MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD:

3 topics and construct your own problem:

1 for Age Word Problem
1 for Mixture Problem
1 for Distance, Rate and Time Problem

AGE WORD PROBLEM:

Tom is 8 years more than twice Jerry’s age. 3 years ago, Tom was three times as old
as Jerry. How old was Tom 3 years ago?

Tom Jerry Equation

Present T J T= 8+2J

Past T-3 T-3 T-3 = 3(J-3)

8+2J -3 = 3 (J-3)
5+2J = 3J-9
-2J -2J
5 = J-9
+9 +9
14 = J

Present: J=14 T=36

Past: J=11 T=33 → Answer

MIXTURE PROBLEM:
100 of a 30% alcohol solution is mixed with 300L of a 70% alcohol solution. What is
the concentration of the mixture?

C1 V1 + C2 V2. = C3 V3
(30%)(100%) + (70%)(300L) = C3 (400)
3000 + 21,000 = 400 C3
24,000 = 400 C3
400 400
Answer: 60% = C3

V3 = V1+V2 = 100+300 = 400L

DISTANCE, RATE AND TIME PROBLEMS:
"Tom and Alex are driving towards each other from two cities, 240 miles apart. Tom
is driving at 40 mph, while Alex is driving at 60 mph. How many hours will it take for
them to meet?"

DT + DA = 240 d = vt
40t + 60t = 240 dT = 40t
100t = 240 dA = 60t
10 10
10t = 24
10 10
t = 2.4
0.4×60 =24
Answer : t = 2hrs and 24 minutes
Checking:
•40 mph × 2.4 hours = 96 miles
•60 mph × 2.4 hours = 144 miles
•Total distance = 240 miles

After answering your own formulated problems. The following questions

should be answered.
1. How did you formulate your own problem from the 3 topics mentioned?
Answer: By watching the example videos and analyze how did they answer it,
then I tried my best to make my own.
2. How did you determine that your own constructed problem is aligned in
the 3 topics mentioned?
Answer: I determine that my own constructed problem is aligned in the 3
topics mentioned by double checking it and identifying if my own
constructed problem is related to the 3 topics
3. What do you think of the level of difficulty you encountered upon
constructing the problem?
Answer: In my own experience on how did I make my problem is so hard
because I need to double check if it is related to the topics.
4. How did you arrive at your answers.
Answer: By solving it and try hard to get the correct answers.
5. Enumerate the steps you follow upon answering your constructed
problems.
Answer: First: I watch videos on how they answer it.
Second: Using my mind to solve the problems.
Third: Using a calculator.
