Teaching Instruction (Reading Comprehension)

Pre-Activities

1. Please check the students’ readiness (dictionary must be brought during the
reading class)
2. Please check the students’ knowledge regarding the title of the story.

Main Activities:

Step 1 (Vocabulary Building):

1. Guide the students to find difficult words in the reading passages.


2. Invite the students to write the difficult words on board.
3. After finish writing, invite the students to translate each word on board.

Step 2 (Pronunciation Practice):

1. Please ask the students to focus on their papers.


2. Invite the students to listen you reading the passages.
3. Invite the students to read the passages together step by step.
4. Invite one by one to read the passage (all students must be listened at least
reading one sentence)

Step 3 (Comprehension Practice):

1. Check the students understanding of each sentence (you may ask them to
translate each sentence to Bahasa Indonesia).
2. Ask them orally (WH Questions) to make sure their understandings.
3. Guide the students to find other moral values of the story.

Evaluation (Exercise) might be in the 3 rd hour.


DAY 1

The Lion and the Rabbit

Once, there was a Lion in the jungle who used to

kill 2-3 animals daily for his meal. All animals went

to tell him that one of them will come to him for

his meal. So, the Lion agreed and this is going for
many days.

One day, it was Rabbit’s turn. When he was on

his way, he saw a well. Now he plans to kill the


lion and saves himself. He went to the lion and
told him that there was another lion who

claimed to be more powerful than him. The lion

was very angry.

Then the lion asked the rabbit to take him to that


lion. The rabbit took him to the well and said “he

lives here.”

When the lion looked in the well, he saw his own

reflection. He thought that it was another lion. Then he jumped into the well
and died.

*Moral: Wisdom wins strength. *

DAY 2

The Hunter and the Pigeons

One day a hunter set a net to catch birds and

placed grains and rice over the net. After some

time, a flock of pigeons came by and started

eating grains and got caught in the net.

After some time, they started losing hope.

Then their leader asked them to fly together

up in the sky. They did as they were told and


carried the net away.

The hunter ran after them but they flew

away to their friend’s mouse hole, then the

mouse cut the net and freed the pigeons.

*Moral: Unity is a power.*

Two friends and the Bear

Once there were two friends who were

crossing the jungle. After some time, they saw

a bear coming towards them.

Then, one of the friends quickly climbed the


nearby tree and the other one did not know

how to climb the tree. So, he laid down on

the ground holding his breath.

The bear reached near him and sniffed him


in the ear. After some time, bear left the

place, thinking the man was dead.

Now the other friend climbed down and

asked his friend what the bear said to him in


his ear. He replied,” to be safe from the fake friends.”

*Moral: Beware of fake friends. *

DAY 4

The Ant and The Grasshopper Story


Once on a bright summer’s sunny day, a
Grasshopper was singing along. Then, he

saw an Ant working hard to collect food.

The grasshopper said to the ant,

“Why do you work so hard in summers?


Summers are for fun, relaxation and

enjoyment. Come let us sing and enjoy the moment.”

But Ant said, “I am collecting food for the winters and I recommend you to do the

same.”

Grasshopper said, “We have got plenty of food at present. Why bother about winter
now?”.

The Ant ignored him and went on its way.

When the winter came grasshopper had no food

to eat. He saw that Ant and begged for food,


but she said, “When I worked hard, you enjoyed

your time. You didn’t think of this.” Then

grasshopper learned his lesson the hard way.

Moral: Work hard so you can get the benefits tomorrow.

DAY 5

The Boy Who Cried Wolf

Once upon a time, there was a boy who had a

duty to look after a flock of sheep. He used to lie

to everyone for fun.

One day he started shouting, “Wolf, Wolf, Wolf,”

The villager ran towards as they heard him.

They hurried to help him. But when the villagers reached him, he was laughing on
them as there was no wolf.

He was lying and making a fool out of the villagers. This continued for some days.

Finally, one day, a wolf really came. The wolf came near

him and he shouted again.

This time, nobody came to help him. So, the boy was
killed by the wolf.

There was no one to blame but him.

Moral: Never lie, no matter how bad the situation is.

DAY 6

The Ugly Duckling

A long time ago, a farmer had a duck, which laid 4

eggs. After a few days, all eggs hatched.

Three ducklings looked like their mom and the


fourth one looked different. It was big and grey.

All other ducklings started making fun of him, as

they started calling him ugly.

Then he ran away from his mother and siblings.


