INTRODUCTION

CLOY or Crash Landing on You is one of the famous Korean dramas. It started
when Siri landed in North Korea accidentally due to a tornado. For Siri to be taken to North
Korea just like that, what do you think are the magnitude and direction of Tornado for
Siri to crash land in North Korea?

KEY CONCEPTS
Scalars and Vectors

1. Scalar -any physical quantity that has a magnitude magnitude.

Ex. distance, mass, speed, temperature, volume
- 12 m/s
.
2. Vector – any physical quantity that has magnitude and direction
- ex.Displacement, Force, velocity, acceleration
- 45m/s North

Addition of Vectors.
Head to Tail method is a graphical way of to add vectors.

Tail Head
(starting point (end point
of vector) of vector)
1. Vectors in the same direction .

5m east + 2m east

Resultant vector 7 m
2. Vectors in different direction

5m east + (-2m ) west

Resultant vector is 3 m

Resultant vector – is the sum of 2 or more vectors

3. To find the resultant of 2 or more vectors that don’t act in exactly the same or opposite
direction .

Example: Mark walks 3m east and rest for a while then walks
4m north. What is Mark’s overall displacement?

Given: D1 = 3 m east
D2 = 4 m north

component form.
5

Find: R = Overall displacement (resultant vector).

Solution:
1. Plot the head to tail vector using a x, y reference frame.

2. Use Phythagorean theorem in solving the resultant vector.

R=
R= 2

R= 5m
3. To compute for the direction we us ethis equation.

Ɵ = tan-1 b/a

Ɵ = tan-1 4/3

Ɵ = 53.13°

Answer ; 5 m at 53.13°

Resolving Vectors into components

Example: a = 53.0 m at 20°

b = 34m at 63°

Find the resultant vector.

Solution:

1. To compute for resulatant vector use the following equation.

ax = a cos Ɵ = 53.0 cos 20 = 49.80m

bx = b cos Ɵ = 34 cos 63 = 15.4 m

𝛴 𝑥 = 65. 𝑚

ay = a sin Ɵ = 53.0 sin 20 = 18.13 m

by = b sin Ɵ = 34 sin 63 = 30.29 m

𝛴 𝑦 = 8. 𝑚

R = 65. 8. 2

R = 81.25 m

Ɵ =tan-1 (48.42 / 65.24 )

Ɵ = 36.6 °

Answer ; 81.25 m at 36.6°
