Introduction
1. Makeup and Use of This Manual
This manual provides procedures for troubleshooting and repair of the UNS-1Csp Flight
Management System.
This manual applies to various types of the UNS-1Csp in two functional groups. These
groups are the Flight Management System (FMS) and Multi-Mission Management System
(MMMS). Specific types are shown in the following table:

The style of the manual is consistent with the requirements of ATA Specification 100.
2. Abbreviations and Terminology
This manual contains no abbreviations or terms that have varying interpretations throughout
the industry.
UASC is the acronym for Universal Avionics Systems Corporation and is used in tables and
the parts list to indicate Universal Avionics parts and materials.
The X’s contained in part numbers, throughout this manual, are used to define variables.
The term CCA is used when referring to a Circuit Card Assembly.
MMMS and FMS are used interchangeably when referring to a UNS-1Csp system possessing
SCN 70X.X software. Only FMS is used when referring to a UNS-1Csp system possessing
SCN 60X.X software.
Computer programs frequently require using keys in combination. In this manual, for
example, “Alt+1” means to hold down the “Alt” key while pressing the “1” key. An
exception to this style is found in illustrations of certain PC displays which use “Alt-1”
instead of “Alt+1”.

This manual contains maintenance procedures for parts and assemblies sensitive to damage
by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). It also contains specific information on how damage can
occur to electronic parts, assemblies and equipment by ESD and the measures to be taken to
protect against such damage.
Paragraphs including specifically identified processes/steps that come under the ESD
sensitive criteria are marked with the symbol (ESDS). The symbol is located between
paragraph number and title or between the specifically identified process/step number and
text.
A. Techniques for Handling Electrostatic Discharge Sensitive (ESDS) Equipment
The following guidelines assure proper handling of ESDS assemblies during
disassembly, assembly, test set up, and storage.
(1) Perform all procedures in an ESD safe environment that includes ESD table
mats, ESD flooring or floor mats, and ESD safe workstation.
CAUTION: DO NOT PUT ON OR REMOVE A SMOCK IN THE AREA
WHERE UNPACKED ESDS ASSEMBLIES ARE PRESENT.
THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO ESDS COMPONENTS.
CAUTION: DO NOT WEAR SMOCKS, SHOES, GLOVES OR FINGER
COTS MADE OF PLASTIC, RUBBER, OR NYLON. THIS CAN
CAUSE DAMAGE TO ESDS COMPONENTS.
(2) ESD safe apparel:
• ESD smock
• ESD wrist strap
• ESD heel strap or other ESD safe footwear (in case of mobility), if
required
(3) Ground tools and other objects before using them with any component. Avoid
contact between ESDS components and other objects.
CAUTION: DIELECTRIC STRENGTH OR INSULATION RESISTANCE
TESTS WILL DAMAGE A UNIT CONTAINING ESDS
ASSEMBLIES.

(4) Do not perform dielectric strength or insulation resistance tests on a unit
containing ESDS assemblies.
(5) Do not touch assembly contacts with bare hands. Perspiration may cause
corrosion and lead to noisy or faulty operation.
(6) Observe the following procedures when replacing a CCA containing ESDS
components:
(a) Remove power from the unit.
(b) When removing or installing a CCA, grasp it by the edges only. Do
not touch any circuit paths, components or component leads.
(c) Place removed CCAs in an ESD protective container or an ESD
shielding bag when not being used, tested, or serviced.
(7) To prevent accidental damage and the entry of dust and dirt, store the unit in a
temperature and humidity controlled area. Install conductive covers as
necessary. Unit can also be stored in an ESD protective container or an ESD
shielding bag.
6. Warnings, Cautions and Notes
A. Definitions
WARNING: A PROCEDURE, CONDITION, STATEMENT, ETC., WHICH
IF NOT STRICTLY MONITORED, COULD CAUSE INJURY
OR DEATH.
CAUTION: A PROCEDURE, STATEMENT, ETC., WHICH IF NOT
STRICTLY MONITORED, COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE
EQUIPMENT.
NOTE: An important condition or statement for which special data is
necessary.
B. Warnings
Warnings for hazardous substances have been developed from dated Safety Data
Sheets (SDS), when available.
(1) Read and follow specific instructions in SDS for types of personal protective
equipment (safety glasses, gloves, aprons, etc.), for use of ventilators or
respirators, for types of fire extinguishers and for treating medical
emergencies.
(2) Read and follow the hazardous material label posted on the container for
specific substances and the SDS supplied by the manufacturer.
(3) Follow established shop practices and procedures when using, handling, and
storing hazardous materials.
(4) Dispose of hazardous materials by complying with existing federal, state, or
local regulations.

C. Hazardous Warning Symbols
The following symbols are applicable to materials that may pose a health or
environmental risk. These materials should be handled with care and disposed of
properly. For more information, including specific hazard definitions, refer to the
OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200 (HCS).
The skull and crossbones symbol indicates that the material may be acutely
toxic. Improper handling may result in internal organ damage or death.
The exclamation mark symbol indicates that the material may cause harm to
the handler. The material may be an irritant or skin sensitizer. It may also be a
respiratory tract irritant.
The health hazard symbol indicates that a material may cause harm to the
handler. The material may be a known carcinogen or a respiratory sensitizer.
It may be a reproductively toxic substance, an aspiration hazard, or may target
specific organs.
The exploding bomb symbol indicates that the material is, or may contain,
explosives, self-reactives, or organic peroxides. Improper handling may result
in serious injury or environmental damage.
The flame over circles symbol indicates that the material is an oxidizer.
Improper handling may result in fire or explosion.
The gas cylinder symbol indicates that the material contains gasses under
pressure. Improper handling may result in injury or environmental damage.

