How to Start a Basic Spreadsheet in Excel

To start a basic spreadsheet in Excel, open the program and select a new, blank
workbook. In the blank workbook, each grid consists of rows and columns where you
can input data. Start by entering your data in individual cells. For example, place
headings in the first row to label each column (like "Name," "Date," or "Sales"). You
can then fill the cells below with relevant data. To adjust the layout, you can format
the cells, resize columns, and even apply color to headings for better visibility. Once
you’ve entered the data, remember to save your file.

Using Excel for Data Sorting

Excel’s data sorting feature helps organize data easily. To sort data, select the range of
cells you want to sort, then go to the “Data” tab and choose “Sort.” You can sort in
ascending or descending order based on any column, like sorting names alphabetically
or numbers from smallest to largest. For more complex sorting, Excel allows sorting
by multiple criteria. For example, you can first sort by “Date” and then by “Name”
within each date. This helps you manage and analyze data more effectively.
