Case Study -1. Read the source given below and answer the questions that follow.
What we know today as Germany, Italy and Switzerland were divided into kingdoms, Duchies and Cantons
whose ruler had their ob autonomous territories. Eastern and Central Europe were under autocratic monarchies
within the territories of which lived diverse peoples. They did not see themselves as sharing a collective identity
or a common culture. Often, they even spoke different languages and belonged to different ethnic groups. The
Habsburg Empire that ruled over Austria-Hungary, for example, was a patchwork of many different regions
and.
peoples. It included the Alpine regions-the Tyrol, Austria and the Sudetenland as well as Bohemia, where the
aristocracy was predominantly German speaking. It also included the Italian speaking provinces of Lombardy
and Venetia. In Hungary, half of the population spoke Magyar while the other half spoke a variety of dialects.
In Galicia, the aristocracy spoke Polish. Besides these three dominant groups, there also lived within the
boundaries of the empire, a mass of subject peasant peoples Bohemians and Slovaks to the North, Slovenes in
Carniola, Croasts to the South and Roumans to the East in Transylvania. Such differences did not easily
promote a sense of political unity. The only tie binding these diverse groups together was a common allegiance
to the emperor.

Case Study -2 Read the given extract and answer the following questions.
Large MNCs in developed countries place orders for production with small producers. Garments, footwear,
sports items are examples of industries where production is carried out by a large number of small producers
around the world. The products are supplied to the MNCs, which then sell these under their own brand names
to the customers. These large MNCs have tremendous power to determine price, quality, delivery, and labour
conditions for these distant producers. Thus, we see that there are a variety of ways in which the MNCs are
spreading their production and interacting with local producers in various countries across the globe. By setting
up partnerships with local companies, by using the local companies for supplies, by closely competing with the
local companies or buying them up, MNCs are exerting a strong influence on production at these distant
locations. As a result, production in these widely dispersed locations is getting interlinked.
(i) What do you understand by small producers? (1)
(ii) Why do large MNCs are invited by the government into a country? (2)
(iii) List two ways in which MNCs interlink production. (1)
Case Study- 3 Read the source given below and answer the questions that follow.
Mahatma Gandhi found in salt a powerful symbol that could unite the nation. On 31st January, 1930, he sent a
letter to Viceroy Irwin stating eleven demands. Some of these were of general interest; others were specific
demands of different classes, from industrialists to peasants. The idea was to make the demands wide-ranging,
so that all classes within Indian society could identify with them and everyone could be brought together in a
united campaign. The most stirring of all was the demand to abolish the salt tax. Salt was something consumed
by the rich and the poor alike, and it was one of the most essential items of food. The tax on salt and the
government monopoly over its production, Mahatma Gandhi declared, revealed the most oppressive face of
British rule. Mahatma Gandhi's letter was, in a way, an ultimatum. If the demands were not fulfilled by 11st
March, the letter stated, the Congress v ould launch a Disobedience campaign. Irwin Civil was unwilling to
negotiate. So, Mahatma Gandhi started his famous Salt March accompanied by 78 of his trusted volunteers. The
march was over 240 miles, from Gandhiji's ashram in Sabarmati to the Gujarati coastal town of Dandi.