The UNS-1Csp is available in a number of configurations and software versions. The
basic or standard FMS navigation computer runs 6XX.X series software while the
Multi-Mission version (MMMS) runs 7XX.X series software. The MMMS adds
special mission search patterns to the system’s basic capabilities.
The current part number matrix is shown below.
C. Configuration Module
The UNS-1Csp FMS is configured to its specific aircraft installation by a
Configuration Module that is part of each aircraft’s wiring installation. It is attached
to the aircraft side of a UNS-1Csp rear connector. At the time of installation, the
Configuration Module is programmed through CDU inputs to completely define the
sensor input ports, fuel flow type, air data type, EFIS interface, etc. Maintenance of
the Configuration Module is not required or included in this manual.
D. Flat Panel Control Display Unit (FPCDU)
The FPCDU, an integral part of the UNS-1Csp, is the means by which the operator
manually enters data into the NCU, selects the desired mode of operation, and reads
the resulting computed or raw data. In addition, the FPCDU provides for the control
of all navigational sensors including initialization, deselection/reselection and data
displays. The FPCDU also provides remote control and tuning of the TACAN and
aircraft radios with the Radio Tune unit installed. Certain annunciations concerning
system and sensor faults are also included in the FPCDU displays. The Configuration
Module is programmed through the FPCDU at installation.

E. Data Transfer Unit (DTU)
The DTU is connected to the UNS-1Csp FMS and loads the navigation database. The
DTU can also record and load pilot-defined data. Maintenance of the DTU is not
included in this manual.
2. Operation
A. General
Operation of the unit is presented in the applicable Operator’s and Technical Manuals
located in the Introduction section Paragraph. 4.
B. Navigation Computer
The Navigation Computer is an integral part of the UNS-1Csp FMS and, as such, it is
operated through the various keys on the FPCDU. The FPCDU provides all the
controls necessary to communicate with the Navigation Computer and associated
navigation sensors.
The UNS-1Csp FMS and MMMS Operator’s Manuals introduce the FPCDU, explain
the operating philosophy, and provide a detailed explanation of the keyboard keys
and their associated functions.
C. Compatibility Table
The following table indicates SCN and software versions of the various CCA’s in the
unit. Refer to this chart in conjunction with the nameplate and, if installed, field
modification label on the unit.

B. Calibration
Make sure that all required test equipment calibrations are current. Refer to ATE
Report No. 34-65-01 (P/N 1098-0X) or ATE I Report No. 34-65-07 (P/N 1097-0X)
for calibration requirements and procedures.
C. Unit Under Test (UUT) With System Components
NOTE: Perform the physical checks described in Paragraph 4.B. before connecting
the UUT to the Automated Test Equipment.
(1) Connect an ATE wiring harness to the UUT’s three “J” connectors. The
wiring harness connectors are labeled to prevent incorrect connections. Use
the correct wiring harness for the FMS being tested. The table below will
assist you in selecting the correct ATE harness.

RETURN YOU TO THE MENU SCREEN. Press each key several times to
verify switching operation. Check that each key’s silk-screen label
corresponds to the display on the screen. Press BACK to exit.
(3) Select MISC. TESTS and press ENTER. Verify that each item tested indicates
PASS:

(a) Verify that all ten screen color formats are displayed followed by a
blank screen.

F. Running an Automated Test
Once all physical checks are completed, any modifications are accomplished, and
correct software versions are loaded, an automated test can be executed. The test
harness and all other connections were previously made.
CAUTION: USE ONLY THE ON/OFF BUTTONS ON THE TOOL BAR TO
APPLY POWER TO THE UUT, DO NOT USE THE ON/OFF
DIM KEY ON THE FMS KEYPAD.
(1) Double click TEST FMS icon (or press Q1) and follow on-screen prompts.
Some of the information you input will appear on the printed test results.
(2) The UUT will power up and initialize. Enter the local position and time
(UTC) on the INIT page. Accept (LSK 5L) the page and click the OK button
on the computer screen.
NOTE: If UUT is GPS-capable it requires a correct position and UTC for
proper testing.
(3) During the test, results will be displayed on the monitor screen. After testing
is completed a series of questions will appear. These physical checks and
software version verification were accomplished before testing began. Record
the results at this time.
(4) The next screen prompt asks if you require a printed report. You can print the
test results on any currently installed Windows printer.
(5) Review test results and ensure that all items are marked “PASS”. If any
“FAIL” indications appear in the test results, rerun the test.
(6) If there are still “FAIL” indications, run a board-level test on the NCU by
pressing “Q2” on the tool bar or adjust, troubleshoot, fix or replace the board,
then rerun the test.
(7) Once all testing is complete, exit from the ATE program and turn off ATE
power.
(8) Disconnect FMS from ATE wiring harness.
(9) Install FMS top cover.

5. Fault Isolation
A. Automated Testing Report
The Automated Test Equipment generates a report of “PASS/FAIL” findings. The
report is grouped to reflect the test results of each circuit board. Any one “FAIL”
indication points to a particular circuit board.
(1) Once automated testing of the FMS is complete, review the printed report for
“FAIL” indications.
(2) If there are any “FAIL” indications on the report, run a second automated test
and review the report. Any “FAIL” indications will point to specific circuit
boards.
(3) Reseat the failed board and run another test. If this does not clear the “FAIL”
indication, adjust roll steering and/or fuel flow. If this does not clear the
“FAIL” indication, replace the circuit board.
B. User Input Test
After all circuit board testing is entered into the test report, information input by the
test technician will be printed. This information is based on computer inputs made
before automated testing was accomplished. It includes checks of the individual front
panel keys, faceplate lighting, and the display. Check this information for accuracy.
(1) Stuck or inoperative keys on the front panel - replace front panel assembly.
(2) Failed pixels on display - replace LCD.
NOTE: Parameters for LCD replacement: Twelve or more failed pixels
scattered over the display or a group of failed pixels that creates
operator distraction or limits the capabilities of the FMS.
C. Software Versions
The test report includes a section indicating which software versions are currently
running in the UUT. Update software as required.
NOTE: Some software upgrades are done in conjunction with hardware
modifications. The Repair section of this manual provides instructions for
accomplishing software upgrades.
NOTE: If a UNS-1Csp is configured with FMC SCN 602.X/702.X or earlier, SCN
version is shown on the FMS initialization page, INIT 1/1. The Display
software version is shown on the TEST page (ON/OFF DIM, OFF, LSK 1L,
LSK 5L to view the TEST page). Additionally, version numbers for all
other installed software are listed on DATA page 5.

