PART A

1.0 Brief Introduction –

A gas power plant is a thermal power plant that uses natural gas as its
primary fuel to generate electricity. Maintenance in such plants is crucial for
ensuring efficiency, reliability, and safety. This report discusses preventive
and predictive maintenance procedures designed to avoid unexpected
failures and maximize the lifespan of the power plant components.

To develop comprehensive preventive and predictive maintenance

procedures for a typical gas power plant, focusing on the main components
like gas turbines, compressors, heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), and
electrical systems.

PART B

1.0 Brief Introduction –

A gas power plant is a thermal power plant that uses natural
gas as its primary fuel to generate electricity. Maintenance in such
plants is crucial for ensuring efficiency, reliability, and safety. This
report discusses preventive and predictive maintenance
procedures designed to avoid unexpected failures and maximize
the lifespan of the power plant components.

To develop comprehensive preventive and predictive

maintenance procedures for a typical gas power plant, focusing on
the main components like gas turbines, compressors, heat
recovery steam generators (HRSG), and electrical systems.

2.0 Aims of project :-

Develop maintenance procedure for preventive and
predictive maintenance of typical Gas power plant and its
components

3.0 Course outcome addressed:-

4.0 Theory –

Layout of Gas Power Plant

 Components of Gas Power Plant -

1. Gas Turbines: Convert fuel energy into mechanical energy to drive

generators.
2. Compressors: Compress the incoming air for the combustion process.
3. Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG): Captures waste heat from the
turbine exhaust to generate steam.
4. Electrical Systems: Includes transformers, switchgear, and control systems.
5. Cooling Systems: Manage the temperature of various components.

 Maintenance Types and their Importance –

1. Preventive Maintenance (PM):

Scheduled activities to reduce the likelihood of equipment failures.

2. Predictive Maintenance (PdM):

Condition-based approach using real-time data to predict potential issues

before they become serious problems.
 Preventive Maintenance Procedures for Components

1. Gas Turbine
 Daily Inspections: Check for unusual noise, vibrations, and temperature
levels.
 Weekly Tasks: Lubricate moving parts and check for oil leaks.
 Monthly Checks: Inspect blades for any signs of wear, and check fuel filters.
 Quarterly: Conduct infrared thermography to detect hot spots.
 Annual Maintenance: Complete disassembly for thorough inspection and
cleaning.

2. Compressor
 Daily: Monitor and record operating parameters like pressure and
temperature.
 Weekly: Check lubricant levels and replace or top up as necessary.
 Monthly: Inspect the filters and replace if needed.
 Annually: Inspect for wear in impellers and clean the intake system.

3. Heat recovery steam generator (HRSG)

 Weekly: Monitor and record temperature and pressure to ensure
efficiency.
 Monthly: Inspect for leaks, corrosion, and deposits in tubes.
 Quarterly: Clean the exhaust gas ducts.
 Annually: Conduct a full inspection, including ultrasonic testing for wall
thickness.

4. Electrical System
 Daily: Check for fluctuations in voltage and current.
 Monthly: Test the circuit breakers and protective relays.
 Quarterly: Inspect transformers for oil levels and perform a thermal scan.
 Annually: Conduct a full electrical inspection including insulation resistance
testing.
 Predictive Maintenance Procedures

1. Vibration Analysis
 Application: To detect early-stage faults in rotating machinery like turbines
and compressors.
 Procedure: Install vibration sensors; analyze readings for abnormal
frequencies indicating wear.

2. Thermal Imaging

 Application: Useful in detecting overheating in electrical components and

gas turbines.
 Procedure: Perform regular thermo graphic scans to identify hotspots in
turbines, HRSG, and electrical systems.

3. Lubrication Analysis

 Application: To monitor oil condition in turbines and compressors.

 Procedure: Periodically test samples of lubricant for contaminants and
metal particles.

4. Ultrasonic Testing

 Application: Used to detect gas leaks in high-pressure systems and measure

wall thickness in HRSG.
 Procedure: Use ultrasonic probes to inspect tube and pipe walls for signs of
thinning or leaks.
5.0 Conclusion: -
Preventive and predictive maintenance are essential for the efficient
operation of a gas power plant. Regular inspection, monitoring, and
maintenance of turbines, compressors, HRSG, and electrical systems not
only increase plant lifespan but also reduce unexpected downtime and
operational costs.
