and vertex form
• Distinguish from the factored, vertex and standard forms of quadratic functions
• Be able to move from one form to another
• Write an equation into standard form given a) two roots (including irrational) and a point or b) the
vertex and a point or c) the y-intercept and two other points
• Determine the max. or min. value of a quadratic function by factoring, partial factoring and
completing the square
• Solving quadratic equations from factored form, vertex form and standard form
• Applications to max/min : ex. height problems, revenue problems
• Linear-Quadratic systems – intersection of lines and parabolas.
• Family of quadratics – similarities & differences

Questions to work on from the text:

Pg. 86 #13 – 20, pg. 155 #10 – 30 (not 18), pg. 693 #23 b, g

Supplementary problems:
−1 2
1. Find the vertex of the parabola defined by y = x + 4x + 3
2
2. Factor
a) x 2 + 11x + 30 b) 10 x 2 − 22 x + 4 c) 49 x 2 − 16

3. Solve for x, express your answers as both exact answers and rounded to the nearest hundredth:
a) 0 = −5(x − 3) 2 + 10 b) 0 = ( x − 4)(3 x − 8) c) 7 = ( x − 4)(3 x − 8) d) x 2 + 4 x − 1 = 0

4. Determine the equation of the quadratic function with zeros ± 4 3 and passing through the point (–2, –22).

5. Solve the system: y = 4(x − 2)(x + 5) and y = −4 x + 44

6. Thinking: Determine the equations of the lines with slope –5 that intersect f (x) = −7x 2 − 5x + 4 once,
twice and never.

7. A model rocket is shot into the air from the roof of a building. Its height, h, above the ground, measured
in metres, can be modelled by the equation h = −5t 2 + 35t + 5 , where t is the time elapsed since liftoff in
seconds.
a) Determine the greatest height reached by the rocket.
b) How long is the rocket in flight?
c) Determine the height of the building
d) When is the height of the rocket 61.25 m?

8. Rahj owns a hardware store. For every increase of 10¢ in the price of a package of batteries, he estimates
that sales decrease by 10 packages per day. The store normally sells 700 packages of batteries per day, at
$5.00 per package.
a) Determine an equation for the revenue.
b) What is the maximum daily revenue that Rahj can expect from battery sales?
c) How many packages of batteries are sold when the revenue is at a maximum?