D. Loose Parts Inside Unit
Loose parts inside the unit can be either an item that detached from the unit itself or a
foreign object. If the unit has a reported failure or suspect of loose parts inside, do not
connect unit to the test equipment or apply power, loose parts inside the unit can
cause a short and damage the unit. Perform the following steps:
(1) Remove cover from the unit and inspect for loose parts inside.
(2) Tilt unit upside down and gently shake to see if loose part is removed.
(3) If loose part is still there, disassemble unit as described in the Disassembly
section of this manual until the loose parts is found.
(4) Identify loose part:
• Does it belong to the unit?
• Does it need to be re-installed?
• Is it a component from a damaged CCA?
• Is it a foreign object to be discarded?
(5) Inspect all CCAs for any damaged, missing or loose components, and/or heat
damage. Replace CCA’s if necessary.
E. Damaged Connector Pins
In the case of any damaged, bent or broken pins on any connector, replace applicable
sub-assembly prior to attaching unit to test equipment.

(1) Break the Quality Control Seal and remove the five screws (IPL Fig. 1, 10)
securing the top cover (20) of the FMS.
NOTE: The factory normally places the Quality Control Seal across the top
and side of the unit covering two screws.
(2) Remove the two screws (100) from either side of the case near the top.
NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the four screws (15) from the mounting
block (105) in order to remove the top cover.

hydraulic fluid or other oily or chemical substance, return it to the factory. If an interior sub-

1. General
These procedures are intended to identify any physical defects or damage that may be
observed without disassembling the unit. These checks must be performed upon receiving
unit in the shop and before returning unit to service.
Customers occasionally remove the mounting hardware (DZUS Fasteners) from Universal
Avionics products and use an alternate mounting method. Therefore, when a unit is received
for Repair/ Service and all of the fasteners are missing it may be assumed that this is the
case. The unit may be returned to the customer without the mounting hardware after it has
been serviced/ repaired. The missing items must be documented in the Tear Down Report. It
will be the responsibility of the customer to assure proper and complete configuration prior
to installation and use on aircraft. If the unit is received with one or more (but not all)
fasteners missing, new fasteners must be installed to replace the missing ones prior to
returning the unit to the customer.
Any visible damaged or missing hardware must be documented. It will be the responsibility
of the customer to assure proper and complete configuration prior to installation and use on
aircraft.

The calibration of the instruments must be regularly examined and certified in agreement
with the applicable government and commercial specifications.

Repair
1. General
Repairs to the unit are accomplished through replacement of defective parts. With the
exception of the battery on the CPU board (and GPS board if installed), no soldering is
required. This section also includes procedures for software and database replacement.
Please be aware that software upgrades (major, not decimal point changes) constitute a
significant upgrade and affect aircraft certification. When upgrading software, the installation
documentation must be submitted via STC or Form 337. The Flight Manual Supplement
must be revised and sent along with the submittal. After reinstallation in the aircraft, the
FMS must be reconfigured in accordance with the applicable Technical Manual. The
avionics wiring package for the aircraft must be available in order to determine the
installation configuration of the aircraft. If configuration data sheets are a part of the avionics
wiring package, then they must also be changed. The new Operator’s Manual must be
provided for the aircraft. You may also have to change your navigation database
subscription. Contact Universal Avionics Marketing at (520) 295-2300 or (800) 321-5253.
The FMS nameplate or Field Modification Label must be changed to reflect any software
upgrade information.
All item numbers in parenthesis are referenced to an IPL figure. The IPL figure number is

E. Flight Management Computer Software Upgrade
NOTE: All pilot, navigational, and performance data will be erased as a result of
this procedure. It is recommended that the pilot-defined data be saved to a
disk before performing this procedure. If the performance database is

be located before proceeding with the battery replacement.
NOTE: The following software upgrade requires the use of a Data Transfer Unit
(DTU).
Current installed software version is indicated on the FMS name plate. It is located on
the name plate under “SCN” (Software Control Number). The SCN is also displayed
on DATA 5/5. Follow the steps below to upgrade the Flight Management Computer
software.
NOTE: If a UNS-1Csp is configured with FMC SCN 602.X/702.X or later, software
version numbers will be found on MAINT 1/1. To access this page, press
the DATA function key and press MAINT LSK [5L]. On MAINT 1/1 press
S/W VERS LSK [5L] and all currently installed software versions will be
displayed.
(1) Connect a Data Transfer Unit (DTU) to the FMS.
(2) Turn on the DTU. It will run through a 12-second self-test.
(3) Press the ON/OFF key on the FMS front panel and wait for the FMS to run
through a self-test and initialize. Page INIT 1/1 will be displayed.

F. Clear RAM (Disk Procedure)

(1) Press the MENU function key. The DISK MENU page is displayed.
(2) Press the DISK LOAD LSK [2L]. Disk loading instructions are displayed.
(3) Following the directions, press DISK LOAD on each FMS to display this
page. Insert the RAM Clear disk into the DTU disk drive and press continue.
(4) Press the CONTINUE LSK [2L]. The FMS will check and identify the disk.
NOTE: In multiple installations, when FMSs are synchronized, the RAM
will clear in all FMSs with the following key sequence.
(5) Press the following function keys in sequence: MSG, NAV, LIST, DATA.
The RAM Clear process will begin.
(6) When LOAD PASSED is displayed, remove the RAM Clear disk from the
DTU. Press LSK [5L] to restart the FMS. During the restart, both RAM and
DATABASE sections of the self-test will fail. These fail messages can be
expected and ignored for the purpose of this procedure.

G. NAV Database Load and Update
Periodic updates to this database are provided by subscription. Follow the instructions
below to install the new database.
NOTE: The following database update requires the use of a Data Transfer Unit
(DTU).
NOTE: When configured with SCN 601.X/701.X or later, the UNS-1Csp has two
memory banks for navigation data. This allows loading of the future (to be
current) database before its effective date. The current database remains in
effect until its expiration date at which time the new database will
automatically be selected.
(1) Connect a Data Transfer Unit (DTU) to the FMS.
(2) Turn on the DTU. It will run through a 12-second self-test.
(3) Press the ON/OFF key on the FMS front panel and wait for the FMS to run
through a self-test and initialize.

