Unit # 01

TOPIC : Algorithm and

Flowchart

Notebook work
Question#01: Answer the following questions.( SHORT QUESTIONS)

1-Define a program.
Ans. The set of instructions given to a computer in a step-by-step manner to

Perform a specific task.

2-What is an algorithm?

Ans. A step-by-step procedure in simple language ( the English language ) that

allows a computer to solve a problem.

3-Define a flowchart?

Ans. A step-by-step procedure to solve a problem presented in pictorial form by

using symbols.

4-In a flowchart, what is he use of the decision making box?

Ans. In decision making box we write the condition i.e, yes or no statements less
than or greater than statements etc.

5-What is the need of arrow marks in a flowchart?

Ans. It connects any two activity symbols. The arrow heads point the direction of
flow of data or information.

Question#02: Give detailed answers of the following. ( LONG QUESTIONS)

1-Write an algorithm to buy a pen.

Ans. Algorithm to buy a pen:

 Start
 Go to a stationer
 Select a pen
 Ask the price of the selected pen.
 Pay the price for pen.
 Take the pen.
 Leave the shop
 Stop
2-Draw a flowchart to buy a pen.

3-Explain flowchart symbols.

1-Start / Stop symbol:

This shape is used to represent the beginning and the end of a

Flowchart. Start or Stop is written inside the oval shape.

2-Input / Output symbol:

A parallelogram is used to represent input as well as output

Operations. Input includes data or the instructions. Output is

the result.
3-Process symbol:

A rectangular box is used to represent processing of

data n a flowchart.Any Calculation or information processing is shown in this box.

4-Decision symbol:

A Rhombus is used to represent a decision making

Step.

5-Printout symbol:

The given symbol is used to represent output that needs to be

printed on paper.

6-Connector symbol:

A circle is used to connect two parts of a flowchart which

may be on two different pages to show the continuity.

Question#03: Fill in the blanks.

1. Every task performed by computer is basically a problem.

2. To solve a problem, a procedure needs to be followed.
3. A program is written with computer languages.
4. The first step of any algorithm is start.
5. A parallelogram is used to represent input as well as output operation.

Question#04: State the following statements as true or false.

1. BASIC is not a computer language. ( False )

2. Flowchart should be drawn before writing a program. ( True )
3. A Rhombus is used to represent input. ( False )
4. Flow lijes should have arrow head. ( True )
5. Always end a flowchart with a bracket. ( False )

a-A __________ is a graphical representation of an algorithm.

Flowchart Program Symbol

b-A step-by-step procedure written in simple language that tells a computer how
to solve a problem is called ______________

Flowchart Program Algorithm

c-A _________ represents input or output of data in a flowchart.

Parallelogram Circle Rectangle

d-Decision making is represented by a______________ in a flowchart.

Rhombus Rectangle Parallelogram

e-In a flowchart, the rectangle symbol represents a _________________.

Input of data Decision making Processing of data

Question#03: Here is an algorithm for boarding bus. Arrange the steps of
algorithm in correct sequence.

 Start
 Pack your bag
 Leave the house
 Reach the bus stop
 Board the bus
 Stop
Unit#02

Topic: Hardware Basics

Notebook work

Question#01: Answer the following questions. ( Short Questions )

1-What is the function of a microprocessor?

Ans. It is commonly known as CPU, the brain of the computer. It is responsible for
carrying out all sorts of calculation and processing. It also controls the operations
of different parts of the computer.

2-What is the role of the ALU?

Ans. It stands for arithmetic and Logic Unit. It is responsible for performing all
computations needed through the processor. All kind of Arithmetic and Logic
Operations are carried out by ALU.

3-Why is RAM called volatile memory?

Ans. RAM is a temporary memory and the information stored no it is only

available as long as the computer remains turned on. That is why RAM is called
volatile memory.

4-What is the purpose of BIOS?

Ans. BIOS is stored on the ROM chip. It helps to set up the computer and boot the
operating system. In addition, ROMs are widely used in calculations, laser printers
etc.

5-How does a barcode reader works?

Ans. A barcode reader uses a lens, light source and photo conductor to convert
optical signals into electrical signals. The reflected light is measured and the code
is interrupted into numbers and letters which are then passed onto a computer.
Question#02: Give detailed answers of the following. (LONG QUESTION )
1-What are expansion cards? Where do they fit in?

Ans. An expansion card is an electronic circuit board that expands a computers

ability to perform additional functions, which are not offered by the mother
board. Sound cards , video cards , network cards , modems etc are all examples of
expansion cards. All kinds of graphics and visual information can be seen on
monitor with the help of a video or graphic cards.

Expansion cards are inserted into slots on the mother board called expansion
slots. A common motherboard can fit around seven expansion cards in its slots.

2-What is the purpose of using finger print scanners in a organization.

Ans. A finger print scanner is an electronic device that can scan and store finger
prints. Every individual has a unique set of finger prints. That is why finger prints
scanners are used for identification purposes. In offices and large organizations ,
these scanners are actively used for taking attendances and for accessing
classified information. When a finger is placed on the scanner it takes the image of
the fingerprint and tries to find a suitable match within the stored data. If it finds
match, the user is granted access to the desired information.

Question#03: Fill in the blanks.

1. The most important part of computer is system unit.

2. The motherboard is the backbone of computer system.
3. The CPU is the brain of the computer.
4. A processor can be divided into three main components.
5. Registers are very small memory locations inside the microprocessor.

Question#04: State the following statements as true or false.

1. All types of Arithmetic and Logic operations are performed by Control Unit.
( False )
2. RAM is a temporary memory. ( True )
3. A interface card is a type of expansion card. ( True )
