For most sample materials, the combination of the vibrating feeder VIBRI and the
inlet funnel mounted on the dispersing line is sufficient to generate a dispersed aer-
osol jet. The rotating table with wiper and compacting roller as well as a brush
disperser are intended for particularly fine or adhesive products. The ASPIROS mi-
cro-dosing system is used for the smallest sample quantities from less than 1 mg up
to one gramme.
An extraction unit is required to operate the RODOS in order to collect the sample
and ensure a laminar flow in the measuring zone of HELOS. RODOS is controlled
via a control software or manually via a control panel.
The device is not intrinsically safe when using powders that are hazardous to health
or if the powder forms a flammable or explosive mixture with the compressed gas.
It must therefore only be used if additional measures are taken by the operator at
the installation site to enable the device to be operated safely and in accordance
with its intended use.
RODOS with HELOS is designed as a movable device with a mains plug for indoor
use. The device is intended for use in industrial or university laboratories. Private
use is excluded.
The operating instructions provided do not release the operator from the obligation
to develop and apply, or have applied, his own health and/or safety rules based on
the requirements of the overall system, as well as safety-related work procedures,
and to monitor compliance with these

6 Operation
6.1 Important notes
All activities described in the section “Operation” assume that you have installed
RODOS and HELOS correctly in accordance with section 5.
Before actual operation, please note the possible dangers that exist or may arise
during operation of RODOS under special circumstances.
WARNING
Risk due to hazardous aerosol!
A non-functional suction or non-installed suction leads to uncon-
trolled escaping of aerosol when starting a measurement.
➢ Before commissioning the device, check the function of the suction
unit
➢ Always observe the safety data sheets of the sample materials used.
➢ Wear suitable personal protective equipment when in contact with
hazardous substances.
WARNING
Risk due to hazardous aerosol!
Feeding of particles larger than the maximum particle size specified in
the specifications can lead to blockages in the dispersing line and thus
to uncontrolled escaping of aerosol at the start of a measurement.
Do not operate the device outside the specifications!
➢ Always observe the safety data sheets of the sample materials used.
➢ Wear suitable personal protective equipment when in contact with
hazardous substances.
All sealing used in this instrument are configured for certain operating
conditions according to their resistance. Ensure yourself of the suitability
of the instrument for your product or additives like solvents! Please con-
tact your local Sympatec distributor if questions remain.

6.3.1 Display
After switching on the HELOS sensor, the following message appears on the dis-
play:
[SYMPATEC]
[RODOS]
[VX.X.X.X]
The third line shows the firmware version of the RODOS.
After a few seconds the RODOS switches to the standby mode and the third line
shows: [ready].
6.4 Feeder
The vibratory feeder VIBRI of the dosing-dispersing-system RODOS has the task
to supply the funnel or rotating table with material. Information about settings and
operation can be found in the VIBRI operating instructions.
The optimal settings for VIBRI must be manually determined for each
application.
See the section 6.5 about finding the parameters.
If you choose the micro dosing system ASPIROS you will neither need the rotating
table set-up nor VIBRI. Small conversions to the set-up are necessary instead. These
are described in the operating instructions of ASPIROS.
The buttons on the control panel allow the user to manually go through the individ-
ual steps of a measurement cycle. At defined points, the user can make the settings
required for a measurement on the disperser and conveyor. The effects of these
settings can be controlled in real time in the sensor control. The settings determined
with this procedure must then be entered in the measurement settings of the sensor
control.
The measurement settings can be saved as templates in the sensor control. Meas-
urements can then be started repeatedly with these settings from the sensor control.
CAUTION
Moving rotating table!
If you reach into the moving rotating table your fingers or hand might
be squeezed.
➢ Do not reach into the moving rotating table.
CAUTION
Risk due to aerosol jet!
If the light- and contact protection cover is removed during operation,
there is a risk of injuring parts of the hand or arm in the open aerosol
jet.
➢ Never remove the protection cover during operation.