(6) Insert the first disk and press LSK [5L] (CONTINUE). The following DISK
LOAD page is displayed.
NOTE: Each NAV Database disk is dated and should be verified as to its
currency.
(7) Press LSK [5L] (LOAD) and follow the display prompts.
CAUTION: PRESSING THE [CANCEL] LINE SELECT KEY AT ANY
TIME WILL ABORT THE DATABASE LOAD. THIS ACTION
WILL ERASE THE NAV DATABASE.
NOTE: Do not disturb the DTU or the FMS while the update is in progress.
NOTE: Should an error that would prevent successful completion of the load
occur, a message will appear on the DISK LOAD page.
(8) After the FMS has cleared memory, it will start loading the new database. As
each field completes loading, RCVD will appear next to it. When all data
from the Standard Disk is received, the FMS will test the data for corruption.
When testing is complete, a screen similar to the one shown next will appear.

(9) Press the LOAD NEXT line select key.
(10) Insert the first Extended disk. The FMS will interrogate the disk and display a
screen similar to the one shown below.
(14) If applicable, press the LOAD NEXT line select key to load the Company
Routes database. Otherwise, proceed as follows.
NOTE: If disks are loaded prior to their effective date or after their
expiration date, the CHECK ALL line select key option described
below will not appear. Instead, the LSK will read RETURN.
NOTE: Since the FMS employs a dual cycle database, you must load the
NAV Database twice to fill both databases.
(15) Press the LOAD NEXT line select key, and load the second cycle of the
database.
(16) Press the CHECK ALL line select key if this option is displayed. This action
will cause the loaded database to become the active database.

(17) If the CHECK ALL option is not displayed, press the RETURN line select
key to return to the DISK MENU page.
(18) After loading the database, press the ACCEPT line select key to initialize the
FMS.
H. Pilot-Defined Data Load
The pilot-defined data disk is loaded using the same procedures as loading the
navigation database just described. Press the DISK line select key for the DISK
MENU page.
(1) Insert pilot-defined data disk into the DTU.
(2) Press the DISK line select key and disk loading instructions will be displayed.
(3) Press the DISK LOAD LSK [2L] again. The FMS will check and identify the
disk as pilot data. Follow the instructions displayed.
(4) After loading the pilot-defined data, initialize the FMS once more and ensure
that all self-test functions pass.
(5) Remove the disk.
I. Performance Database Load
The performance database is loaded using similar procedures to loading the
navigation database just described. Press the DISK line select key for the DISK
MENU page.
(1) Insert pilot-defined data disk into the DTU.
(2) Press the DISK line select key, and disk loading instructions will be
displayed.
(3) Press the DISK LOAD LSK [2L] again. The FMS will check and identify the
disk as the performance database. Verify that the aircraft specific data shown
on the DISK LOAD Page is correct Follow the instructions displayed.
(4) After loading the performance database, initialize the FMS once more and
ensure that all self-test functions pass.
(5) Remove the disk and turn off the DTU.
(6) Press the RETURN line select key, then press the DATA function key to
display DATA page 1.
(7) Press the PERF line select key to display the DATA/PERF page. Verify that
the specific aircraft data appearing on the DATA/PERF page is correct.
(8) Press the ON/OFF/DIM key on the FMS to shut down the unit.

(5) When the download is complete, the CPR0G32W Programmer window will
automatically close.

N. Battery Leakage Precautions
If a battery leaked while still soldered to the board, do not attempt to desolder the
battery and replace the board. If battery is still leaking, place the board in a well-
ventilated area for 24 hours or until battery stops leaking. Refer to procedures of your
facility on handling hazardous chemicals.
NOTE: CCA must be scrapped if battery’s content has spilled on to the board.
If the battery starts to leak after being removed from the board, place battery in a
well-ventilated area for 24 hours or until it stops leaking. Follow your facility’s

note of the NAV Database version and save any existing Pilot Data, before replacing
battery. Refer to Save Pilot, Navigational, and Performance Data in this section.

(8) Hold the battery parallel to and firmly against the board surface and solder the

(4) Remove excess solder from the pads, using the solder wick.
(5) Clean pads from any residue with the isopropyl alcohol and acid brush.
(6) The voltage range of a new uninstalled battery is 3.365 to 2.95V.
(7) Match polarity of new battery tabs with pads on the circuit board.
(8) Hold battery against the board surface and solder both tabs to the board.
(9) Clean residual flux from solder area using isopropyl alcohol.
(10) Recheck the new battery for a voltage range of 2.8V minimum.
(11) Using an indelible pen, write the date of installation on the battery.
(12) Apply conformal coating to the soldered area.
(13) Secure GG12 GPS Module W/Holes (5) to GNSS-2400 Internal CCA (10)
with four screws (35) and connect ribbon cable and heater (25) cable to GG12
GPS Module W/Holes. Torque the screws at 4.0 to 6.0 in. lbs.
R. Front Panel Replacement
(1) Remove four screws (located near each Dzus fastener) securing the front
panel to the sides of the FMS housing and lay the Front Panel (IPL Fig. 1, 75)
forward.
(2) Disconnect the ribbon cable at the front panel connector. See photo on Front
Panel replacement.
(3) Lay the new front panel face down in front of the FMS and connect the ribbon
cable to the front panel connector.
(4) Bring the front panel assembly up and secure it in place using four 1/4” flat
head screws (70) installed from the rear.

S. Fan w/Connector Assembly Replacement
NOTE: There may be three fans (P/N 77000013) in the UUT, two mounted on the
rear cover and one on the LCD/Interface Assembly. If one fan fails in the
unit, it is required to remove both fans on the rear bulkhead and replace the
fan on the front bulk head with a new fan, P/N 77000014.
(1) Remove and discard the four screws and nylon washers that secure the fans to
the rear cover assembly.
(2) Remove and discard Fan w/Connector Assemblies in agreement with shop
practices.
(3) Do not replace damaged fans.

(6) Fasten fan mount to PCB with two 3/8 LG pan head screws (75).

