1.Is statistics important in nursing? Why or Why not?
Ans: Statistics is important in nursing because you can make more informed decisions about patient care, provide sound patient education, and help promote positive patient outcomes by using statistical data from research to understand and interpret research findings to help make informed decisions based on proven evidence. Another reason why statistics is essential in nursing because it helps us nurses read, comprehend, and interpret literature and research findings and apply evidence-based practices to patient care, which helps improve
patient outcomes. Another top reason why statistics is important in nursing is that public health
nurses can use health statistics to understand risk factors affecting various populations or communities. By understanding risk factors, they can then track and monitor disease events, such as how the COVID-19 pandemic has been monitored, assess the quality and safety of healthcare practices, and evaluate the impact of or lobby for changes to healthcare policies. Another top reason why statistics is important in nursing is that public health nurses can use health statistics to understand risk factors affecting various populations or communities. 1. In your own definition, compare and contrast statistics from biostatistics.
Ans: In my own definition, the difference between the statistics from biostatistics is that when you say statistics you are referring to the application of statistical methods to data from a wide variety of fields while biostatistics means focuses specifically on the application of statistical methods to biological and health- related data. Another definition of biostatistics is the application of statistical techniques to scientific research in health-related fields, including medicine, biology, and public health, and the development of new tools to study these areas while statistics means the study and manipulation of data, including ways to gather, review, analyze, and draw conclusions from data. 2. Elucidate ways on how statistics can be used or applied to a day-to-day life. Ans: As a nurse, Statistics can be used or applied to a day-to-day life by monitoring the public health for example getting the census of the COVID-19 patients or the daily census of the admitted patients in the hospital, next one is it helps the us in predicting the disease for instance, when doctors consistently found that more than 80 percent of lung cancer patients were smokers, they researched and concluded that smoking was a key contributor to the disease which then lead to discovering the possible risk of getting that disease. Another important application of statistics in the medical field is establishing genetic susceptibility. Although common diseases can have numerous causes, one of the most prevalent risk factors is family history. Hence, doctors need to use statistics to determine risk. Furthermore, certain diseases are exclusively hereditary. This means that doctors must use statistics to calculate the chances of a baby being born with a genetic disease. 3. Explicitly discuss the benefit of statistics to nurse managers and hospital administrators. Ans: The benefit of statistics to nurse managers and hospital administrators is that the nurse manager can actually use the statistic as a tool for enhancing patient care by prioritizing treatments and determine whether a patient needs immediate medical attention or follow-up care. As a nurse, you will use statistics to identify specific patterns in important signs and symptoms and be able to respond better to any medical changes to your patient. Using frequency charts or data sheets to document the timing of medication given to patients is another way that nurses use statistics. Nurse managers use statistics to determine whether the nursing interventions of their choice are effective. For instance, through statistics, nurses are able to tell that neither replacing intravenous fluids, nor administration sets can reduce infections. In some settings, nurses have to make several decisions during critical care and statistics knowledge comes in handy. Experience and emotional instinct aren’t enough to help make the right decisions.
