Properties of Addition

Properties of Addition are the

various conditions and rules of
addition.
Properties of Addition
The four basic properties of additions are:
1. Commutative property
2. Associative Property
3. Distributive Property
4. Identity Property
Commutative
Property
Commutative Property

Commutative Property is when two

numbers are added, the sum remains
the same even if we change the
order of numbers.
Examples

A+B=B+A
5+6=6+5
11 = 11
Examples

120 + 310 = 310 + 120

430 = 430
Examples

750 + 20 = ___ + 750

___ = 770
Examples

20 + 750
750 + 20 = ___
___ = 770
Examples

20 + 750
750 + 20 = ___
770 = 770
___
Associative
Property
Associative Property

Associative Property is when the

addition of three or more numbers,
the total/sum will be the same, even
when the grouping of addends are
changed.
Examples

A + (B + C) = (A + B) + C
3 + (4 + 5) = (3 + 4) + 5
12 = 12
Examples

12 + (20 + 68) = (12 + 20) + 68

100 = 100
Examples

100 + (700 + 25) = (100 + __) + __

825 = __
Examples

100 + (700 + 25) = (100 + 700

__) + __

825 = __
Examples

100 + (700 + 25) = (100 + 700

__) + __

825 = __
Examples

100 + (700 + 25) = (100 + 700

__) + __

Distributive
Property
Distributive Property
Distributive Property is when the sum
of two numbers multiplied by the third
number is equal to the sum when
each of the two numbers is multiplied
by the third number.
Examples

A x (B + C) = A x B + A x C
8 x (4 + 3) = 8 x 4 + 8 x 3
56 = 56
Examples

10 x (2 + 9) = 10 x 2 + 10 x 9
110 = 110
Examples

10 x (2 + 9) = 10 x 2 + 10 x 9
110 = 110
Examples

__ x (4 + 5) = 8 x __ + __ x 5
__ = 72
Examples

__
8 x (4 + 5) = 8 x __ + __ x 5
__ = 72
Examples

__
8 x (4 + 5) = 8 x __
4 + __ x 5
__ = 72
Examples

__
8 x (4 + 5) = 8 x __
4 + __
8 x5
__ = 72
Examples

__
8 x (4 + 5) = 8 x __
4 + __
8 x5
__
72 = 72
Identity
Property
Identity Property

Identity Property is when you add

ZERO (0) to the number gives the
number itself.
Examples

A + 0 = A or 0 + A = A
10 + 0 = 10
0 + 10 = 10
Examples

1000 + 0 = 1000
0 + 502 = 502
Examples

__ + 371 = 371
0 + ___ = 399
Examples

__
0 + 371 = 371
0 + ___ = 399
Examples

__
0 + 371 = 371
399 = 399
0 + ___