The Interface Board W/LCD (IPL Fig. 1, 95) is made up of Display Interface Board
Assembly (IPL Fig. 17, 10 or -10A), 5” AMFT LCD Display (25), Display I/F Fan
Sub-Assembly (-5) and Flat Candle CCFT Lamp (-30).
NOTE: For these repair procedures references to the Display Interface Board

(f) Place the new Flat Candle CCFT Lamp to the right of the Interface
Board (10 or -10A), facing down with the wires on the side of the
board. As shown below.
(g) Slide Thermofit tubing (-115) (thinner) over the top wire and
Thermofit tubing (-110) (thicker) over the bottom wire of the new Flat
Candle CCFT Lamp.
(h) Solder the top wire of the Flat Candle CCFT Lamp to the top wire of
the transformer of the Interface Board (10 or -10A) and the bottom
wire to the bottom wire, with the capacitor, of the transformer.
(i) Slide Thermofit tubing (-110 and -115) over covering the transformer
leads and connections and heat shrink with a heat gun.
(j) Slide 5” AMFT LCD Display (25) over the Flat Candle CCFT Lamp (-
30) connect the ZIF flex cable (-55) to the LCD and connect photo
diode lead from the Lamp with the white wire connected to the
ANODE pin.
(k) Place 5” AMFT LCD Display (25) over Interface Board (10 or -10A)
and slide 5” AMFT LCD Display under the LCD Mounting Clamp
(45) tab and secure with two screws (85) and two standoffs (90)
between 5” AMFT LCD Display and Interface Board. Torque screws
4.0 to 6.0 in. lbs.

A. Techniques for Handling Electrostatic Discharge Sensitive Equipment

E. Installing the Side Panels
NOTE: Each side panel set consists of one large aluminum panel (120, 130) and one
smaller stainless steel panel (125, 135).
(1) Install the side panels on one side of the FMS using eight 1/4” flat head
screws (115) on the side and five screws (115) along the bottom. Repeat for
the other side. Torque the screws at 4.0 to 6.0 in. lbs.
NOTE: Be sure to align screw holes carefully. It may be necessary to adjust
bulkhead locations slightly to align holes.
NOTE: View shown with unit that has the Fan Assemblies with Connectors
(165). Side panel installation is the same for units with or without
Fan Assemblies w/Connectors.

5. Storage Instructions
A. General
(1) Incorrect storage conditions can cause damage to the parts. Such conditions
are, but not limited to:
• Moisture
• High temperature (over 125°F)(52°C)
• Fuel or solvents
• Fumes that can cause corrosion
• Mechanical stresses
• Ultraviolet light
(2) Parts that have been stored in these conditions must be examined for damage
and replaced as necessary.
B. Prepare the Unit for Storage
Put the assembled sealed unit on a shelf until needed.
C. Monitor Storage Conditions
(1) Keep the unit in an area away from high temperatures, dust, moisture and
fumes that can cause corrosion.
(2) The recommended storage temperature is less than 100°F (38°C) and must not
be more than 125°F (52°C).
(3) Control humidity to prevent moisture on the unit.

Introduction
1. Makeup and Use of This Supplement
This supplement provides testing and troubleshooting information for the GG12 Module
located in FMS, GPS, and GLS units. This supplement is to be used in conjunction with the
applicable Component Maintenance Manuals (CMM). This supplement assumes that the
GG12 Module has been removed from the Flight Management System (FMS), GPS, or GLS
unit and that the applicable CMM disassembly procedures were used in removal of the
module.
This supplement will provide information on how to properly test the GG12 Module. It will
also provide troubleshooting information and repair procedures.
This supplement and the procedures contained herein are intended for use by repair
technicians that are specifically trained to perform these functions.
2. Abbreviations and Terminology
This supplement contains no abbreviations or terms that have varying interpretations
throughout the industry.
The term GPS is used when referring to the Global Positioning System capabilities of the
GG12 Module.
The terms GLN is used when referring to GLONASS, which is also supported through the
GG12 Module. GLN will be referenced in the Testing and Fault Isolation section of this
supplement.

storing hazardous materials.

C. Hazardous Warning Symbols
The following symbols are applicable to materials that may pose a health or
environmental risk. These materials should be handled with care and disposed of
properly. For more information, including specific hazard definitions, refer to the
OHSA Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200 (HCS).
The skull and crossbones symbol indicates that the material may be acutely
toxic. Improper handling may result in internal organ damage or death.
The exclamation mark symbol indicates that the material may cause harm to
the handler. The material may be an irritant or skin sensitizer. It may also be a
respiratory tract irritant.
The health hazard symbol indicates that a material may cause harm to the

3. Test Setup
The following information contains procedures for setting up and testing the GG12 Module
through a module test, simulator test, and systems test. The module test is used for manual
testing and verification of the RF signals that are sent out through the GG12 Module. This
testing requires the technician to perform visual checks and identify the coating of the
module prior to testing and to make sure equipment is properly calibrated on a regular basis.
The simulator test and systems test are fully automated and only require initial setup along
with the basic visual checks prior to testing. Calibration of the test equipment will be
routinely conducted per Repair Station standards and practices.
A. Calibration
Make sure that all required test equipment calibrations are current.
B. Visual Checks
(1) Identify the coating on the GG12 Module as either thin coating or thick
coating.
NOTE: Module serial numbers (S/N) between GT19990XXXX and
GT320031XXXX have thin coating.
Module serial numbers (S/N) between GT320032XXXX and
GT320094XXXX have thick coating.
(2) Check hardware; make sure that there are no loose, missing or damaged parts.
(3) Verify that the connectors and pins are not damaged, bent, loose or missing.
NOTE: If the unit fails any of these checks, refer to the Fault Isolation
section of this manual.

(2) Connect the ribbon cable from the TA11 Test Fixture to J501 of the GG12
Module.
(3) Connect the TA11 Test Fixture to the D/C power supply.
(4) Connect from Port A of the TA11 Test Fixture to PC #1 with a serial port
cable.
(5) Connect the Bootloader Interface Cable from PC #1 to Port C of the TA11
Test Fixture.
(6) Connect the corresponding antenna cable to J101 of the GG12 Module.
(7) Connect the hi-frequency FET probe to the spectrum analyzer.
(8) Characterize insertion loss in the cable path between the signal generator and
the GG12 Module at the GPS frequency band. Apply an appropriate offset to
the spectrum analyzer to account for the loss.

