Brief History of Philippine Folk Dancing

Every country cherishes a cultural heritage that is embedded in the dances of

its people. In the Philippines, the folk dances of our people have been patiently

dancing is a true reflection of daily life in past centuries while enchanting modern
audiences at the same time.

Folkloric dance is the history of the people in movement. In some cultures,

pale fragments of it survive centuries of invasions and diasporas. In the Philippines,
folk dance is a strong and enduring indigenous expression.

Filipino folk dance history is not the history of a single national dance of one or two
regions. Dances evolved from different regions which are distinct from one another
as they are affected by the religion and culture. In the Philippines, dance is as
diverse as the culture intermingling in the archipelago. It encompasses all the dance
forms that have been used by the Filipinos through the centuries to express
themselves. This dazzling diversity of dances in different forms and dynamics grew
out of the times, situations, and experiences of the people and the exposure to the
varied cultures and traditions introduced by the waves of colonial rule that have
reached the Philippine shores.

No more should dance remain in the domain of women alone;

everyone, young and old, girls and boys, alike,
should learn to dance for fun and happy expression.
