SCRABBLE

Competition Guidelines

The tournament shall be governed by the Sports Committee Officials and those stated in
the following ground rules:

1. Scrabble shall be played in this tournament with one (1) representative in each
division per House.
2. There shall be a separate division for Boys and Girls. There shall be separate
championship for the Boys and Girls in each division. No alternate players.
3. Each team shall be comprised of two (2) regular players and one (1) coach.
4. The Round Robin System shall be adapted.
5. Players, coaches, and spectators are not allowed to make post games analysis, play
against each other or discuss finished or unfinished games within 10 meter-radius from
the playing area.
6. Players who have finished their games shall retrieve all the used tiles to the tile bag
and vacate the playing area after signing their score sheets and submit it to designated
tournament officials.
7. Coaches and spectators are not allowed in the playing area while the game is in
progress.
8. Only the coaches will be entertained if there are clarifications, issues, and questions
pertaining to technicalities, among others.
9. CONDUCT OF THE PLAYERS and SPECIFIC OFFENCES AND ILLEGAL MOVES
shall be strictly observed.

GAME RULES
1. NOTATION
Recording of words is compulsory. The standard notation includes:
a. The player is required to write down the letters played, indication the new word
formed.
b. No advance recording of moves.
c. The players shall use a grid-based reference system (rows labeled 1-15 and
columns labelled A-O) to specify where the first tile of a word was placed.
d. Specify whether the word is placed horizontally (H) or vertically (V).
e. The player is responsible to record the total points earned for each word formed.
c. The player who neglects to write down more than one (1) move will be warned
by the arbiter/steward. If the same violation is committed after a warning was given, the
player shall lose a turn. For the third violation, he/she will be declared loser by forfeiture.
2. GAME FORMAT
a. Both players draw one tile from the bag to determine who goes first. The player
with the letter closest to "A" starts, with blank tiles acting as the lowest value.
Afterward, return the tiles to the bag, shuffle, and redraw seven tiles each.
b. Players take turns forming words on the board. The first word must cross the
center star. Subsequent words must connect to existing words.
Players may:
Form a word.
Exchange tiles (lose a turn).
Pass (lose a turn).
A player must declare the end of their turn by announcing their score.
c. Players can challenge the validity of a word after it is played. If the word is invalid,
it is removed, and the player loses their turn. If valid, the challenger loses their
turn.
d. The game ends when either:
A player uses all their tiles and there are no more tiles to draw.
Both players consecutively pass two times, resulting in a deadlock.
e. At the end of the game, both players' remaining tiles are subtracted from their
scores. The player who uses all tiles receives a bonus of the sum of the opponent's
leftover tiles added to their score.

3. GAME POINTS
Standard Scrabble scoring applies. Each letter has a point value. Word scores are
determined by the sum of letter values, modified by any premium squares (double/triple
letter or word scores).
a. Blank tiles carry no point value.
b. Tile Value
A (1 point), B (3 points), C (3 points), D (2 points), E (1 point), F (4 points),
G (2 points), H (4 points), I (1 point), J (8 points), K (5 points), L (1 point), M
(3 points), N (1 point), O (1 point), P (3 points), Q (10 points), R (1 point), S
(1 point), T (1 point), U (1 point), V (4 points), W (4 points), X (8 points), Y
(4 points), Z (10 points), Blank (0 points).
c. If a player uses all seven tiles on their track in a single turn, the player earns a
50-point bonus in addition to the regular scored for the word formed.
c. End of Game Bonus
Subtract the total value of leftover tiles from each player's score. If a player
uses all their tiles, the total of the opponent's leftover tiles is added as a
bonus to their final score.
4. TIE BREAKS
In the case of a tie in points, the sequence of the breaks after adjusted scores will be as
follows:
a. Most Bingo Words
b. Highest Single-Word Score
c. Lowest Total Tile Value

5. DEFAULTING TIME
The defaulting time is 10 minutes on the official clock. (Tournament Manager’s clock) of
the concerned player after the game time. Each player is allowed 25 minutes to make all
their moves in a game. A chess clock is used to track time. If a player exceeds their time,
they lose 10 points for every additional minute.

6. It is the responsibility of the player to call the attention of the Arbiter of any dispute of
his/her game.

7. The Chief Arbiter’s decision on a point of law shall be deemed FINAL.

8. All other matters not covered in these rules shall be decided by the Tournament
Manager.