(3) Connect the antenna to power splitter with a 50 ohm, SMA male-to-BNC
male cable.
(4) Connect the GPS Simulator to the antenna with a 50 ohm, N male-to-SMA
male cable.
(5) Connect a 50 ohm, SMA male-to-BNC male cable to the open connector on
the power splitter. Attach a BNC splice and terminator to the other end of the
cable.
(6) Connect the 3-pin diagnostic cable from COM port 1 of the test PC to E8 of
the GG12 MODULE.
NOTE: The DBM9 end of the cable will go to the test PC.
(7) Connect the Host PC port on the back of the GPS Simulator to a USB port on
the test PC.
E. Systems Test Equipment Setup

(3) Connect the outside antenna #2 to the TF 172 Test Fixture.
(4) Connect the TF 172 Test Fixture to PC #2.
F. GG12 Module Setup
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THATA D/C BLOCK IS CONNECTED TO THE
SIGNAL GENERATOR OR THE MODULE MAY BE DAMAGED.
If this is to be the final test, the module must be fully assembled and perform the
Visual Checks specified above before connecting the module to the test equipment.
(1) Connect the TA11 Test Fixture to PC #1 and the D/C power supply.
(2) Connect the TA11 Test Fixture to the GG12 Module through the ribbon cable
that is provided with the TA11 Test Fixture.
(3) Connect the GG12 Interface Cable to Port C of the TA11 Test Fixture.
(4) Connect the GG12 Interface Cable to the parallel port on PC #1.
(5) Connect the cable from either the signal generator or outside antenna #1 to the
GG12 Module.
(6) Verify that both PC #1 and PC #2 are on and in proper working order.
(7) Verify that the spectrum analyzer is on and in proper working order.
(8) Verify that the digital multimeter is on and in proper working order.
(9) Verify that the frequency counter is on and in proper working order.

Programming Verification section.
B. GG12 Module Programming Verification
(1) Connect the GG12 Module using the diagram below.

(2) Attach the GG12 Module to the GNSS-2400 Internal Board CCA
(P/N 02116075X).
(3) Insert the GNSS-2400 Internal Board CCA into the test FMS.
(4) Connect the RS232 cable from the test PC to the FMSMON connector on the
ARINC Receptacle (P/N 00111660).
(5) Connect the test FMS to the FMS terminal using the FMS power harness.
NOTE: The FMS power harness is also connected to the 28V power supply.
(6) Turn on the 28V power supply.
(7) Flip the ON/OFF switch on the FMS terminal to ON.
(8) Open the GNSS HyperTerminal application located on the PC desktop.
(9) Go to page 2 to verify if FB01 is present in the GG12 Module.

(1) Connect the GG12 Module to the TA11 Test Fixture and allow 15 minutes for
warm up. Refer to the Module Test Equipment Setup section for test setup
information.
(2) Turn on the D/C power supply and measure the current between 0.40 and 0.50
amps.
(3) Using the digital multimeter, measure the tuning voltage of the GPS LO at
C332 pin 1. The voltage reading should be between 1.0 and 3.3 volts.
(4) Measure the voltage of the GLN LO at C311
pin 1.The voltage reading should be between 1.0 and 3.3 volts.
(5) Measure the voltage of the second GLN LO at C333 pin 1. The voltage
reading should be between 1.0 and 3.3 volts.
D. Oscillator Verification
(1) Verify that the oscillator at U301 is functioning and tuned. To tune the
oscillator, do the following:
(a) Connect the FET probe to the frequency counter.
(b) Make sure the TA11 Test Fixture is connected to the D/C power
supply and the GG12 Module.
(c) With the FET probe, measure the oscillator at 20,000,000 Hz
+/- 10 Hz.
NOTE: Adjust the oscillator as necessary with the ceramic tweaker.

F. RF Signal Verification
(1) Secure a D/C block to the output of the signal generator. Then, connect the
output to the RF connector J101 on the module.
(2) Set the frequency on the signal generator to 1575.42 MHz and the level to
-110 dBm.
(3) Adjust the following settings on the spectrum analyzer:
(a) Change the resolution bandwidth to 1 KHz.
(b) Change the video bandwidth to 1 Hz.
(c) Change the sweep time to 20 seconds.
(d) Change the center frequency to 8.955 MHz.
(e) Change the frequency span to 50 KHz.
(f) Change the attenuation to 0 dBm.
(g) Change the reference level to -20.0 dBm.
(4) Measure the 8.955 MHz signal at any of the pins on C139. Verify that the
level is greater than -40 dBm.
(5) Adjust the marker so that the reading is 10 KHz lower than the frequency
peak. Subtract this level reading from the reading at the peak. The difference
should be greater than 28 dBm.
(6) Set the signal generator to 1602.0 MHz with a level of -110 dBm.
(7) Measure the 2.625 MHz signal at any of the pins on C248. Verify that the
level is greater than -47 dBm.
(8) Adjust the marker so that the reading is 10 KHz lower than the frequency
peak. Subtract this level reading from the reading at the peak. The difference
should be greater than 18 dBm.
(9) Turn off the output of the signal generator.
G. GG12 Digital Test
(1) Connect the ribbon cable from the TA11 Test Fixture to J501 of the GG12
Module. Refer to the Module Test Equipment Setup section for instructions
on how to set up the module.
(2) Disconnect the antenna cable from the signal generator. Connect the cable to
the antenna cable that is routed to Outside Antenna #1.
(3) Turn on the D/C power supply.
(4) Turn on the TA11 Test Fixture.
NOTE: The light will remain solid red.

