MEL7140: Mechanical Vibrations

Assignment 2

1. An experiment is run to determine the kinetic coefficient of friction between a block and
a surface. The block is attached to a spring and displaced 160 mm from equilibrium. It is
observed that the period of motion is 0.5 s and that the amplitude decreases by 10 mm on
successive cycles. Determine the coefficient of friction and how many cycles of motion the
block executes before motion ceases.
2. For what value of m will resonance occur for the system of Fig. below?

3. A 45-kg machine is placed at the end of a 1.6-m cantilever beam of elastic modulus of
200x109 N/m2 and cross-sectional moment of inertia 1.6 x 10-5 m4. As it operates, the
machine produces a hannonic force of magnitude 125 N. At what operating speeds will the
machine's steady-state amplitude be less than 0.2 mm?
4. A 1l0-kg machine is mounted on an elastic foundation of stiffness 2 x 106 N/m. When
operating at 150 rad/s, the machine is subject a harmonic force of magnitude 1500 N. The
steady-state amplitude of the machine is measured as 1.9 mm. What is the damping ratio
of the foundation?
5. The machine of mass m, of Fig. below, is mounted on an elastic foundation modeled as a
spring of stiffness k in parallel with a viscous damper of damping coefficient c. The
machine has an unbalanced component rotating at a constant speed w. The unbalance can
be represented by a particle of mass mo, a distance e from the axis of rotation. Derive the
differential equation governing the machine's displacement, and determine its steady-state
amplitude.

6. A simplified model of a vehicle suspension system is shown in Fig. A . The body of a 500-
kg vehicle is connected to the wheels through a suspension system that is modeled as a
spring of stiffness 4 x 105 N /m in parallel with a viscous damper of damping coefficient
3000 N-s/m. The wheels are assumed to be rigid and follow the road contour. The contour
of the road traversed by the vehicle is shown in Fig B. If the vehicle travels at a constant
speed of 52 m/s, what is the acceleration amplitude of the vehicle?
A B

7. The base of a spring-mass-damper system is subjected to the periodic displacement shown in

Fig. below. Determine the response of the mass using the principle of superposition.

8. The center of gravity of a 12-kg rotor is 1.2 cm from its geometric center. The rotor is
mounted on a shaft and spring-loaded bearings of stiffness 1.4 x 105N/ m. What is the
amplitude of whirling when the rotor operates at 1500 r/min?
9. A slender shaft supported on two bearings at its ends carries a disc with an eccentricity e
from the axis of rotation. The critical speed of the shaft is N. Calculate the critical speed of
the shaft, If the disc is replaced by a second one of same weight but mounted with an
eccentricity 2e.