However, the other ducks did the same to him. Day by

day, the sad duckling grew older and bigger with a

beautiful fur without he realized it.

After some days, he ran away to a river nearby. There,

he saw a beautiful white swan. After seeing their

beauty, he wanted to drown in the river. But when he

looked at his reflection in the river, he realized he was not an ugly duckling anymore.
He turned into a beautiful Swan!

Moral: You are beautiful just the way you are.

DAY 7

The Hare and The Tortoise


One day a Hare was boasting about how

fast he could run. He was laughing on the

turtle for being so slow.

After seeing the overconfidence Hare, the

turtle challenged him to a race. Hare

(Rabbit) laughed at turtle’s challenge and

he accepted the challenge.

As the race started, the hare ran very fast and

went far ahead from the turtle and got tired.

He thought there was plenty of time to relax

as the turtle was very far behind. Soon he fell


asleep thinking he would win the race easily.

Meanwhile, the turtle continued to walk

slowly, until he reached the finish line. The overslept hare saw the turtle on the other

side of the finish line. He was surprised that the turtle had beaten him in the race.

Moral: Slow and steady wins the race.

DAY 8
The Golden Touch
There once was a king named Midas who did a good deed

for a satyr — a spirit of nature. Dionysus - the god of wine-


then granted him a wish.

For his wish, Midas asked that whatever he touched would

turn to gold. Despite Dionysus’ efforts to prevent it, Midas


pleaded that this was a fantastic wish, so it was bestowed.

Excited about his newly-earned powers, Midas started


touching all kinds of things, turning each item into pure

gold.

But soon, Midas became hungry. As he picked up a piece

of food, he found he couldn’t eat it. It had turned to gold


in his hand. Hungry Midas groaned, “I’ll starve! Perhaps this

was not such an excellent wish after all!”

Seeing his dismay, Midas’ beloved daughter threw her arms


around him to comfort him, and she, too, turned to gold. “The
golden touch is no blessing,” Midas cried.

The Moral: Greed will always lead to downfall.

DAY 9
The Fox and the Grape

One day, a fox became very hungry. He went out to

search for some food. He searched high and low but


couldn’t find anything to eat.

Finally, as his stomach rumbled, he stumbled upon a

farmer’s wall. At the top of the wall, he saw the


biggest, juiciest grapes he’d ever seen. They were a

rich purple, telling the fox they were ready to be


eaten.

To reach the grapes, the fox had to jump high

in the air. As he jumped, he opened his mouth

to catch the grapes, but he missed. The fox


tried again but missed once more.

He tried a few more times but kept failing.


Finally, the fox decided to give up and go
home. While he walked away, he muttered, “I’m sure the grapes were sour anyway.”

The Moral: Never despise what we can’t have; nothing comes easy.

DAY 10

A Glass of Milk
There once was a poor boy who spent his days going door

to door selling newspapers to pay for school. One day, as

he walked his route, he started feeling low and weak. The

poor boy was starving, so he began to ask for


nourishment at each home he stopped by.

The poor boy was denied every time until he

reached the door of a young girl. He asked


for a glass of water to the girl. Seeing his

poor state, the girl returned with a glass of

milk. The boy asked how much he owed her


for the milk, but she refused payment.

Years later, the girl, who was now a grown woman, fell sick. She went from doctor to
doctor, but no one could cure her. Finally, she went to the best doctor in town.

The doctor spent months treating her until she was

finally cured. Despite her happiness, she was afraid


she couldn’t afford to pay the bill. But, when the

hospital handed her the bill, it read, “Paid in full, with a


glass of milk.”

The Moral: No good deed goes unrewarded.

DAY 11

CONTROLLING ANGER
Once, there was a young boy. This boy had a problem in
controlling his anger. When he got angry, he would say the first
thing that came to his mind, even if it affected people.

One day, his father gifted him a hammer and a bundle of nails. Then his father
said, “Whenever you get mad, hammer a nail into the backyard fence.”

The boy used up half of his nails in the first few days.
Over the following weeks, he used up fewer nails until his
temper was under control. The father then asked the
young boy to remove a nail for each day he didn’t lose
his temper.

On the day when the boy had removed his last


nail, his father told him, “You have done good,
boy. But can you see the holes in the wall? The
fence is never going to be the same. Likewise,
when you say mean things in anger, you’ll leave a
scar to someone’s heart.”

The Moral: Anger is like a knife — one of the most dangerous weapons. When you

use it, the wounds will heal, but the scars remain.