(5) Test the GG12 Module through the GGI test by doing the following:
(a) With the module still connected to the PC and TA11 Test Fixture,
open the GGI_Test application.
(b) In the Receiver List menu, select GG12 and press Continue.
(c) In the GG12 menu, select Auto.
(d) The Auto Digital Test will begin. Once PASS is displayed after the
test has finished, press Cancel and exit the program.
(6) Test the GG12 Module through Evaluate by doing the following:
NOTE: Evaluate is designed to diagnose issues with the GG12 Module that
will require further troubleshooting and will only be used if the TF-
172 Test Fixture is unavailable.
(a) On PC #1, open the program Evaluate.
(b) In the Evaluate start-up menu, select “Connect to GPS Receiver with
last settings” in the Start from section. Click Ok.
(c) An Initialization Complete command window will pop up. Click Ok.
(d) A blank screen will appear. Click on the computer icon, the binoculars
icon, and the green screen icon to display the Sky Chart, GPS Receiver
Terminal, and Indicator Panel.
(e) Verify that the Sky Chart, GPS Receiver Terminal, and Indicator Panel
windows are open and that satellites are visible and stable. When
finished, exit the Evaluate program.
H. GG12 Final Acceptance Testing
(1) Connect J501 of the GG12 Module to the GG12 #1 connector on the GG12
Interface Test Fixture (P/N TF 172). Refer to the Systems Test Equipment
Setup section for test setup information.
(2) Connect the corresponding antenna cable to J101 of the GG12 Module.
(3) After connecting the Test Fixture TF 172 to PC #2, open the GG12 Test
application.
(4) Once the application loads, click the arrow in the bar towards the top of the
window.
(5) Enter the information for the module and press Start.
(6) Let the test run and verify that the module has passed.

(7) Set up the GG12 Module per the Simulator Test Equipment Setup section and
do the following:
(a) Turn on the PC and GPS Simulator.
(b) On the PC desktop, double-click the SimPlex icon.
(c) Browse to the following location when prompted for a scenario:
C:\Program Files|Spirent Communications\SimPlex\Scenarios\
SimPlex_Sensor_II_compare.
(d) Select the SensorII_compare.sim scenario.
(8) To clear the almanac and ephemeris data from the GG12 Module, do the
following:
(a) Remove the ribbon cable from J501 of the GG12 Module. Reconnect
the cable after approximately 10 seconds to clear the almanac and
ephemeris data.
(9) To record data, do the following:
(a) Power on the FMS and wait for it to initialize.
(b) On the FMS, press LS5 to accept the location, date, and time.
(c) On the test PC, browse to the following location:
C:\GG12 GPS Test\UASCTerm. Run UASCTerm.exe.
(d) Click on the View drop-down menu and make sure Diagnostics is
selected.
(e) Click on the File drop-down menu followed by Connect.
(f) A diagnostics menu will appear on the monitor. On the PC keyboard,
press 2 followed by Enter to select the GNSS page.
(g) In the SimPlex program, click on the green arrow to run the
simulation.
NOTE: Make sure that the “Active” light on the GPS Simulator is
green before proceeding.
(h) Verify that the GG12 is acquiring satellites and using them on the
UASCTerm program.
NOTE: Satellites will appear in the 12 channel slots with two
asterisks when they are acquired. When the two asterisks are
dropped from the SVID, the satellites are in use.
(i) Allow the simulation to run until all 12 channels have a satellite in use.
This should take approximately 15 minutes.
(j) When all 12 channels have satellites in use, click the View drop-down
menu followed by Dump Screen.

(d) Check the voltage at J501. The level should be 5 volts +/- .1 volt. If
the voltage is outside of this range or is not present, remove and
replace the inductors L118 and L119.
B. Damaged Connector Pins
In the case of any damaged, bent or broken pins on any connector, replace applicable
components prior to testing the GG12 Module.

Introduction
1. Makeup and Use of This Supplement
This supplement provides testing and troubleshooting information for the GPS Simulator that
will be used in conjunction with FMS, GPS, and GLS units. This supplement is to be used
with the applicable Component Maintenance Manuals (CMM) and is currently only available
for use with American Eagle units.
This supplement will provide information on how to properly test GPS units through the
simulator and how to collect the data for either GG12 modules or Sensor II modules.
The supplement and the procedures contained herein are intended for use by repair
technicians that are specifically trained to perform these functions.

This supplement contains no abbreviations or terms that have varying interpretations
throughout the industry.

B. Warnings
Warnings for Hazardous substances have been developed from dated Material Safety
Data Sheets (MSDS), when available.
(1) Read and follow specific instructions in MSDS for types of personal
protective equipment (safety glasses, gloves, aprons, etc.), for use of
ventilators or respirators, for types of fire extinguishers and for treating
medical emergencies.
(2) Read and follow the hazardous material label posted on the container for
specific substances and the MSDS supplied by the manufacturer.
(3) Follow established shop practices and procedures when using, handling, and
storing hazardous materials.
(4) Dispose of hazardous materials by complying with existing federal, state, or
local regulations.

The skull and crossbones symbol indicates that the material may be acutely
toxic. Improper handling may result in internal organ damage or death.
The exclamation mark symbol indicates that the material may cause harm to
the handler. The material may be an irritant or skin sensitizer. It may also be a
respiratory tract irritant.
The health hazard symbol indicates that a material may cause harm to the
handler. The material may be a known carcinogen or a respiratory sensitizer.
It may be a reproductively toxic substance, an aspiration hazard, or may target
specific organs.
The exploding bomb symbol indicates that the material is, or may contain,
explosives, self-reactives, or organic peroxides. Improper handling may result
in serious injury or environmental damage.
The flame over circles symbol indicates that the material is an oxidizer.
Improper handling may result in fire or explosion.

(1) Make sure the UUT is connected to the 28 VDC power supply.
NOTE: The connections to the power supply are built into the test bench.
(2) Power on the unit and wait for it to initialize.
(3) On the 4” FPCDU, press LSK [5L] to accept the location, date, and time.
(4) Press LSK [1R] to highlight the date field.
(5) Input “456789” in the date field and press [ENTER].
(6) Press [DATA] to reach Data Page 1. Then, press LSK [5R] for the MAINT
menu.
(7) Press LSK [1L] for the CONFIG menu.

Introduction
1. Makeup and Use of This Supplement
This supplement provides testing and troubleshooting information for the Sensor II Module
located in FMS and GPS-1000 units. This supplement is to be used in conjunction with the
applicable Component Maintenance Manuals (CMM).
The supplement and the procedures contained herein are intended for use by repair
technicians that are specifically trained to perform these functions.
2. Abbreviations and Terminology
This supplement contains no abbreviations or terms that have varying interpretations
throughout the industry.
The term GPS is used when referring to the Global Positioning System capabilities of the
Sensor II Module.
The term BUT is used when referring a Board Under Test.
3. Affected Products
This supplement was created for FMS and GPS units. Refer to the chart below for specific
units and Universal Avionics’ part numbers.

