Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8th, 2024

Approximate Times on Long Island:

Begins 2:12pm; Max – 3:26pm; Ends – 4:37pm
The Moon orbits the Earth once every month, and occasionally it passes directly between the Sun and Earth.
When this is the case, for people living in certain locations, the Sun’s light is completely blocked by the moon –
a total solar eclipse.

What is a Solar Eclipse?

During a solar eclipse, the Moon’s shadow falls onto
Earth. Notice, in the diagram that the shadow does
not fall across the entire Earth, but only a specific
location. Each time there is a total eclipse, about
once every 18 months, the location (path of totality)
changes, because the Earth-Moon-Sun alignment
changes a bit.

In the example above, if you are located where the dark shadow of the Moon (black triangle) touches the
Earth, you would see a total solar eclipse. However, if you are located where the gray area touches the Earth,
the Sun will only be partially covered. In this case, you will see a partial solar eclipse.

Partial eclipses are cool, but total eclipses are AWESOME!!

So, what will we see here in Half Hollow Hills?

We will not be able to see a total eclipse on Long Island. Instead, the Sun will be about 90% eclipsed by the Moon,
very much like the image in the above diagram (partial eclipse). If you want to see a total eclipse, the closest place
you would have to travel to is upstate New York. The above left diagram shows the ”path of totality”. If you are
located anywhere within the black lines you will see totality. The best place to go is on or near the white line. It
passes right through Buffalo, New York. That is where totality lasts the longest, about 3 minutes and 45 seconds.

Important Safety Information

YOU SHOULD NEVER LOOK AT THE ECLIPSE DIRECTLY, unless you have special eclipse safety glasses. Looking at the
Sun can cause eye damage, even during an eclipse. So you MUST wear eclipse safety glasses during the eclipse if
you are going to look at it.