Adjust injector:
Set the primary pressure and depression manually using the operating
elements, the display on the operation panel shows:
• Line 1:
Measured value of the set injector primary pressure, e.g. [1.0
bar].
The primary pressure can be adjusted manually using the ad-
justment wheel on top of RODOS.
• Line 2:
Measured value of the depression in mbar (10-3 bar).
The depression can be adjusted using the adjustment wheel of
the injector. The depression should be as high as possible for
a certain primary pressure.
With a set primary pressure, the adjustment wheel on the in-
jector is used to change the length of the mixing zone between
the propellant jet and the particle jet. The length of the mixing
zone influences the depression.
Observe the effects in LIVE-View and adapt the settings:
• check the signals in LIVE-View of sensor control software
• set the found parameters for primary pressure in the DIS-
PERSER scope of sensor control. This entry is valid for any
future measurement, until it is changed. For more information
see the manual or online help of sensor control.
The sensor control can be set to check the primary pressure
prior to the start of a measurement. If the primary pressure is
less than the set value, a warning message is shown. The op-
erator may abort the measurement and adapt the pressure.
NOTICE
The primary pressure is ex works adjusted to 3 bar with the injector pressure max-
imised. The scale of the adjustment wheel is aligned with the number “0” on top
at the mark on the injector housing.
This setting is sufficient for most products to be measured, even at lower pressures,
and usually does not need to be changed.
NOTICE
Next the sample feeding is activated. Depending on the setup the rotating table
starts turning and the VIBRI is activated.
With some VIBRI of older type the VIBRI must be activated manually by pressing
the key.
The sample feed only works correctly if a sufficient amount of material is available
in the funnel.

We recommend to use the protruding aspiration tube as standard take-up. The vi-
bratory feeder transports the product as a surplus into the rotating table. Part of the
product is scraped down with an installed scraper and is compacted by the roller.
The product is sucked into the injector and is dispersed into the dispersing line. The
groove of the rotating table should be free from products after the product take-up.
If this is not the case and the product sticks in the corner of the groove you have to
utilise the brush assembly. Products with high adhesive forces or humidity can-not
be adjusted completely from the groove by the protruding aspiration tube. The for-
cible control of the brush pre-disperser guarantees a improved product feed.
The direct product feeding to the funnel is preferable for well flowing products.
The aim of achieving a constant product feeding for the dispersion can be tested by
the sound during the process of dispersion. The noise development should be
steady. Sputter and cracking noises suggests that no constant product feeding oc-
curs.
6.6.3 Draught
Avoid draught in the measuring zone, when the RODOS-system is operated with
the optical laser diffraction spectrometer HELOS.
This applies in particular to the measuring ranges from R5 (f=500 mm) to R8
(f=5000mm).
6.6.4 Dispersion
The aim of dispersing the particles is to separate agglomerated particles in order to
analyse the separated particles with the laser diffraction spectrometer HELOS and
to record the particle size distribution. Single particles are not be damaged or
crushed during dry dispersing.
The dispersion line is subject to abrasion. The abrasion depends on the products
characteristics.
Products with great hardness, as for example cement or abrasives, cause a higher
abrasion to the dispersing line. The abrasion is approximately proportional to the
transferred mass and to the root of the injector primary pressure, (the increase of
the primary pressure from 1.5 to 3.0bar decreases the durability of the line by a
factor of 1.4). When the dispersion allows, the dispersing line should be driven with
the lowest primary pressure as possible. We suggest an injector primary pressure of
1.0 bar for standard applications.
WARNING
Risk due to hazardous substances!
Danger to health if hazardous, substances are touched, swallowed or
inhaled.
➢ Always observe the safety data sheets of the sample materials used.
➢ Wear suitable hand protection or other required personal protective
equipment when in contact with hazardous substances.
➢ Avoid ignition sources around RODOS.
CAUTION
Sharp-edged rotating table!
While installing the injector adapter there is a risk of squeezing or cut-
ting your fingers at the rotating table.
➢ Do not touch the sharp edge of the rotating table.
➢ Wear protective gloves.
NOTICE
The painted surfaces of the equipment are limited solvent resistant. Please ask
your local Sympatec partner regarding to the suitability of the equipment to clean-
ing agents.
CAUTION
Components might become fast projectiles by compressed air!
Changing the dispersing line without disconnecting the pressure supply
might cause injuries by components becoming fast projectiles due to
the compressed air.
➢ Disconnect the pressure supply before start working on the device.
Figure 57
The compressed air must be dry and free of lubricants. If the quality of the com-
pressed air is not sufficient, an additional separator or filter should be installed.
Figure 58 shows the corroded outside nozzle of the injector. The reason for such a
strong corrosion of the material is an immense fraction of humidity in the com-
pressed air network which cannot be separated by the filters.
Figure 58
7.2.2 Cleaning the compressed air measuring tube
The silicone tube between injector and frit should be regularly checked and cleaned.
The frit should be checked and blown out with compressed air if it is contaminated
by dirt.
Step 1:
Loosen the two knurled screws
and remove the cover.
Step 2:
The entire brush is now visible and
can be visually inspected.
If contamination is visible, you can
continue with the next steps.
Step 3:
Use the brush tool to loosen the
brush from the motor shaft.
To do this, hold the motor shaft on
the other side with a slotted screw-
driver so that it does not rotate.
Step 4:
Continue turning the brush tool
until the brush is completely free
from the shaft.
Step 5:
The brush can now be replaced or
cleaned.
Step 6:
Use the brush tool to screw the
brush back onto the shaft.
To fix it on the motor shaft, it must
be held in place again with a slot-
ted screwdriver.
Step 7:
Place the cover back on the open-
ing and secure it with the two
knurled screws.
The brush holder can now be rein-
stalled (section 5.4.2).
8 Maintenance
8.1 Maintenance Intervals
RODOS contains parts that are subject to aging or wear, such as seals, seals or
springs. The parts should be regularly checked or changed depending on their age,
type and intensity of use.
➢ Wear suitable personal protective equipment when in contact with
hazardous substances.
➢ Wear suitable hand protection or other required personal protective
equipment when in contact with hazardous substances.
➢ Avoid ignition sources around RODOS.
CAUTION
Electrical hazard due to damaged cables or connections!
Damaged cables or connections can cause injury to the user or other
persons.
➢ Regularly check the cables and connections for possible damage
before using the devices.
➢ Do not use damaged cables under any circumstances, but have them
replaced immediately.
➢ Shut down devices with damaged cables or connections immedi-
ately and contact your local Sympatec representee.
➢ Do not attempt to repair at your own risk.