(1) Perform all procedures in an ESD safe environment that includes ESD table
mats, ESD flooring or floor mats, and ESD safe workstation.
CAUTION: DO NOT PUT ON OR REMOVE A SMOCK IN THE AREA
WHERE UNPACKED ESDS ASSEMBLIES ARE PRESENT.
THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO ESDS COMPONENTS.
CAUTION: DO NOT WEAR SMOCKS, SHOES, GLOVES OR FINGER
COTS MADE OF PLASTIC, RUBBER, OR NYLON. THIS CAN
CAUSE DAMAGE TO ESDS COMPONENTS.
(2) ESD safe apparel:
ESD smock
ESD wrist strap
ESD heel strap or other ESD safe footwear (in case of mobility), if
required
(3) Ground tools and other objects before using them with any component. Avoid
contact between ESDS components and other objects.
CAUTION: DIELECTRIC STRENGTH OR INSULATION RESISTANCE
TESTS WILL DAMAGE A UNIT CONTAINING ESDS
ASSEMBLIES.
(4) Do not perform dielectric strength or insulation resistance tests on a unit
containing ESDS assemblies.
(5) Do not touch assembly contacts with bare hands. Perspiration may cause
corrosion and lead to noisy or faulty operation.
(6) Observe the following procedures when replacing a module:
(a) Remove power from the unit.
(b) When removing or installing a module, grasp it by the edges only. Do
not touch any circuit paths, components or component leads.
(c) Place removed modules in an ESD protective container or an ESD
shielding bag when not being used, tested, or serviced.
(7) To prevent accidental damage and the entry of dust and dirt, store the module
in a temperature and humidity controlled area. Install conductive covers as
necessary. Module can also be stored in an ESD protective container or an

3. Test Setup
A. Calibration
Make sure that all required test equipment calibrations are current.
B. Visual Checks
(1) Make sure that the top RF shield is removed from the Sensor II Module.
NOTE: Both RF shields can be removed to access test points. The following
steps include the original and alternate test points for verifying
frequencies. The alternate verification points only require the
removal of the top RF shield.
(2) Check hardware; make sure that there are no loose, missing or damaged parts.
(3) Verify that the connectors and pins are not damaged, bent, loose or missing.
NOTE: If the unit fails any of these checks, refer to the Fault Isolation
section of this manual.

(7) Use the digital multimeter to measure the tuning voltage level at the junction
of R517 and C515 located under the tall RF can. The voltage should be
between 0.5 VDC and 2.5 VDC.
(8) Connect the low frequency probe to the frequency counter.
(9) Measure the output frequency at U301 pin 4 at 20.460000 MHz +/- 10 Hz.
NOTE: The range should be between 20.459990 and 20.460010 MHz.
Adjust the oscillator at X501 until the frequency is in the specified
range.
(10) Connect the output of the signal generator to the SMA antenna input on the
Sensor II Module at J101.
NOTE: Use a D/C block when connecting the signal generator output to the
SMA antenna input.
(11) Set the signal generator for an un-modulated signal of 1.57542 GHz at -90
dBm.
(12) Set the center frequency on the spectrum analyzer to 1.53088 GHz with a span
of 100 kHz. Set the range to -20 dBm.
(13) Use the FET probe (P/N HP 85024A) to measure the VCO signal level at the
ground side of X502 at greater than or equal to -37 dBm.
(14) Set the center frequency on the spectrum analyzer to 3.309 MHz with a span
of 100 kHz. Set the range to -15 dBm.
(15) Use the FET probe (P/N HP 85024A) to measure the 3.309 MHz signal level
at U505 pin 20 at 30 dBm +/- 10 dBm.
NOTE: This signal level can also be verified at C523 and L504 pin 2. These
components are located under the top RF shield.
(16) Set the range to 5 dBm and leave the frequency settings the same.
(17) Use the FET probe (P/N HP 85024A) to measure the 3.309 MHz signal level
at U505 pin 11 at greater than -2 dBm.
NOTE: This signal level can also be verified at C525 and R307 pin 1. These
components are located under the top RF shield.

(8) Press [Alt] followed by [0]. The BUT should respond with
“$PASHR,PRT,B,5”.
(9) Move the serial cable to Port A of the Sensor II Test Harness and press [Alt]
[0] again. The BUT should respond with “$PASHR,PRT,A,5”.
(10) Press [Alt] followed by [1]. The BUT should respond with “$PASHR,RST”.
(11) Press [Alt] followed by [2]. The BUT should respond with “FFF0 0001 8000
0000 0000” after reset.
(12) Press [Alt] followed by [3]. The BUT should respond with “ERROR:
000000000000 000000000000000000000000.
NOTE: Make sure there are 36 zeroes present in the error response and that
there is a space separating the twelfth and thirteenth zero.

(13) Press [Alt] [7] followed by [Alt] [8]. The BUT should respond with
alternating “$PASHR,POS,A,ON” and “$PASHR,SAT,A,ON” messages.
NOTE: The variables “nn” represent the number of satellites locked by the
BUT.
(14) Wait approximately four minutes and verify that the satellite number has
changed.
(15) The POS messages on the screen will read the following:
“$PASH,POS,0,nn,XXXXXX.00,37aa.bbbbbb,N,121cc,dddddd,W,…”.
NOTE: The “nn” represents the number of satellites being used to determine
position, “XXXXXX” represents current UTC time, “aa.bbbbbb”
represents the minutes in latitude, and “cc.dddddd” represents the
number of minutes in longitude. For the purpose of this example,
“37” and “121” are the degrees of latitude and longitude and actual
numbers may vary.
(16) Press [Alt] [4] followed by [Alt] [5] to turn off the POS and SAT messages.
NOTE: The BUT should stop updating and respond with
“$SPASHR,POS,A,OFF” followed by “$PASHR,ACK*3D” and/or
“$SPASHR,SAT,A,OFF” followed by “$PASHR,ACK*3D”.
(17) Press [Alt] followed by [9]. The BUT should respond with
“$PASHR,RID,SE,1E97,DRP--l*61” where “1E97” is the version number of
the firmware loaded into the test.
