Objectives
The Instructor will:
1.Provide an insight on the fundamental concepts of biomaterials engineering.
2. Give an overview of techniques for characterizations of different types of biomaterials for various
applications.

Learning Outcomes
The students will have the ability to:
1. Analyze the suitability of the material to be used as a biomaterial.
2. Compare the performance of different biomaterials.
3. Design a strategy for modification of biomaterials for a specific application.

Fundamental of Biomaterials [14 Lectures]: Introduction to biomaterials (2 lectures), types of
biomaterials (1 lectures), processing of biomaterials (4 lectures), surface properties and surface
modification of biomaterials (3 lectures), physicochemical characterization of biomaterials (4
lectures). (offered by MM department)

Biological properties of biomaterials [14 Lectures]: Concepts of biocompatibility, immune-


compatibility, hemocompatibility and biodegradability (5 lectures), Bioconjugations,
Biomineralization (4 lectures), Biological characterization of biomaterials (5 lectures) (offered by
BSBE)

Applications of Biomaterials [14 Lectures]: Biomimetic and stealth biomaterials (3 lectures), types
and applications of implants (4 lectures), biomaterials for drug delivery systems (3 lectures),
biomaterials for tissue engineering (3 lectures), regulatory affairs (1 lecture) (offered by BSBE)