CAUTION
Components might become fast projectiles by compressed air!
Changing the dispersing line without disconnecting the pressure supply
might cause injuries by components becoming fast projectiles due to
the compressed air.
➢ Disconnect the pressure supply before start working on the device.
The dispersing line must not be dismantled, for its components are aligned
very carefully with special equipment. If the line is dismantled and rebuild
manually, this may lead to deviations in the measurement results, due to
changed dispersing conditions..
If you use the brush assembly and you want to measure a different product,
we strongly recommend to clean the brush in order to prevent any cross-
contamination.
The volume-hardened dispersing line is a wear part. The abrasion depends on the
product.
The abrasion of the dispersion line becomes obvious through changes in the meas-
ured particle size distribution. If the deviations produced with the same sampling
material cannot be neglected any longer, the dispersion line must be replaced. Used
dispersing lines are taken back and recycled. The abrasion on the dispersing line
can normally not be recognized by visual check. If the injector is separated from
the dispersing line (three cap screws), three parts can be inspected for wear. These
are the inner nozzle (see Figure 59) and the outer nozzle (see, Figure 60 left) of the
injector as well as the acceleration line (see, Figure 60 right).
Figure 59 Figure 60
If the inner nozzle is fringed, the outer nozzle or the first part of the dispersing
line expanded, the dispersing line must be exchanged.
CAUTION
Sharp-edged rotating table!
While installing the injector adapter there is a risk of squeezing or cut-
ting your fingers at the rotating table.
➢ Do not touch the sharp edge of the rotating table.
➢ Wear protective gloves.
9.1 Decommissioning
Decommissioning consists of two important steps, which you must carry out for a
ready-to-use device:
• Cleaning (see section 7)
• Uninstall (see section 5.7)
